Top 8 Most Brutal Fights in Invincible Comics

As a passionate moviegoer who adores comic books, I can’t help but express my admiration for Robert Kirkman’s Invincible series, which has taken the superhero world by storm. The success of its animated TV series on Amazon Prime has undeniably played a significant role in this popularity surge.

Reminiscent of classic millennial animated superhero shows like Justice League and X-Men Evolution, it masterfully combines nostalgia with Kirkman’s unique character development and a realistic portrayal of a world inhabited by superheroes. In a genre that’s been yearning for a refreshing breeze, Invincible stands out as a welcome change, offering an engaging and relatable experience for fans like me.

A defining feature of the series is intense battles among superpowered individuals, marked by graphic violence, gore, dismemberment, and extreme struggle. Fans of the animated TV show have merely sampled the spectacular fights and strong characters in Invincible, with much more to savor as the series stays true to its comic book origins.

This list contains heavy spoilers for Invincible across the comics and animated series!

8. Invincible vs. Omni-Man

The Very First All-Viltrumite Fight in the Series is Shockingly Intense

  • Featured in: Season 1, Episode 8 “Where I Really Come From”
  • Based On: Invincible #12

In the initial season of Invincible, the climactic battle unfolds between Invincible and Omni-Man, a fight that stands out as one of the most intense and violent encounters. The emotional context – a father fighting his own son, coupled with its early occurrence in the series – makes it a shockingly impactful moment for viewers. Throughout the fight, it’s clear that Invincible is on the receiving end of a harsh beating from his father. However, the dialogue exchanged between them is particularly poignant and powerful.

As a die-hard movie fan, I’d rephrase it like this: During our latest showdown, Omni-Man’s been tossing caution to the wind, causing mass destruction without much care for the bystanders. At one point, he pinned me down in front of an oncoming train, leaving a gruesome scene of death and dismemberment among the passengers. I could only watch helplessly as my own body became the tool of such carnage. By the end of the brutal battle, I lay battered and broken at the foot of a mountain, having been beaten within an inch of my life by my own father. In a chilling confession, he admitted his intention to conquer our planet and enslave its people.

7. Machine Head’s Hired Muscle vs. Invincible And Co.

An Unexpected Heavy Hitter Decimates Everyone

  • Featured in: Season 1, Episode 5 “That Actually Hurt”
  • Based On: Invincible #19

In my humble opinion as a movie critic, the fight between Mark and Battle Beast from season one of “Invincible” was an unexpected standout. Unlike previous battles where Mark took down street-level thugs, this encounter presented a formidable challenge in the shape of Battle Beast, hired muscle for none other than the Earth-bound crime boss, Machine Head. The twist being, Battle Beast is not just any ordinary henchman; he’s one of the series’ strongest characters, even holding his own against the mighty Viltrumites. Quite ironic, isn’t it? That a mere syndicate boss could recruit such a powerhouse.

After overpowering many of the other thugs, Invincible meets his match against Battle Beast. As the ferocious feline combatant prepared to deliver the finishing blow, the newly assembled Guardians of the Globe arrived on the scene. Although they successfully defeated the remaining goons, Battle Beast dealt a seemingly lethal blow to Invincible and swiftly dispatched Black Samson and Monster Girl, who charged at him in response. In the end, he departed from the battlefield using a portal, boasting that the fight was beneath him, having been promised formidable opponents instead. What makes this confrontation particularly harsh is that the protagonist of the series suffers a severe beating, highlighting just how overmatched he was in these battles.

6. Invincible and Omni Man vs. Lucan, Thula and Vidor

Brutal Viltrumte-on-Viltrumite Action

  • Featured in: Season 2, Episode 4 “It’s Been A While”
  • Issue Based On: Invincible #29

In the second season of “Invincible,” Mark receives an invitation from a Thraxan to prevent a catastrophic event on their planet. Upon arrival, he encounters Omni-Man, who explains that he has altered his ways and seeks aid in shielding the Thraxans and their world from approaching Viltrumites, who aim to apprehend him for desertion. The Viltrumites include Lucan, Thula, and Vidor. Notably, it is Lucan who initially locates Invincible hiding with Omni-Man’s Thraxan wife, Andressa, and their son, Oliver, in a cave.

