Summary
- Harem manga heroes can range from the confident fighter in “Aiki” to the reluctant protagonist in “To-Love-Ru.”
- Some series blend romance with action, like “Sekirei,” where humans empower alien partners in combat.
- “Negima!” features a Welsh wizard teaching magic and unlocking his class’s magical powers, offering an engaging twist on harem tropes.
Harem manga offers a chance for some readers to experience, albeit vicariously, diverse and alluring casts of characters, ranging from heads of host clubs to unique figures like oni-inspired alien princesses. However, not everyone desires to embody Rentaro from “The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You”. Instead, they aspire to resemble Charlie, the protagonist, from “Charlie’s Angels”.
Switching admirers by itself is impressive, but it’s an entirely different level when your admirers can defend you from harm. You might not expect the protagonist of a harem manga to need protection, but there are numerous stories where their devoted followers prove useful as a fighting force. These are some top-tier battle harem mangas you shouldn’t miss.
9. Aiki
Cocky Fighter Agrees to Defend Girls from Delinquents

- Creator: Isutoshi.
- 14 Volumes, 98 Chapters.
- Fan Translations only.
TVTropes portrays Aiki as a “lewd and wicked spin-off of Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple, with both series featuring substantial ecchi elements alongside martial arts. Unlike Kenichi, who was a bumbling character with potential for greatness, Aiki’s Joukyu is already the most powerful fighter, and he flaunts this fact. Not even his father dislocating and re-aligning his joints could instill humility in him, though it reduced his power to 70% of its original strength.
Despite reservations, the faculty at Juzenji High School rely on him as their last resort, asking him to mentor Kizuki, the granddaughter of the school board’s chairman, due to concerns about her safety among the school’s delinquents, such as Miu, her rival and cousin. With hesitation, Joukyu starts instructing them in self-defense techniques, including unsavory tactics, all while trying to regain his former strength.
8. To-Love-Ru
Boy’s Lack of Courage Lands Him in Trouble

- Creators: Saki Hasemi (story), Kentaro Yabuki (art).
- 18 Volumes, 162 Chapters.
- Available in English via Seven Seas Entertainment’s Ghost Ship imprint.
AIKI’s Joukyu can be a bit too assertive for some viewers. On the other hand, To-Love-Ru’s Rito is often seen as hesitant and timid by many. If he mustered up the courage to confess his feelings to Haruna, he might have avoided some trouble. However, instead of expressing his emotions, Rito found himself in the unusual situation of an alien princess falling into his bath. This princess turned out to be Lala Deviluke, who had escaped her home planet to avoid a forced marriage arranged by her father, King Gid, ruler of the Milky Way Galaxy.
She’s so vehemently opposed to the idea that she informs her father’s allies in Rito that she has moved on with someone else. However, he objects, yet his objections fall on deaf ears. Now, he must maintain harmony between Lala and her space emperor father, as well as avoid the wrath of her former suitors to ensure the planet’s safety. Fortunately, Lala possesses sufficient power to protect him, and she becomes the first of several formidable extraterrestrials who develop feelings for him, including Lala’s sisters Momo and Nana, along with other characters such as the assassin Golden Darkness.
7. Omamori Himari
Boy Learns of His Destiny and His Allergies from a Magic Catgirl

- Creator: Milan Matra.
- 12 Volumes, 75 Chapters.
- Available in English via Yen Press.
In Omamori Himari, we find Yuto, a typical teenager with an extraordinary background. Unlike Tsukune, he’s not just any ordinary guy; he hails from a lineage of demon slayers. However, the only thing he’s managed to eliminate so far is time. The truth about his past and future was unveiled by Himari, a cat demon, who pledged an oath to shield Yuto while she prepares him to fulfill his destiny as a slayer.
It might seem simpler in theory than in practice, given that he doesn’t possess any extraordinary abilities and is even allergic to cats. However, among the various supernatural suitors he encounters, she appears to be the least dangerous compared to Shizuku, the water spirit; Lizlet, a teacup turned maid from Scotland (yes, really); and Kuesu, his Slayer fiancée who he can’t recall agreeing to marry, despite her claims.
6. Sekirei
Guy With Confidence Issues Unlocks Alien Ladies’ Superpowers

- Creator: Sakurako Gokurakuin.
- 19 Volumes, 213 Chapters.
- Available in English via Yen Press’ Yen Press World imprint.
It’s challenging to label Sekirei as the best battle harem manga out there, but it certainly stands among the leaders. However, it offers a straightforward take on this subgenre, focusing on ordinary humans enhancing their powerful, beautiful alien companions through kisses, enabling them to engage in fierce battles against each other in a grand tournament.
As an ardent fan, I’d say: I find myself deeply drawn to the tale of Minato, a clever and kind-hearted fellow who struggles with self-confidence. However, the mysterious alien known as Sekirei, Musubi, perceives in him the ideal genetics for becoming her ‘ashikabi’—a special bond that allows him to unleash her full combat potential through affection. Over time, he finds himself attracting more Sekirei into his life, from the mischievous hacker Matsu to the aloof and blonde Tsukiumi. What makes this even more captivating is that Minato consistently goes above and beyond for them, which only serves to deepen their affection towards him further.
5. Rosario+Vampire
Human Student Is Protected by His Supernatural Harem

