Tony Hawk says “There Will Be a Future” for Pro Skater Franchise

“As a gamer who grew up with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, I can’t help but feel like a kid on Christmas Eve all over again! The news of a future for THPS is music to my ears and a throwback to those exhilarating days of the early 2000s.

Today marks the 25th anniversary since the initial release of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, a milestone that brings back fond memories! And to all my devoted fans, I have some sentimental thoughts to share…

This is a modest, as accurate as I can make it, glimmer of optimism for those worried about Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater’s future. It’s a substantial handhold they can cling to.

Thanks to Activision, Neversoft (RIP) and all of you that played THPS in those formative years. I’m not supposed to tease anything else about the future of the series; but there will be a future.

Plenty Of Games And A Celebrated Remake Have Kept Fans Playing

In terms of its franchise, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater has seen numerous titles over the years, yet there’s been a significant gap between releases more recently. What’s more, the newer games don’t seem to hold the same weight or impact as those produced during the early 2000s.

The latest game, a reimagining of the original two Skater titles, landed on our list of the best remakes ever – however, it’s important to note that a remake isn’t exactly the same as a brand-new title. Rumor has it that another remake of the third and fourth games was planned, but unfortunately, it didn’t move forward.

The remake you’re referring to is four years old now. Prior to that, a free mobile game titled Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater was launched in the year 2018. It’s interesting to note that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 came out nine years ago, making it thirteen years since the release of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4. Doesn’t it make you feel a bit nostalgic?

There Will Be a Future For Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater isn’t alone in having a lingering sense of ambiguity, and it’s not the first series to receive some positive news this week either.

In terms of some popular games such as Call of Duty, prolonged dry spells like the current one pose minimal threats. It’s more a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ we will see future installments. As for other games, sequels may not be necessary due to the satisfaction derived from standalone experiences that require no expansion or continuation. Everyone has their preferred single-game adventures.

Afterward, there are titles often referred to as “limbo” – outstanding games that indeed warrant further development. However, despite their potential, they unfortunately do not receive additional content. Occasionally, we catch brief flashes or hints of continued progress.

At times, independent developers unite with fans in a shared call for action. On other occasions, fans develop their own unique experiences.

Occasionally, we may find ourselves in a position where we secure Tony Hawk, implying that there’s a definite acquisition or collaboration on the horizon, albeit with some subtle legal constraints suggesting secretive maneuverings.

Sometimes it’s enough.
