This could manifest as friendly characters reacting to favors, choices, or dialogue options in meaningful ways, or as a lasting enmity between the player and adversaries or hostile factions over time.

However, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain cleverly addresses this issue by allowing enemy soldiers to execute the balancing act on their own, courtesy of the “Revenge System.” Whenever Snake appears to have a foolproof strategy, soldiers start adjusting their tactics based on past experiences with similar situations.
As a stealthy gamer, I’ve noticed that overusing Fulton balloons to take out guards can make them wary of the skies, quick to spot and shoot them down. Similarly, relying too much on the cloak of night might lead to encounters with soldiers equipped with night-vision goggles. In other words, each open-world mission in this stealth sandbox game can drastically alter due to my past tactical decisions. Additionally, my allies on the battlefield, from my trusty horse to my sniper backup, become more effective over time as we spend more time together. This bonding time eventually unlocks extra abilities and equipment for them.

The consequences of this choice will significantly impact how the game’s characters perceive the player throughout their journey.
Across the map of New Vegas, this pattern occurs frequently, yet it’s not just the local characters who are observing and remembering. As Courier Six gains prominence, influential figures will also keep tabs. In interactions with them, they may refer to significant choices made by the player throughout Vegas, and in some cases, adjust their subsequent actions based on these recollections.

Repairing a damaged relationship is often simpler than rebuilding a bridge that was destroyed by humiliating someone who used to be close. A Sim’s memories aren’t just fleeting; they can suddenly recall joyful or sorrowful moments. Players have the opportunity to witness their Sims’ memories, whether they were made with others or during significant life events, through the Memories scrapbook.

While they often spend their time farming and making peculiar noises among themselves, villagers exhibit a surprising knack for discussing the player and their interactions with them, essentially engaging in what can be likened to gossip.
For instance, they could discuss a profitable trade in emeralds. If many villagers view the player favorably, this can lead to higher prices for trades and increased protection from iron golems. Healing villagers who have been turned into zombies by curing them will enhance the player’s reputation, but aggression towards or killing of villagers will make them hostile towards the player, causing iron golems to attack and other villagers to avoid the player.

Wearing a black hat and behaving aggressively, greedily, or impolitely can make townsfolk avoid Arthur Morgan as he walks by, or politely ask him to refrain from causing further trouble. Merchants will recall if Arthur has robbed them and respond accordingly. What truly stands out, though, are the characters within the Van der Linde gang.
Just as people in real life may encounter positive or negative interactions, so do the characters within the story. These encounters shape the narrative significantly. Building friendships and sharing resources among the group will encourage them to share more during campfire chats. Arthur has opportunities to uncover hidden treasures scattered across the map and even acquire special abilities from those who recognize his good deeds. However, self-centered behavior within the group will not go unpunished; persistent misbehavior could lead to Arthur’s expulsion from the group.