In this scenario, it’s clear that Lucan proves too formidable for Invincible to manage. Enter Omni-Man, who appears to subdue Lucan by slashing open his abdomen, exposing his internal organs. Subsequently, both Invincible and Omni-Man encounter Thula and Vidor. While Omni-Man manages to stand his ground against Vidor, Invincible initially gains the advantage against Thula but is on the verge of being defeated by her. In a swift sequence of events, Omni-Man eliminates Vidor with a brutal punch that deforms his skull, and then takes out Thula using a move reminiscent of ‘Mortal Kombat’ fatalities, shattering her jaw with his elbow. Just as this unfolds, Lucan reappears, surprising Omni-Man and delivering a devastating knee strike that breaks his spine. This fight serves as the first instance in the series to showcase the gruesome intensity of Viltrumite combat.

5. Thragg vs. Omni Man

When Even Omni Man is Helplessly Outmatched in a Fight

  • Issue: Invincible #138
  • Release: July 2017

As the Grand Regent of the Viltrumites, Thragg exhibits a merciless rule that even Conquest, a fellow powerful figure, respects with trepidation. His presence has a profound impact on those around him, softening his inherently cruel disposition. From birth, he was nurtured to possess unparalleled immunity and training, destined to surpass all other Viltrumites and become the most formidable in history. His quest is to identify the one true heir to the emperor who will carry on the Viltrumite ideals.

In issue #138 of ‘Invincible’, Thragg, father of the Thraxan offspring, spearheads a fierce attack against the Coalition of Planets. When Invincible, Omni-Man, and Allen arrive, Omni-Man rushes straight to confront Thragg in combat. The fight is intense, but it’s evident that Thragg has the upper hand; he crushes Omni-Man’s hand with a headbutt. In the end, Thragg impales Omni-Man, but at the last second, Omni-Man manages to dodge the strike and save his heart. Unfortunately, Thragg then tears off Omni-Man’s torso from his hips and retrieves his heart. Through this gruesome display of power, Thragg solidifies his position as one of the strongest characters in the series, demonstrating that even Omni-Man is no match for him.

4. Conquest vs. Invincible

The Fight That Pushed Invincible To The Brink

  • Featured in: Season 3, Episode 8 “I Thought You’d Never Shut Up”
  • Issue Based On: Invincible #62

This battle is legendary and is likely one of the most anticipated fights for fans of the “Invincible” comic series. The anticipation among viewers was immense in the lead-up to this fight, as they had known it would occur at the end of season 3. And, it did not disappoint. Conquest is a particularly cruel Viltrumite, even by their ruthless standards, and he’s also extremely powerful. The tension among spectators is high due to his arrival right after the Invincible War. This fight starts with Invincible feeling quite self-assured, seeking an outlet for his accumulated frustration from past events.

In this battle, it’s evident that Conquest is dealing with a different league compared to the others he has faced. For the majority of the time, he seems to be taunting and tormenting Invincible, boasting about his delight in causing pain and misery to his adversaries. This provocation often pushes Invincible to the brink of fury.

During this fight, Conquest inflicts severe injuries on Invincible, Oliver, and Atom Eve. He leaves Oliver, a child, in a state of shock by nearly tearing him apart after knocking out his teeth. The damage he inflicts on Atom Eve is even more brutal, as he destroys her face with a powerful punch.

Invincible suffers extensive injuries in this battle, with all his limbs broken. The fight concludes with Invincible retaliating in a fit of desperate rage, repeatedly headbutting Conquest and causing him significant facial damage.

