Incorporating realistic methods for fast travel in an open-world game helps maintain the sense of immersion, as opposed to instantly teleporting to a destination after opening a map, which can disrupt the feeling of being in a living, breathing world. When developers use authentic means for speedy transportation, it’s easier for players to accept and appreciate the intricate worlds they’ve labored to create.
This list features some exceptional open-world games that eschew conventional fast travel options and instead offer players realistic ways to navigate. Some games may include cinematic scenes or complex puzzles, motivating players to take their time and delve deeper into the game world rather than rushing through it.
10. The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind
The Franchise Stepping Into Its Own
In the third installment of “The Elder Scrolls” series lies the game titled “Morrowind.” This captivating adventure unfolds in the region of Vvardenfell, where various gods and mythical races engage in a power struggle. When it comes to role-playing games (RPGs), “Morrowind” presents a more challenging entrance due to the absence of quest markers or stat regeneration. However, its rich lore and intricate world-building make it an exceptional choice for those willing to immerse themselves in its complexities.
Unlike subsequent TES games, Morrowind didn’t simplify fast travel, but instead offered unique and coherent alternatives for movement. Players can hitch a ride on silt striders and boats, employ teleportation spells, or seek help from Guild navigators. These methods each traverse different paths, so players must strategize to reach their destination efficiently.
9. Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood
Still A Fantastic Game Over A Decade Later
In “Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood,” you step into the shoes of the protagonist once again, as this game serves as a follow-up to the second installment and is part of the Ezio Trilogy. Your mission remains the same: fight against the Borgia family to liberate Rome, recover the Apple of Eden from the Templars’ grasp, and simultaneously rejuvenate both the city and the Brotherhood organization.
A good portion of the extra features involve rebuilding Rome, including fixing aqueducts, purchasing landmarks, and opening stores. To quickly travel between areas, players need to uncover shortcuts for travel, as these tunnels must be bought for each district; otherwise, they can’t be used. Luckily, the game franchise is famous for its entertaining parkour-like movements.
In addition to its appearance in “Revelations”, this tunnel network is unique within the “Assassin’s Creed” series, as it provides an alternative means of transportation compared to other titles which often feature fast-travel options like boats and travel stations. For the purpose of introducing diversity, we’ve chosen to showcase just one method in this case.
8. Grand Theft Auto Online
Players Can Cause As Much Or As Little Chaos As They Like
Fans eagerly await the launch of “Grand Theft Auto 6,” and in the meantime, they’re still savoring the expansive worlds offered by its predecessors. Similar to the storyline of “GTA5,” “Grand Theft Auto Online” is set within a city modeled after Los Angeles, known as Los Santos. As a multiplayer environment, it provides ample opportunities for troublemaking, be it racing, theft, or gambling.
In the world of Grand Theft Auto Online, there are numerous methods, from ordinary to extraordinary, for moving around – whether on land, water, or air. By summoning a taxi either by waving or utilizing the in-game cell phone to make a call, players can hop in, select their destination, and opt for “Trip Skip” – an engaging way to quickly teleport.
7. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim
One Of The Most Iconic RPGs
By this point, many gamers have extensively explored the captivating landscape and character-building aspects of Skyrim. Despite the game offering a convenient fast travel feature that allows players to move instantly to any previously discovered location from various spots, there are alternative, more engaging methods for immersion.
Taking horse-drawn carriages from each city’s stable offers players a convenient travel option. They can visit any other city without prior experience, making it an ideal choice for roleplaying as a traveling merchant or exhausted warrior. However, to reach Solstheim, they will require a boat ride if they possess the Dragonborn DLC expansion.
6. Fallout 4
The Sole Survivor And Dogmeat Against What’s Left Of The World
As a gamer, diving into the fourth epic chapter of the legendary post-apocalyptic saga, Fallout 4, I embark on a personal quest across the fractured wastelands of America in search of my lost child. Along the way, I engage in fierce battles, craft essential items, upgrade my skills, and build strategic bases. And when I’m not busy with those activities, I can quickly hop between familiar spots using the map for faster travel, although exploring on foot offers a more engrossing experience.
