Sukuna, the villain from Jujutsu Kaisen, is notorious for being incredibly brutal. He’s responsible for some truly awful acts, especially during the Shibuya arc. He doesn’t just make Yuji Itadori do terrible things; he also forces Yuji to deal with the guilt and consequences of those actions, deeply traumatizing him.
Okay, so everyone talks about Sukuna being the ultimate evil, and he is pretty terrifying! But honestly, I think there are other anime villains who are just more compelling and, dare I say, better. That got me thinking, so I’ve put together a list of antagonists who, in my opinion, really stand out as top-tier villains – even surpassing Sukuna!
This post contains SPOILERS for several anime series.
Sosuke Aizen
- Anime: Bleach
Sosuke Aizen is a remarkably intelligent anime villain, and his unpredictability is what makes him so threatening. Unlike villains like Sukuna, who react on impulse without a grand strategy, Aizen carefully plans ahead. He’s a master manipulator, skillfully gaining people’s trust before revealing his true, dangerous nature.
Sukuna thrives on disorder and acts impulsively, while Aizen carefully plans his moves – you could think of him as someone who designs a strategy before striking. Aizen differs from Sukuna by being a villain who brings real emotional weight to the narrative, making the story much more powerful.
Johan Liebert
- Anime: Monster
Johan Liebert, from the anime Monster, is considered one of the most frightening villains in anime by many fans. While he’s not simply evil, and doesn’t inspire fear through physical power, he’s incredibly dangerous – capable of destroying someone without even trying. He embodies the darkness and flaws within the human psyche. Sukuna is feared for his strength, but Johan is terrifying because he can manipulate people into doing his bidding.

High Score: 0 —
Johan doesn’t rely on spectacular battles to be seen as a truly terrifying villain; his sheer unpredictability is enough. Unlike Sukuna, who is simply a force of nature, Johan’s past reveals the complex reasons behind his descent into irredeemable evil.
Madara Uchiha
- Anime: Naruto
Madara Uchiha didn’t start out as a villain; his experiences as a child deeply influenced his beliefs. Witnessing the horrors of war and the loss of young lives caused him to lose hope in people. He came to believe that true peace was impossible, leading him to devise the Infinite Tsukuyomi – a plan to end suffering by creating a dreamlike world. Although his motivations were understandable, his methods were extreme, and he chose a frightening path in his attempt to build a perfect world.
Both Sukuna and Madara Uchiha inspire a sense of hopelessness in their enemies. However, Madara is the more compelling character. His motivations and history greatly enrich the story of Naruto in a way that Jujutsu Kaisen doesn’t quite achieve.
Light Yagami
- Anime: Death Note
Light Yagami is a remarkably cunning villain, and while he wouldn’t win in a direct physical fight against someone like Sukuna from Jujutsu Kaisen, he’s more than capable of outsmarting him. Light doesn’t confront his enemies head-on; instead, he operates from the shadows, using manipulation and careful planning to achieve his goals. He relies entirely on his intelligence to stay one step ahead. For example, he cleverly tricked Raye Penber into revealing the identities of FBI agents, allowing Light to eliminate them all at once, and then he ultimately removed Penber himself using the Death Note.
Light Yagami is such a captivating character because you’re constantly left wondering what he’ll do next. It’s especially compelling to watch characters who overcome powerful foes not with brute force, but with intelligence and strategy.
Father
- Anime: Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
Father isn’t a standard villain. He began as an artificial lifeform, created in a lab, and gradually developed free will and intelligence. Unlike villains who act on impulse, Father carefully plans his moves. While some antagonists simply want power, Father’s goal is far grander: to break all boundaries and control all of reality.
My father despises all feelings – love, fear, anger, even hate – and actively avoids experiencing them. He strives for an impossible ideal of perfection, maintaining a calm and patient demeanor while subtly manipulating events from the shadows.
Donquixote Doflamingo
- Anime: One Piece
It’s easy to see why people compare Sukuna and Doflamingo – they were both incredibly cruel. Sukuna simply enjoyed causing pain and disregarded anyone he considered weak, and Doflamingo consistently displayed the same behavior. However, Doflamingo is arguably a slightly more complex villain because his actions stemmed from a specific, understandable motivation.
Fans of One Piece are familiar with Doflamingo’s difficult childhood, marked by abuse, loss, and hardship after his father chose a life of poverty. This led Doflamingo to believe that weakness has no place in the world. As a result, he relentlessly pursued strength, disregarding anyone who stood in his way.
Meruem
- Anime: Hunter x Hunter
Meruem is a standout anime villain because of his complex character and development. Unlike many villains in action-packed anime, he changes significantly throughout the story. At first, he’s a cold and powerful enemy who sees humans as weak. But after meeting Komugi, he begins to grow as a person, developing compassion and understanding.
Sukuna definitely gets more attention for his powerful displays and exciting scenes, but Meruem’s story and the way it resonates with viewers is ultimately more compelling.
Eren Yeager
- Anime: Attack on Titan
Eren Yeager begins as the hero of the popular series Attack on Titan, but he slowly changes into a villain. However, he’s not a simple villain – Eren becomes one of the most complex antagonists ever seen in anime. He wasn’t inherently evil, either at the start or the finish; he was a young person overwhelmed by the immense power of the Founding Titan.
Sukuna always craved destruction, so his motives were straightforward. Eren, from Attack on Titan, is different – he didn’t start as a villain. In fact, Eren initially fought as a hero, simply wanting freedom. But the immense pain and trauma he experienced in a world filled with Titans ultimately changed him, leading him down a much darker path.
Frieza
- Anime: Dragon Ball Z
It’s true that Frieza has become more of a comedic character in Dragon Ball Super, particularly in the Broly movie. But if you compare him to his original appearance in Dragon Ball Z, he was a far more compelling and powerful villain than Sukuna. While both villains lack sympathetic backstories, Frieza stands out due to his sheer strength and the impact he had on the story.
While Sukuna could level a city, Frieza’s power is on a much larger scale – he’s destroyed entire planets. He famously obliterated Planet Vegeta, the original home of the Saiyans. Frieza actually enjoyed causing destruction, and his sinister laugh is still iconic even for those unfamiliar with Dragon Ball Z.
Griffith
- Anime: Berserk
Griffith from Berserk is a truly terrifying villain – so much so that even Sukuna, a powerful and ruthless being, would likely find his actions excessive. While Sukuna has caused immense destruction and loss of life, Griffith’s evil goes further. He betrayed and sacrificed his own friends to gain power, and also committed horrific acts, including sexual assault.
Griffith consistently claimed Guts was his only real friend, but after becoming Femto, he betrayed that friendship in the most horrific way possible by harming Casca. Griffith truly embodies evil, and few villains are as despicable as he is.
