As a long-time fan of classic 2D platformers, I couldn’t be more excited for the upcoming release of Tomba: Special Edition! I remember playing the original game back in the late ’90s on my trusty PlayStation 1, and the memories of exploring Tomba’s whimsical world and battling those mischievous Evil Pigs still bring a smile to my face.

Before the August 1 launch of Tomba: Special Edition, the list of achievements or trophies for the PS4 and PS5 versions was made public. To unlock all 32 of these trophies, players must finish every in-game task and reach the maximum potential for Tomba’s character stats. This title, created by Limited Run Games and Whoopee Camp, is being released as a special edition.

I’ve always been a big fan of the quirky adventure game “Tomba,” which first graced our screens back in 1997. Developed by Tokuro Fujiwara and his studio, Whoopee Camp, for the PlayStation 1, it follows my beloved protagonist Tomba, a pink-haired hero on a mission to retrieve his grandfather’s stolen golden bracelet from a band of nefarious Evil Pigs. The porky baddies and their minions wreaked havoc in Tomba’s world using magic, leaving its inhabitants in despair.

For those wanting to reminisce about one of PS1’s finest 2D platformers and earn all its trophies, they now have a straightforward route. As per PSNProfiles, the re-release of Tomba: Special Edition on PS4 and PS5 comes with 32 trophies in total. To secure the Platinum Trophy, players must first obtain the remaining 31. The trophy categories consist of four gold, 14 silver, and 13 bronze trophies. All bronze trophies can be earned by completing the main storyline. Six silvers and two golds are awarded upon defeating all Evil Pig bosses. Lastly, a gold trophy is bestowed upon players who successfully complete all in-game events numbering 130. Therefore, a comprehensive playthrough is necessary to claim the coveted Platinum Trophy for Tomba: Special Edition.

The “Special Edition” of Tomba: brought to you by Limited Run Games and powered by the Carbon Engine, comes with enhanced features. You’ll enjoy an upgraded game experience along with a revitalized soundtrack, skillfully composed by Harumi Fujita for the original version. But that’s not all! Another exciting project is underway: “Tomba 2” will receive a Carbon Engine remaster in the year 2025. Though specifics are still scarce.

Limited Run Games is bringing back the classic game “Tomba: Special Edition” and, alongside the revival of other retro titles such as “Bubsy“, aims to satisfy gamers’ cravings for nostalgia. We’ll have to wait and see what else Limited Run Games and Whoopee Camp announce regarding the “Tomba” series in due time.