3. Invincible vs. Conquest: The Rematch

Cecil’s Mistake Comes Full Circle

  • Issue: Invincible #72
  • Release: May 2010

In no other encounter has Invincible been driven to the brink of uncontrollable fury as Conquest has managed to do, a fact demonstrated yet again in Issue #72 of ‘Invincible’. Despite being instructed to destroy Conquest’s remains, Cecil maintains his existence and seals him away in a prison near Earth’s core. Unfortunately, this decision turns out to be a grave mistake as Conquest effortlessly escapes from the prison and returns to Viltrum to confront Thragg’s wrath and plead for another opportunity. This request is granted when Conquest is given a second chance at a showdown with Invincible, who has now allied himself with the Coalition of Planets in their mission to challenge and vanquish the Viltrum Empire.

Unaware of Conquest’s destiny, Invincible is taken aback and becomes enraged upon learning of Cecil’s decision to spare Conquest. Without hesitation, he rushes towards Conquest, engaging in a fierce battle. In the heat of this space fight, Oliver runs out of breath and heads for the nearest planet. Disregarding Invincible, Omni-Man, and other Viltrumites, Conquest pursues Oliver. Noticing this, Invincible gives chase. Before Conquest can harm Oliver, Invincible seizes him and starts to strangle him, depriving him of air as a desperate measure. Although Viltrumites are known for their ability to hold their breath for extended periods, this move is a last resort. Despite Conquest continuously attacking his abdomen, even piercing it and exposing Invincible’s organs, he refuses to release his grip on Conquest’s throat. Eventually, through sheer force of will, Invincible kills the wicked Viltrumite, hanging on to life by a thread.

2. Battle Beast vs. Thragg

A Battle That Pushes the Strongest Viltrumite For Days

  • Issue: Invincible #115
  • Release: November 2014

Throughout the entire series, Battle Beast seeks a worthy opponent for an honorable, life-ending battle, and he finds this in Thragg, the Grand Regent of the Viltrumites. This battle, renowned as one of the greatest 1v1s in comic book history, demonstrates Battle Beast’s immense power among the series’ strongest characters. The fight unfolds across several issues, from Invincible #115 to Invincible #120. As the story develops, brief interludes within the combat scenes offer glimpses of the intense, gruesome nature of their battle.

Over several grueling days, this battle scene is filled with intense, gory moments. From Battle Beast sinking his teeth into Thragg’s skull, to Thragg retaliating with a powerful uppercut to Battle Beast’s jaw, the violence is relentless. The fight reaches its climax when Thragg, pulling out a pre-inflicted wound from before the battle, rips Battle Beast’s heart from his exposed wound, as he had an advantage due to being wounded by Rognar earlier.

1. Invincible vs. Thragg

A Hardcore Battle on the Surface of the Sun

  • Issue: Invincible #140
  • Release: September 2017

As a die-hard movie buff, let me tell you that the climactic showdown between Invincible and Thragg takes the cake for the most jaw-dropping fight in the entire series. It’s packed with nonstop action and eye-catching visuals that leave you breathless. What truly sets this battle apart is its extraordinary setting – it unfolds on the blazing surface of the sun!

But here’s what really gets me: Thragg had just brutally murdered Invincible’s father, Omni-Man, right in front of him. This emotional blow was more than enough to push Invincible over the edge. With rage coursing through his veins, he charges at Thragg and shoves him towards the Sun. The battle rages on, with both combatants’ skin melting under the intense heat and radiation of the Sun. It’s a spectacle that will stay etched in my memory for a long time to come.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but describe the scene where Invincible, in a desperate move, pushes Thragg towards the scorching surface of the Sun. This unexpected act left me stunned, as it never crossed my mind that Invincible would go this far – even risking his own life to end Thragg. In a last-ditch effort, Thragg attempts to knock Invincible off him and flee from the Sun’s fiery embrace. However, Invincible refuses to let go, eventually leading to Thragg’s demise due to an open wound that accelerated his melting in the intense heat of the Sun. Fortunately for Invincible, Robot intervenes by sending his armor to shield his body and keep him alive until he could be transported back to the Coalition’s base. What a rollercoaster of emotions!