- Creator: Akihisa Ikeda.
- 10 Volumes, 40 Chapters.
- Available in English via Viz Media’s Shonen Jump Advanced imprint.
Rosario+Vampire serves as a compelling lesson about the importance of excelling academically. Though our protagonist Tsukune finds himself surrounded by enchanting monster girls, it’s essential to remember that he’s the lone human in a school specifically designed for monsters. Many students and staff at this institution would rather see humans as a meal instead of peers.
His fortune improved significantly when he became friends with Moka, a vampire girl who appreciated his companionship and his blood, especially when he assisted her in unveiling her complete power by taking off her choker. This connection paved the way for him to establish rapport with the succubus Kurumu, witches Yukari and Ruby, and even attracted Mizore as a follower. However, just because they’re attractive doesn’t mean they aren’t still supernatural beings.
4. Negima! Magister Negi Magi
Welsh Wizard Becomes the Key to Unlocking His Class’ Full Potential

- Creator: Ken Akamatsu.
- 38 Volumes, 355 Chapters.
- Available in English via Kodansha Comics USA.
A typical man finds himself in the company of exceptional women, which has been the staple of harem genre since its inception. However, if you prefer a male protagonist who doesn’t pale in comparison to plain white bread, the main character of Negima! Magister Negi Magi, a Welsh sorcerer named Negi, is on a quest to find his missing father, Nagi, while imparting the fundamentals of magic at a magical academy.
In the end, he finds himself instructing a class composed entirely of women. It’s here that he uncovers his unique ability to awaken their hidden magical abilities through pacts. Some of these talents lean more towards utility, such as Kazumi’s Oculus Corvinus, which functions like a powerful telescope. However, others, like Asuna’s Ensis Exorcizans, are distinctly offensive in nature. This ability allows her to transform a simple paper fan into either a harmless prop or a massive weapon.
3. Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Oki
Humble Teen Befriends Some of the Strongest Women in the Cosmos

- Creator: Hitoshi Okuda.
- 12 Volumes, 80 Chapters.
- Available in English via Viz Media.
The “ordinary man amidst beautiful women” trope remains challenging to surpass, given its success in popularizing subgenre titans. For instance, just like the anime “Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Oki“, where an unassuming teenager named Tenchi unexpectedly liberates the impulsive, omnipotent space pirate Ryoko. Initially hostile towards him, they eventually forge a connection.
As he progresses, his challenges become increasingly complex due to the encounters with formidable space women. From wise goddess-like beings (Washu) to eccentric space officers possessing control over causality (Mihoshi), these powerful females could easily manipulate him into unrecognizable shapes if he doesn’t manage to maintain their favor. This talent for keeping them content might suggest that Tenchi is not your average man, especially if he can prevent them from causing chaos.
2. Ranma ½
Sex-Switching Protagonist Charms Straights of All Stripes

- Creator: Rumiko Takahashi.
- 38 Volumes, 407 Chapters.
- Available in English via Viz Media.
In the realm of harem manga, it often appears that the works of Rumiko Takahashi hold a significant place. The series “Urusei Yatsura” might even be considered one of the earliest examples of battle harem manga, given that Lum is not your typical damsel-in-distress (she might as well be the source of distress). However, it lacks the emphasis on combat and fighting compared to her other creation, “Ranma ½”.
Ultimately, the question revolves around who Ranma from the fighting Tendo sisters would choose to marry in order to preserve their dojo, given their initial disinterest. However, things get more intricate due to his unique curse that causes him to change genders upon water contact. This quirk leads him to captivate both Shampoo, a Chinese Amazon, and Kodachi, a kung fu gymnast, as a man, while Tatewaki, the captain of the kendo team, falls for him when he transforms into a woman. With all these admirers battling each other and Ranma himself, one might wonder if he ever considered becoming celibate to avoid this chaotic situation.
1. Black Lagoon
Desk Worker Impresses Pirates and Gangsters

- Creator: Rei Hiroe.
- 13+ Volumes, 119+ Chapters.
- Available in English via Viz Media’s Viz Signature imprint.
In my perspective, “Black Lagoon” might not be your typical harem story, but it does incorporate certain elements reminiscent of the Battle Harem genre. This anime is more about the world of organized crime and piracy in Southeast Asia, where an unlucky salaryman, Rokuro ‘Rock’ Okajima, finds himself unwillingly recruited into the notorious mercenary group known as the Black Lagoon. Despite its primary focus on criminal underworld activities, it does follow some familiar tropes commonly seen in Battle Harem narratives.
Firstly, Rock has successfully maintained friendly relationships with the strong, female characters in the show. Eda openly admires him, while his bravery ignited a soft spot in the hard-nosed Hotel Moscow manager Balalaika. It’s significant that Revy hasn’t yet taken a shot at him, considering her propensity for violence. However, her growing jealousy over Eda and Yifei’s closeness with him suggests she may harbor deeper feelings than mere tolerance.
