Summary
- Ahodere characters are caring but clueless in romantic situations, causing frustration for love interests.
- Characters like Ichika Orimura, Yaguchi Haruo, and Bell Cranel exhibit ahodere tendencies in anime.
- Ahodere behaviors lead to comedic effects and misunderstandings in romance plots, making them oblivious.
A “tsundere” is a common character type in anime, often portraying individuals who are naive or unaware when it comes to romantic situations. It’s essential to clarify that being a tsundere doesn’t automatically make the character foolish; instead, they may be oblivious to specific romantic interactions.
Ahodere characters are often compassionate and considerate individuals, yet they can experience confusion and misunderstanding, particularly within romantic relationships involving one or more people. This miscommunication sometimes causes discontent in their love interest. In anime, these types of characters range from the more comical ones to those who usually perform well but falter when love is involved.
10. Ichika Orimura (Infinite Stratos)
He Almost Feels Like A Parody
Ichikawa Orimura serves as the main protagonist in Infinite Stratos, and he’s the lone male character capable of operating the mechanical suits within the storyline. Being a harem-style anime, Ichika finds himself surrounded by an array of attractive females who express affection towards him, but remains blissfully unaware.
It’s been suggested that he may be intentionally feigning ignorance, but based on the narrative we’ve seen thus far, it appears Ichika’s clumsiness is employed for humorous purposes, as he stumbles along in the storyline.
9. Yaguchi Haruo (Hi-Score Girl)
He Has Eyes For Only One Girl
In the anime “Hi-Score Girl“, Yaguchi Haruo stands out as the central character, renowned primarily for his gaming prowess. He’s open about his lack of talent in academic or athletic pursuits. However, when it comes to video games, particularly fighting games, he excels beyond most others.
From my vantage point, it appears that Haruo shares affection for the leading lady, Akira. Consequently, this leaves Kohaku feeling rather neglected. Kohaku expresses her feelings for Haruo, yet he remains oblivious, at times even exhibiting unkind behavior towards her.
8. Bell Cranel (Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon)
Bell Is Cute, But Clueless
Bell Cranel, the protagonist of Danmachi, is originally a white-haired adventurer driven by the desire to meet women. However, his perspective shifts following an encounter with Ais Wallenstein, who rescues him from imminent peril. In time, he develops deep feelings for her.
Bell exhibits a gentle nature and is sincere, reliable, and honest. His affectionate disposition becomes particularly evident in his interactions with his goddess Hestia, who seems fond of him. However, surprisingly, Bell often fails to recognize this mutual attraction despite having the ability to pursue or reject other women according to his feelings.
7. Son Goku (Dragon Ball)
The Grandfather Of The Ahodere
As a keen observer, I can’t help but acknowledge the enduring impact of “Dragon Ball.” This timeless anime has left an indelible mark on countless viewers for numerous reasons, serving as a foundational blueprint for many tropes that are now synonymous with the shonen genre. The series’ protagonist, Son Goku, is a trailblazer in more ways than one. His distinctive character traits, particularly his affectionate nature towards Chi Chi, have set a precedent that continues to influence other shonen protagonists.
In other words, Son Goku demonstrates exceptional skills and is a formidable warrior, yet he struggles to comprehend Chi Chi’s emotions. Thankfully, they do end up getting married and having children, which brings a joyful conclusion to their story.
6. Asta (Black Clover)
He And Yami Are Clueless
In a more casual and friendly tone: Asta, from the Black Clover series, is the charmingly chatty character everyone loves. Unlike others in his world who can use magic naturally, Asta lacks this ability but makes up for it with incredible physical strength, placing him among the most powerful members of the Black Bull squad.
Asta demonstrates impressive combat skills, yet he’s oblivious to Noelle’s feelings towards him. While he cares for her deeply in a friendly way, it appears their relationship remains unrequited. Noelle’s tsundere personality complicates the situation even further. Similarly, Asta is clueless about Yami’s captain’s feelings for Charlotte Roselei, and his aho-dere behavior mirrors this lack of awareness in their interactions as well.
5. Tohru Honda (Fruits Basket)
She Is Kind To A Fault
As a passionate anime fan, I can’t help but sing praises for Tohru Honda, one of the most beloved characters in the realm of anime. Her heart overflowing with kindness, she has been an indispensable ally to the Soma family and truly embodied the soul of Fruits Basket. It’s her selfless nature that has earned her a legion of admirers, and even her closest friends can’t help but watch over her protectively.
When it comes to romantic situations, she appears utterly puzzled, often finding herself at a loss for words when other characters express interest, particularly Yuki Soma. Tohru doesn’t see herself as an object of affection and behaves accordingly. However, by the end of the series, she ends up with Kyo.
4. Umetarou Nozaki (Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun)
His Cluelessness Is The Show’s Gimmick
In a nutshell, Nozaki is a well-known manga artist who catches the eye of lively and untroubled Chiyo Sakura. However, when she gathers the nerve to express her feelings towards him, he gets the wrong idea and instead enlists her as his assistant.
At the heart of the humor in Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun lies Nozaki’s struggle to comprehend Sakura’s emotions, often resulting in a series of amusing predicaments. This anime is a playful spoof of romance stories, and as such, the romantic plotline remains unresolved throughout the show.
3. Anya Forger (Spy X Family)
Probably Too Young For Love Anyway
Anya Forger is the lovable character who needs to be safeguarded at any expense in the series Spy X Family. With her unique ability to read minds, Anya aims to earn the rare Stella Stars to help Loid accomplish his tasks effectively.
In the midst of all this, I’ve come to notice that everyone, even Damian Desmond, son of Loid’s target, holds Anya in high regard. While he harbors feelings for her, she remains oblivious, often serving as a source of humor due to her misinterpretations of his intentions. On some level, Anya does care for Damian, but at her age, such complex emotions may be beyond her grasp. It seems that being unaware (ahodere) is the best state for her in this situation.
2. Katarina Claes (My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!)
She Is Called Bakarina For A Reason
As a child, I stumbled and jolted my head, and in an instant, memories flooded back of when I was a humble Japanese student with an affinity for villainess games. From that moment on, I embarked on a mission to steer clear of the disastrous ‘bad ending’ that has haunted these captivating stories I adore so much.
Katarina astonishes people who thought they had her figured out due to her extraordinary kindness and empathy. This trait quickly attracts a group of admirers, some of whom have romantic feelings, yet Katarina’s obliviousness prevents her from recognizing or returning these affections. This situation often results in humor, but it can also be incredibly frustrating for those who harbor these feelings.
1. Monkey D. Luffy (One Piece)
Boa Hancock Has Been Through A Lot
The leader of the Straw Hat pirates, Luffy, is a strong character who’s made it to one of the top roles in the One Piece world. Despite being somewhat dimwitted, he has a big heart and takes great care of his fellow crew members.
In matters of affection, Luffy tends to be oblivious. This fact has caused Boa Hancock, a former warlord and captain of the Kuja Pirates, more heartache than most. Having fallen for Luffy while he was incarcerated on her island, she’s made every effort to make him aware of her feelings. Regrettably, Luffy often fails to grasp these signs, usually resulting in comedic misunderstandings rather than reciprocation.
