Introduction

Steam Next Fest is back, and this time it’s huge! There are almost 4,000 game demos to check out – seriously, that’s a lifetime of gaming! Knowing it’s impossible to play them all, I’ve put together a list of 10 strategy game demos I think you absolutely shouldn’t miss.

I’m excited about all the game demos available, and I enjoy trying out new titles to see which ones stand out. If you’d like to join me, here are 10 strategy games you should definitely check out during Steam Next Fest 2026.

Steam Next Fest 2026 is happening from February 23rd to March 2nd, so don’t miss out! You can find more lists here, and if you’re a fan of strategy and wargames, you’ll find reviews at this link.

10 – Ancient Wars: Sparta

A remastered version of the classic early 2000s real-time strategy game, Ancient Wars: Sparta, is now available as a demo. Ancient Wars: Sparta HD updates the twenty-year-old game with enhanced graphics, new maps, improved artificial intelligence, working multiplayer, and many other enhancements. It also brings back the popular feature of customizing your units. The demo itself is quite substantial, letting you play one mission from each of the game’s three campaigns.

9 – Kriegsspiel ~ 7 Years’ War

The creator of the wargame Kriegsspiel ~ 7 Years’ War contacted me after seeing my article about common historical inaccuracies in video games. They explained that their game avoids these pitfalls by realistically simulating the challenges of 18th-century warfare, where commanders depended on scouts and messengers for information and relied on that information to issue orders. If you’re interested in a unique wargame set in a historically underrepresented era, check out Kriegsspiel during the Steam Next Fest.

8 – 1492 Colonization of the New World

Let me lead Portugal, and I’m immediately hooked – that’s how I feel about 1492 – Colonization of the New World. This 4X strategy game from Salty Olives puts you in charge of one of eight European powers during the Age of Discovery. You’ll compete to colonize new lands across the Atlantic, build settlements, establish trade, and manage resources while interacting with the native populations. I especially love the game’s art style; it reminds me of playing classic strategy games like Civilization 2.
