A handful of First-Person Shooter (FPS) games don’t have iconic adversaries quite like DOOM. From floating orbs resembling eyes to colossal crab-like monstrosities, the demonic figures intent on eliminating the player are not only terrifying but also awe-inspiring to behold. The latest addition to the DOOM series undeniably delivers when it comes to designing enemies and combat strategies for each encounter, ensuring that fans of the franchise won’t be disappointed.
Balancing fairness and unreasonableness in terms of challenge is quite tricky, and a significant part of the struggle lies in how enemies behave towards the player and the range of responses players can employ against each one. In the game ‘The Dark Ages’, there’s an extensive roster of adversaries. Some are easily defeated, but others present formidable challenges that demand more than just aiming and firing to survive.
8. Chaingunner Soldier
Offense And Defense Bundled Into One

In the game titled “The Dark Ages“, players frequently come across adversaries who wear armor or wield shields during their journey. Some of these enemies can be defeated with physical attacks, while others necessitate switching weapons for players to successfully defeat them. The Chaingunner Soldiers are a more powerful variant of the early shield grunts that players initially encounter, and they represent a substantial improvement over their original counterparts.
Managing to harm the shields to detonate them while simultaneously dodging their unexpectedly high damage, which can become lethal on higher settings, is challenging. The challenge intensifies when multiple targets must be handled concurrently and require time to defeat. This makes handling numerous shielded enemies particularly problematic in later stages of the game campaign.
7. Komodo
Speed And Tankiness At The Same Time

As a fan, I’d say Komodos make for formidable opponents, exuding an intimidating presence that matches their in-game ferocity. They’ve got this knack for unleashing fireballs at range and long-distance swipes that, while they can be parried, are a real nuisance; the swipes, if missed due to timing, can deal some hefty damage. The encounters with these creatures often require patience and strategic timing – it’s about waiting for the opportune moment to strike back.
The most challenging aspect lies in the agility of Komodos. They can swiftly traverse large distances within a brief period, and it seems harmless when they’re out of reach, but their extendable chain spear can strike through the player unexpectedly. This blend of rapid movement and long-range attacks makes them difficult to handle individually, and downright problematic in larger groups.
6. Nightmare Imp Stalker
They Could Be Anywhere

In DOOM: The Dark Ages, Nightmare Imp Stalkers are undeniably the most fearsome adversaries. Their name alone hints at their might, but it’s their unique skill set that truly makes them terrifying. What sets them apart is their uncanny ability to become nearly invisible, leaving only a faint, elusive shadow. With all the chaos of explosions and gunfire on screen, spotting this shadow can be quite challenging.
Instead of being easily spotted due to their invisibility, these enemies also evade the shield slam and toss, two crucial player strategies against tougher opponents. This necessitates cautious and accurate handling when dealing with them. In a game brimming with chaos and explosions, it’s surprisingly simple for such stealthy, strategic foes to catch the player off guard, potentially leading to their demise.
5. Agaddon Hunter
Patience Is The Only Way

Agaddon Hunters are formidable adversaries who embrace the complete medieval fantasy aesthetic by forgoing guns and distant attacks in favor of a sword and shield. These enemies engage players at close quarters with powerful, sweeping strikes. They possess the ability to jump great distances or maintain safety from afar, enabling other enemies to inflict damage while the Hunter is securely behind their shield.
It’s quite frustrating to encounter these characters because they constantly defend themselves, making it difficult for the player to cause substantial damage. This is often followed by a powerful attack that can deal heavy damage if the player isn’t prepared. They are swift and formidable, taking some time to defeat. Strategic timing and patience are crucial to avoid their relentless pursuit.
4. Acolyte
More Than Just A Magic Trick

Among airborne adversaries, Acolytes are undeniably one of the tougher opponents, known for their swiftness and long-range attacks which aim to eliminate players. Additionally, they possess a few defensive maneuvers to keep players alert. Instead of dashing, they use teleportation, while their protective strategy involves a purple barrier that makes them invulnerable until a clone is destroyed or a specific time elapses.
The group isn’t easily dismissable as weak, but when many of them gather together, simultaneously protecting and inflicting damage, it becomes quite challenging to survive against them, especially with additional adversaries joining in. They are far from a laughing matter when faced in combat, posing a significant challenge for the player if they are not prepared for their teleportation abilities and other surprise tactics.
3. Cyberdemon
Deadly Up Close And From Afar

In DOOM: The Dark Ages, Cyberdemons rank among the most formidable and challenging adversaries. With their impressive size comes an abundance of weaponry capable of demolishing anything in their wake. Armed with a rapid-firing machine gun arm and a swiftly-wielded sword, whether you’re engaging from afar or closing in for a confrontation, the Cyberdemon is always a potential menace.
These opponents are exceptionally challenging due to their robust health reserves, which correspond to a significant damage capacity. Each attack could be lethal if not properly blocked, and from a distance, their continuous damage is merciless and can swiftly reduce the Slayer to fragments within seconds. Each battle with them is an enduring struggle that demands both stamina and accuracy to survive.
2. Revenant
It’s Hard To Keep Up Against The Onslaught

Formidable adversaries known as Revenants pose a lethal threat to players, being both tricky to hit and tough to defeat. Agile in flight, they dart through the skies and momentarily become invincible, while raining down powerful ranged attacks that are rarely deflectable by parries.
Revenants are very difficult enemies to fight against because they move quickly, can’t be easily hit, and have attacks that deal a lot of damage, which only occasionally can be blocked with a parry.
Fighting them in groups can be quite challenging due to numerous attacks to avoid and angles to consider. It’s tough to concentrate fire on a swift-moving individual target because it’s almost impossible. Players should be mindful of their damage potential as even a few skulls can swiftly eliminate them from the battlefield, and there’s essentially no safe distance when facing these airborne threats.
1. Cosmic Baron
Non-Stop Damage And Rage

Giant Space Warriors exhibit relentless anger, constantly attacking without pause. They charge headlong into battle, leaving the player scrambling for a response, as they swiftly attack with a barrage of powerful blows that inflict massive damage and keep coming at an astonishing rate.
Although mastering parries may appear easy, nailing the timing can be quite challenging. A missed parry, especially on higher difficulty levels, could potentially end a player’s game within seconds. These adversaries may seem slow and cumbersome, but speed is their greatest ally. They can easily take players by surprise if they are not vigilant.
