I carefully reviewed my collection of war games, selecting ten diverse titles spanning various time periods and unique gameplay styles. My choice leans towards more contemporary games that have undergone recent remakes or significant updates within the last two years. This list should serve as a well-rounded guide for those seeking war game recommendations to delve into during 2025.
Let me know if you agree, or if you think other games should be here!
10 – Second Front

There seems to have been considerable anticipation for Second Front prior to its 2022 launch, yet since then, it appears conversations about the game have dwindled. It’s possible I’m alone in this, but I continue to believe that Second Front is one of the top turn-based tactics wargames available today. To put it simply, Second Front could be likened to a turn-based version of Company of Heroes, but with an incredibly intricate gameplay, filled with multiple elements happening simultaneously. The fact that it’s turn-based makes managing all these aspects less daunting. It offers a wealth of content, boasting hundreds of units and numerous maps for players to explore, along with a user-friendly editor to design custom scenarios!
9 – Scramble: Battle of Britain

Initially, this game had been in development for a considerable period without much information released. However, once it was launched, it quickly gained appreciation among aviation enthusiasts and strategy gamers. The game “Scramble: Battle of Britain” is a tactical, turn-based dogfighting simulation where you manage a flight squadron. In each turn, both you and your adversary make decisions about the next move, such as turning left or right, ascending or descending, and whether to fire or not. Unlike typical flight simulators, in Scramble, you have time to carefully consider these choices instead of reacting instinctively. It’s important to note that the game is currently in Early Access, but being published by Slitherine gives me confidence about its future development.
8 – Scourge of War: Remastered

2024 saw the surprise launch of Armored Brigade 2, but if it hadn’t been for that, Scourge of War: Remastered would have snagged a spot in the Top 10 Strategy Games of the year. This remaster is a textbook example – it preserves the core gameplay while enhancing every aspect that matters for an improved gaming experience. The performance is smoother, the view distance expanded, graphics upgraded, high-definition unit sprites, and no more annoying input delay in controls. If you’re hankering to lead your Napoleonic armies in 2025, Scourge of War: Remastered is the strategy game that beats all others in the wargame genre.
7 – The Great War: Western Front

As a passionate enthusiast, I can confidently say there’s nothing quite like The Great War: Western Front when it comes to World War 1 strategy games. It’s the only one meticulously designed from the ground up with the sole intention of replicating this historical conflict authentically, offering mechanics and gameplay elements unparalleled elsewhere.
Just like Total War, it employs a grand campaign map, but what sets it apart is the inclusion of intense Real-Time Strategy (RTS) battles. The majority of your time will be spent here: constructing and enhancing your persistent trench network, commanding diverse units ranging from stormtroopers to infantry, tanks, multiple artillery types, and aircraft.
The ebb and flow of combat is remarkably realistic, with one side making progress and capturing enemy trenches, only for the other side to counterattack, and vice versa. This dynamic back-and-forth can last for quite some time, and the largest battles can stretch on for an hour or more.
6 – Armored Brigade 2

In simpler terms, Armored Brigade 2 is essentially the same as Armored Brigade but with a 3D upgrade. For me, this enhancement alone makes it one of my favorite strategy games ever created. If you’re searching for a tactical-level wargame set during the Cold War with intricate detail and large-scale gameplay, you might not find a better match at the moment. The shift to 3D has addressed all the issues I had with the original, particularly the difficulty in positioning and moving units from a top-down perspective. Now, you can mostly rely on your natural eye sight to navigate, which significantly improves the gameplay experience. What would make this great game even better is if they allow for more precise control over infantry, then it would be perfect.