In the game Fallout 4, using a Vertibird signal grenade calls in one of the US’s military aircraft, the Vertibird, which you can then board. By selecting a spot on your map, the Vertibird will fly to that location and get as close as it can to you. Additionally, if it lands near hostile enemies, it will assist you by defending against them.
5. Marvel’s Spider-Man
Smooth And Satisfying Gameplay
As a gamer, I dive headfirst into the thrilling world of Marvel’s Spider-Man, where I embody the legendary Peter Parker. Facing off against notorious baddies like Doctor Octopus and Electro, I’m on a mission to safeguard New York City. What sets this game apart is its irresistible web-slinging and combat mechanics, which give the gaming experience a tangible sense of weight and momentum, making every journey a blast!
Players seeking a speedier navigation option can simply open the map and choose a previously explored destination. Yet, the game offers an engaging touch by depicting Spider-Man on a subway ride. This not only enhances realism and underscores Parker’s everyday life, but also provides a comical break from city swinging.
Fast travel is only unlocked after completing the “Wheels Within Wheels” main story quest.
4. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
One Of The Most Authentic And Immersive Games Of The 2020s
In the year 2025, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is among the larger independent games to be released, and it’s expected to receive numerous Game of the Year nominations. The game offers a rich blend of in-depth mechanics, role-playing features, historical authenticity, and captivating characters, creating an immersive gaming experience.
In the game KCD2, fast travel is an option, but it’s not without its perils and unlike many other games, it doesn’t happen instantly. As you navigate through the map, you can observe Henry’s journey unfold over time, and you might stumble upon random occurrences along the way. These could be anything from run-ins with bandits to discovering campsites; if you wish, you can pause at these spots or even decide to avoid them entirely.
3. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Slay Monsters And Save The World
As a dedicated gamer, I can confidently say that diving into The Witcher 3 is like stepping into a universe I’ve long been fascinated with, given its rich history in books and television. This game has earned its place among the all-time great RPGs, and I’m not surprised considering the epic storyline it offers.
In this game, I find myself battling not just monstrous creatures but also treacherous humans, all while trying to protect Ciri and the world from the Wild Hunt’s relentless invasion. The continent I traverse is a war-torn land, adding an extra layer of urgency to my quest.
Characters are able to quickly move between and within kingdoms by following signposts that have been discovered, but an alternative, more immersive option is traveling by boat. While navigating a ship, players can select a dock marked with an anchor to instantly travel to. This method introduces some constraints, which in turn enhances the role-playing aspect – envision Geralt, the renowned monster-slayer sailor, making his way across the seas.
2. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain
Nails The Open-World Elements
Among open-world games, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain stands out for its expansive size, rich content, and engaging gameplay. This is the franchise’s first significant foray into this genre, yet it doesn’t dilute the iconic Metal Gear feel. The story revolves around Snake as he traverses a conflict-ridden Afghanistan, with a major theme of revenge running throughout. The missions offer flexibility, allowing players to choose their own approach.
In MGS5, the fast travel system stands out as one of the most distinctive. Instead of using conventional methods, players must conceal themselves beneath a crate in designated loading zones for a truck to approach and carry them. These trucks serve as transportation for Snake, allowing him to be dropped off at any previously unlocked delivery points, which are unlocked by gathering the corresponding invoices.
1. Red Dead Redemption 2
Be An Honorable Vigilante Or Lawless Murderer
Red Dead Redemption 2 stands out as one of Rockstar’s most significant accomplishments yet. This game tells the story of outlaw Arthur Morgan and his criminal family, the Van Der Linde gang, who are trying to elude authorities while also gathering enough funds to retire from their lawless ways for good. In terms of narrative, Red Dead Redemption 2 truly shines, made even more impressive by its lifelike physics and graphics.
Red Dead Redemption 2 offers a more leisurely gaming experience compared to many open-world games, giving patient gamers a chance to deeply immerse themselves in its rich world. Instead of immediate accessibility, you’ll find stagecoaches and train stations scattered across the map for fast travel. This method, although not the quickest, provides a more cinematic and historically accurate journey, as it involves purchasing tickets and watching cutscenes before traveling.
Players can also fast travel from camps, provided Dutch’s lodging is upgraded.
