Top 8 Evil Monkeys That Will Give You Nightmares

Summary

  • Monkeys in movies can be fun, unsettling, or downright evil.
  • Examples include Ozymandias, the monkeys in Jumanji, and the Gray Gorillas in Congo.
  • Monkeys like King Louie, Ella, and the Sumatran Rat Monkey can have varying degrees of impact.

Regardless of whether someone accepts the concept of human evolution or not, it’s undeniable that creatures like monkeys, apes, gorillas, and so forth bear a striking resemblance to humans. This might explain why they make engaging companions in both real life and films, as they convincingly portray human emotions. However, this similarity can also be unnerving since they’re not quite human, leaving an uncanny gap that we struggle to comprehend fully, which can lead to some awkwardness.

Innumerable instances of malicious monkeys can be found in films, such as Osgood Perkins’ “The Monkey” serving as a notable example. However, one may wonder how many additional examples there are hidden within the expansive world of cinema and how their acts of wickedness measure up?

8. Ozymandias/Golden Monkey (The Golden Compass)

An Evil Familiar

The movie “The Golden Compass” is a film adaptation from the larger “His Dark Materials” book series. It’s set in a world parallel to our own, centering around a girl named Lyra. In this world, every person is born with a companion animal that’s linked to them by an invisible cord.

In the movie “The Golden Compass”, one of the main villains, Marissa Coulter, is associated with a Golden Monkey, unnamed in this film yet known as Ozymandias elsewhere. This monkey carries out malevolent acts on behalf of Marissa in search of an item belonging to Lyra. Though it may be more intimidating in the HBO series and the books, Ozymandias remains a formidably menacing monkey within “The Golden Compass”.

7. The Monkeys (Jumanji)

Playing A Board Game Results In The Release Of Some Truly Evil Monkeys

Jumanji can be seen as an entertaining family-friendly adventure film or a frightening horror experience for children, depending on when it’s viewed. The movie’s title refers to a mysterious board game discovered by characters Judy and Peter within their new home. The game seems to communicate with them through rhythmic drumbeats, reminiscent of the drumming heard in ‘The Monkey’.

Upon being unveiled, the children find themselves bound to finish this board game, with their dice throws impacting reality itself. One of the most chilling moments in the film occurs when the monkeys escape and wreak havoc throughout town. Moreover, Peter undergoes a curse that transforms him into a monkey in a gruesome depiction of body horror, enhancing the sense of dread these creatures instill in audiences.

6. King Louie (The Jungle Book 2016)

A Huge Monkey Who Shares Features With His Voice Actor

In 1967, Disney transformed The Jungle Book into a film, and it quickly became a timeless classic. One of the catchiest tunes was “I Wanna Be Like You,” sung by King Louie. King Louie is an orangutan who desires the human boy, Mowgli, to share with him the power of fire. This scene is only a minor aspect of the movie, and it’s more humorous than serious, as King Louie isn’t particularly large.

In the 2016 adaptation of The Jungle Book, King Louie was significantly larger and had an eerie appearance due to some design influences from his voice actor, Christopher Walken. This gives him a resemblance to a challenging boss character from the game Dark Souls. Although this part of the movie remains minor, it stands out more vividly than ever before, particularly due to the intense chase sequence that followed.

5. Ella (Monkey Shines)

An Overly Attached Monkey Who Develops A Taste For Killing

In a somewhat surprising twist, the movie “Monkey Shines” features a toy monkey on its cover that bears a striking resemblance to the primate in “The Monkey”. Despite this similarity, these two films are entirely distinct. Unlike the protagonist in “The Monkey”, this story revolves around a college student named Allan, who finds himself wheelchair-bound following an unfortunate accident. In an attempt to aid Allan, his closest friend, Geoffrey, gifts him one of his lab monkeys, whom they aptly name Ella, to perform tasks on Allan’s behalf.

As a film enthusiast, Ella has brought an unexpected spark into my otherwise somber existence. Yet, as time passed, her affection towards me grew possessive and dangerous, leading her to act violently on my behalf and take lives. It’s almost unimaginable that such a small creature could be capable of such destruction – but make no mistake, she is a destructive force to be reckoned with.

4. Gordy (Nope)

A TV Star Gone Bad

The movie titled “Nope” mainly focuses on alien horror rather than monkeys, but it occasionally returns to the set of a light-hearted family sitcom named “Gordy’s Home.” This sitcom revolves around a chimpanzee character named Gordy being brought up in an ordinary American household.

Among the supporting actors, there was a fellow named Ricky who had previously appeared in the series. Yet, it transpires that another character, Gordy, lost control one day, leading to a tragic incident where he took numerous lives on set. Despite the fact that the movie “Nope” primarily centers around the terrifying alien entity haunting the main characters from start to finish, Gordy’s gruesome murder scene stands out as one of the most unforgettable moments.

3. The Gray Gorillas (Congo)

Scary Gorillas That Stalk The Main Characters

Michael Crichton’s Congo is another one of his works, famously known for penning the blockbuster novel Jurassic Park. Although its film adaptation didn’t achieve the same level of success, it has a dedicated fanbase. The story revolves around a team of researchers who aim to return Amy, a gorilla proficient in sign language, back to her jungle home. However, their guides have ulterior motives – they’re secretly on a quest to discover an ancient city hidden within the Congo.

In the fabled city of Zinj, there’s rumored to be extraordinary minerals known as blue diamonds. When the explorers locate these gems, they unexpectedly encounter their guardians – formidable Gray Gorillas. These primates persistently shadow the expedition throughout the movie, culminating in a climactic showdown in the film’s final scene.

2. Sumatran Rat Monkey (Dead Alive)

A Frightful Creature That Can Turn Those It Bites Into Zombies

Dead Alive, originally titled Braindead, represents an early cinematic piece directed by Peter Jackson, who later gained fame with the Lord of the Rings series. The movie commences with a band of explorers departing Skull Island while carrying a cage containing a Sumatran Rat Monkey. This unsettling monkey is subsequently sold to a zoo in Newtown, a quaint town nestled in New Zealand.

In the movie, a fresh sequence unfolds as Lionel, who is polite yet clumsy, escorts his date Paquita to the same zoo. Meanwhile, Lionel’s mother, Vera, secretly follows them out of envy for their blossoming romance. During this pursuit, she encounters an aggressive monkey and gets bitten, causing her to transform into a zombie. From that point on, the story takes a dark turn, with Vera and her zombified monkey-infected form becoming the central focus of a nightmarish journey straight into the depths of hell.

1. The Monkey

A Creepy Toy With Supernatural Abilities

In this tale, an ordinary-looking toy monkey poses a significant danger to mankind. As the story unfolds, it reveals its true nature: pure evil. The monkey remains unnamed and its origins remain shrouded in mystery throughout the narrative. Its connection to the Shelburn family seems undeniable, possibly linked to a curse that has been passed down through generations. The movie begins with Captain Petey Shelburn, portrayed by Adam Scott from ‘Severance’, attempting to discard it, but the monkey mysteriously reappears.

Whenever someone cranks up the key, the monkey starts beating rhythmically. Regrettably, shortly after, a violent death occurs with no discernible pattern or explanation. To add to the horror, this entity seems indestructible and immune to death, leaving us powerless in our attempts to destroy it.
