Top 10 Best Real-Time Tactics (RTT) Games To Play In 2025

What Makes A Great Real-Time Tactics Game in 2025?

Recently, a reader asked me to create a list of the top 10 real-time tactics (RTT) games for 2025. It struck me that, even though I love this type of game, I hadn’t written about it before. So, I started by thinking about what exactly defines an RTT game and how it differs from a real-time strategy (RTS) game. The main difference, as I see it, is that RTT games focus almost entirely on controlling units in battle. They usually skip the base-building and resource gathering you find in RTS games. The best RTT games really shine when they emphasize skillful control of a small number of units, offering challenging tactical situations with plenty of options. That’s what I’ll be looking for when recommending the top games in 2025.

I’ve put together a list of 10 real-time tactics (RTT) games that I think are excellent and worth checking out, based on my experience with the genre. I’ve also chosen games that frequently go on sale on platforms like Steam, so you can use this as a guide for what to buy during the Steam Winter Sale in 2025.

10 – Partisans 1941

Partisans 1941 is an engaging real-time tactics game set during World War II on the Eastern Front. You take command of a small group of Soviet fighters who are conducting guerrilla warfare against the German army. The gameplay is similar to classic ‘Commandos’ games, emphasizing stealth, ambushes, and careful planning. It adds new features like a pause system, allowing you to coordinate the special abilities of your squad – each member has unique skills, from silent takedowns to long-distance shooting.

What makes Partisans 1941 unique is the base-building aspect between missions. Players need to gather resources, create useful items, and assign tasks to partisans who aren’t currently on missions. This is key to keeping your resistance group alive and prepared for battle, and it adds a thoughtful strategic element to the exciting action.

9 – Broken Arrow

Even though it had a rocky start, I still believe Broken Arrow is the best large-scale, modern military tactics game you can play in 2025. It has a fantastic campaign where you command both American and Russian forces in intense battles across the Baltic states. This campaign is also a great way to learn the game’s systems before trying multiplayer. Taking cues from games like Wargame and WARNO, Broken Arrow doesn’t involve building bases or collecting resources during battles. Instead, you focus on building and customizing a ‘Battlegroup’ – a deck of over 300 detailed land, air, and sea units, each with unique equipment and ammunition.

Broken Arrow focuses on realistic, combined-arms combat. Winning requires careful positioning of your units, using scouts to maintain visibility, and coordinating different types of weaponry – like tanks, helicopters, and jets. You’ll also need to strategically use limited reinforcements throughout each battle. Unlike similar games set during the Cold War, Broken Arrow features modern weapons with increased power and accuracy.

8 – Last Train Home

Last Train Home truly stands out with its incredibly unique and fascinating setting in the world of strategy games. You take command of the Czechoslovak Legion as they struggle to return home after World War I, traveling aboard an armored train through the chaos of the Russian Civil War. The game cleverly mixes large-scale strategic management – where you oversee your train, assign roles to your soldiers (like cooks and medics), and manage vital resources – with intense, squad-based tactical missions where you venture out to gather supplies and fight opposing forces. What makes it even more special is that it’s based on a true, little-known story, and players have clearly enjoyed it, giving it an impressive 87% rating on Steam.
