Summary
- The AC franchise features diverse protagonists, including women, each adding unique elements to gameplay and story.
- Aveline and Evie Frye challenged traditional gaming narratives by providing strong female assassins.
- Kassandra is a standout character in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, praised for her charisma, humor, and strong voice acting.
The Assassin’s Creed series, boasting more than a dozen primary and related games, consistently broadens its storyline by offering fresh escapades set in distinct eras and landscapes. This expansion often includes the introduction of new characters to control, either exploring an intriguing locale or executing missions that require strategic stealth maneuvers.
Over time, Ubisoft has expanded its wide cast of characters by introducing female protagonists alongside well-known male characters like Ezio Auditore and Edward Kenway. Each female character adds a distinctive touch to the Assassin Brotherhood in aspects such as gameplay, storytelling, and acting, with some standing out more than others.
8. Layla Hassan
The Modern Day Storyline Is Rarely Interesting
In the Assassin’s Creed series, there’s a pattern where players are occasionally shifted from the game world to manage a character in present day. For instance, in Assassin’s Creed: Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla, Layla Hassan employs the Animus to revisit the past lives of Bayek and Aya. It’s also common for fans to express indifference towards these present-day segments.
Layla Hassan is commendable as one of the few enduring modern-day heroes apart from Desmond Miles. Generally speaking, she’s a charming character who exchanges witty dialogues with her Brotherhood companions. However, it was the gameplay aspects that seemed less captivating, often involving repetitive tasks that felt superfluous when players yearned to resume their roles as Medjay or Vikings.
7. Shao Jun
The Oft-Forgotten Apprentice Of Ezio
In the 16th century China setting of Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China, you meet Shao Jun, a disciple of the revered Ezio Auditore, who stood against the Mongol invasion. This less celebrated spin-off is frequently lauded for its blend of 2.5D gameplay and distinctive mechanics, creating a game that deserves more recognition.
In addition to being the inaugural Chinese character within the series, Shao Jun was portrayed as a straightforward and unwavering figure in her role as an Assassin, tirelessly working against the Templars. Although growth in characters can be enjoyable, fans valued having a character who is aware of her lethal prowess and confidently displays it.
6. Aya (Assassin’s Creed Origins)
The First Assassin Was Sidelined For Most Of The Game
In the game “Assassin’s Creed: Origins”, Aya plays a significant role as Bayek’s wife and, given that the Templars were responsible for the death of her son, she harbors a strong hatred towards them. This tragic event propelled her on a mission to seek justice, which eventually led to the establishment of the Hidden Ones, an organization that would later develop into the Assassin Brotherhood.
Instead of the typical storyline where Aya and Bayek form a bond through their shared assassin roles, they maintain a persistent, non-toxic divide; acknowledging that their circumstances have changed significantly. Aya, an intriguing character, is somewhat limited due to her infrequent playability in the game. Regrettably, this means that players can’t fully immerse themselves in the expansive open-world environment or customize loadouts, as Bayek’s equipment offers a more engaging experience.
5. Eivor
The Viking Protagonist Can Be Male Or Female
In the role of the ascending Viking leader named Eivor, players have the liberty to select either male or female at the onset of Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. Both portrayals are skillfully executed by their respective actors, however, Eivor’s character and narrative have been a subject of criticism among the fanbase for being less engaging in terms of personality and storyline, despite the option to customize their dialogue.
In the case of “Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla“, opinions are split due to its expansive game world being perceived as overly bulky, given Ubisoft’s adoption of a semi-live-service format. Regrettably, the protagonist Eivor seems somewhat underdeveloped in terms of character depth, with a thirst for revenge and a desire to conquer lands being their primary motivations. Yet, Eivor remains engaging to play, offering numerous personalization options that let you tailor them to your liking.
4. Aveline De Grandpré
From Elegant Riches To Rebellious Vigilante
Stepping into the shoes of Aveline De Grandpré, I found myself immersed in Louisiana following the French and Indian War of the 18th century, as portrayed by Liberation HD – a unique addition to the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Aveline was the trailblazing female protagonist that graced this captivating game world.
Born into affluence, Aveline found herself disturbed by the injustices prevalent in her world, particularly the heinous practice of slavery. Instead of passively observing, she chose to actively resist, using her skills as an assassin. She was more than just a playable character; she offered a refreshing gaming experience, having been initially exclusive to PS Vita before being upgraded for PS3 and Xbox 360. Her enhanced gameplay, compared to Assassin’s Creed 3, included the unique ability to wield two weapons simultaneously and execute a powerful Chain Kill special attack.
3. Evie Frye
The Frye Twins Were Unconventional Assassins
In the game “Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate,” siblings Evie Frye and her brother Jacob display an unusual take on their roles within the Assassin Brotherhood. Evie often comes across as calm and composed, in stark contrast to Jacob, who is charismatic but impulsive and arrogant from the outset. The player has the ability to switch between these two characters as they traverse Victorian London.
In their gaming styles, the Frye twins’ distinct personalities emerge: Jacob prefers head-on combat, while Evie leans toward stealth and infiltration. Just like Jacob, Evie is not an immaculate hero, which gives the Frye twins a relatable, down-to-earth quality that fans eagerly anticipate seeing again in future games.
2. Kassandra
The Closest Thing To A Wonder Woman Game
In the epic Greek journey of “Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey,” players are offered two main characters: Kassandra or her brother Alexios. While their storylines remain essentially the same, the choice is largely dependent on personal preference for the character. Interestingly, Kassandra has garnered more popularity among players.
In the game “Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey,” most fans consider Kassandra to be a more preferred character compared to Alexios. This preference is largely due to Kassandra’s captivating charm, wit, and exceptional voice performance. Kassandra exhibits both intense and powerful warrior traits, but what truly endears her to fans is her nurturing qualities, making her as adored for her tenderness as she is feared for her ferocity.
1. Fujibayashi Naoe
Tragedy Turns Her Into The Greatest Shinobi
To draw players deeply into the tale of “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows,” Ubisoft crafted a heartrending prologue for Fujibayashi Naoe, making her a relatable and compassionate character due to the significant losses she suffers at the hands of the antagonists, much like Bayek in “Origins.
Her character development is further reinforced by more thoughtful decisions made by players regarding her dialogues.
Naoe’s story is supported by gameplay that lets players roam through feudal Japan in the role of a shinobi, tracking down those who have caused her harm. The shinobi’s combat and stealth tactics align well with the Assassin’s Creed series, offering a mix of conventional gameplay with the RPG-like aspects found in later games.
