The Best American Civil War Videogames On PC In 2024

7- Grand Tactician: The Civil War (1861-1865)

Kick off our list with the latest name: Grand Tactician – The Civil War (1861-1865). Despite my glowing reviews, it’s not reaching higher spots due to an ongoing issue of persistent bugs that seem to haunt it. The experience can vary greatly depending on the patch you play, making it either fantastic or frustrating. It’s unfortunate because this game has the most promise among all the ones listed here.

Describing Grand Tactician might be likened to American Civil War: Total War. This game features a vast, real-time grand campaign map where players oversee the economy, diplomacy, and military strategies of either the Union or Confederacy. When two armies clash, the action shifts to a battlefield, again in real-time. The battles are remarkably large-scale, with some engagements potentially lasting multiple days.

In a unique twist from the usual gameplay style, Grand Tactician’s DLC “Whisky & Lemons” incorporates role-playing game (RPG) aspects into the game. This allows you to craft and command your own officer, initially leading just a single regiment. Through continuous promotions, you could eventually control an entire army or even the entire campaign. It’s a fascinating feature that introduces fresh elements seldom seen in other games. The charm lies in playing as a minor yet crucial piece within a vast machinery, and your small actions can significantly impact outcomes, like holding a strategic ridge.

It’s great to see that Grand Tactician: The Civil War is still developing and presenting new perspectives on the American Civil War.

6- Sid Meier’s Gettysburg!

Without a doubt, Sid Meier’s Gettysburg is an essential game on any list. Known as the definitive wargame for its portrayal of the pivotal conflict, The Battle of Gettysburg, it offers players the chance to lead Union or Confederate troops, meticulously positioning them across the hallowed grounds of history.

1997 saw the launch of a game that stood out for its commitment to historical accuracy and captivating gameplay, making it an essential play for both Civil War enthusiasts and gaming aficionados alike. With its rich tactical depth, interconnected scenarios ideal for campaign play, formidable AI, and immense recognition within the Civil War strategy gaming community, Sid Meier’s Gettysburg continues to be a classic in the genre. Two years after this, in 1999, another masterpiece emerged from the same creator: Sid Meier’s Antietam!

5- Ultimate General: Gettysburg

Ultimate General: Gettysburg is an exceptional real-time strategy game that closely adheres to the blueprint set by Sid Meier years ago. Developed by the mind behind the Darth Mod Total War mods, Ultimate General: Gettysburg delivers a gripping portrayal of the Battle of Gettysburg. In this game, players lead either Union or Confederate troops through a sequence of prepared scenarios, or opt to engage in the entire battle.

The game stands out for its advanced AI, customizable to create various characters, ensuring a unique gaming experience each time you play. Additionally, it features an inventive and exciting movement system that enables players to draw paths for troops to follow, providing a degree of precision rarely seen in games that rely on point-and-click controls.

I have a strong affection for Ultimate General: Gettysburg, and it remains a go-to game for me due to its enjoyable short 20-minute scenarios, which offer ample room for exploration. This game initially sparked my curiosity about the American Civil War.

4- Civil War 2

Few grand-strategy video games focusing on the American Civil War exist. My co-host Al suggests this scarcity stems from the conflict being uninteresting, but given his British background, it could be the remnants of a disappointed former adversary speaking. Among these few titles, Civil War 2 stands out as a notable exception confirming the rule.

This multiplayer grand strategy game, published in 2013 by AGEOD, has gained cult status due to its immersive grand strategy military management experience. You’ll assume control over constructing, organizing, and leading armies for either the Confederates or the Union. The game operates on a turn-based system with turns lasting two weeks, divided into 14 phases – one per day. Since actions occur concurrently, it’s essential to predict your opponent’s next move and adjust your strategy accordingly. If reinforcements arrive a single day late for an ongoing three-day battle, the outcome of the war could be drastically altered.

even on today’s powerful computers, the game might not run flawlessly.

3- Wargame Design Studios: Civil War Battles

It’s unlikely you’ll find a top-notch list of historical games without a title from Wargame Design Studios. Their collection of turn-based strategy games provides an incredibly intricate and detailed portrayal of every era they tackle, and the American Civil War is no different in this regard.

In their Civil War Battles series, each game zeroes in on particular campaigns (comprising multiple battles), offering players an immersive, detailed look at these historical conflicts. Additionally, there are numerous alternative scenario possibilities, with each game providing between 200 to 400 scenarios based on the title. This equates to a substantial amount of content. With 16 games in the series, you’d find yourself engaged in more scenarios than the actual duration of the war itself.

2- Scourge of War: Gettysburg

If you’re seeking a video game that offers an intricate portrayal of battles, look no further than the Scourge of War series. Prior to their development of one of the finest Napoleonic Strategy games, Scourge of War: Waterloo, the Norbsoft team constructed a highly comprehensive and lifelike depiction of the Battle of Gettysburg.

Game Scourge of War: Gettysburg – A Real-Time Strategy Experience

This game, Scourge of War: Gettysburg, is a top pick for enthusiasts of both the American Civil War era and strategic real-time gaming. I can only wish that it receives an upgrade similar to Scourge of War: Waterloo, hopefully leading to a remastered version in the near future. Additionally, there are extra battle packs available for Pipe Creek, Antietam, Chancellorsville, and Brandy Station as downloadable content.

1- Ultimate General: Civil War

I’d like to share my personal preference here: Among all American Civil War video games, Ultimate General: Civil War stands out as my favorite. It builds upon the foundation laid by its predecessor, Ultimate General: Gettysburg, and significantly broadens its scope while maintaining the exceptional AI, intuitive controls, and stunning visuals. Rather than trying to revolutionize elements that didn’t require change, the developers introduced a campaign mode (though it leans more towards a guided experience) and re-enacted the key battles of the American Civil War.

This game is exceptional in that it combines historical authenticity with user-friendly gameplay, creating a rare hardcore title. Players can lead massive armies into battle and make strategic decisions. The game’s focus on epic battles, coupled with its easy-to-use controls and impressive graphics, makes it an exhilarating adventure for both newcomers and experienced strategy players alike.

For those who enjoy games set in the era of the American Civil War, I’d highly recommend giving Ultimate General: Civil War a try.
