In Monster Hunter Wilds, there’s an enormous variety of armor sets for the hunters to select, yet not every set is valuable enough to warrant using resources for their creation.
In the same vein as past games, every armor collection comes equipped with embedded Equipment Skills and bonus perks. Some of these skills cater to specific builds, enhancing particular weapons or tasks, whereas others offer all-purpose advantages that aid your beast-slaying expeditions.
As a seasoned gamer, I’ve tailored this guide to target the advanced stages of play, dividing the content between Low and High Rank tiers. This structured approach will smoothly guide you into the endgame, helping you avoid wasting precious resources on specialized equipment that might not be essential for your progression.
Best Low Rank armor sets
After completing the campaign in Monster Hunter Wilds, you’ll get rid of your Low Rank armor. However, some pieces from this lower tier are potent enough to withstand even the most challenging Brute Wyvern battles that the game may present to you in the High Rank.
Additionally, it’s important to mention that having several identical items from the same set offers significant advantages in terms of Set Bonuses and Group Skills. However, experimenting with combining different sets is also beneficial because most Group Skills activate when just a portion of the required set is equipped, granting their full benefits.
Balahara
With superior Equipment Skills, the Balahara gear allows for swift sheathing (Quick Sheathe) and extended evasion (Evade Extender), enhancing the agility of your Hunter while navigating the battlefield.
As a player, I’ve found that although you can only reach level 1 with the previous gear, investing in the complete set will upgrade your Evade Extender to level 3. This significantly enhances your ability to dodge enemy attacks, making gameplay much smoother and more reliable.
Similarly, having at least three items equips you with the “Scaling Prowess” Group Skill, enhancing your ability to ride monsters and cause damage more efficiently.

Alloy
Although it doesn’t offer significant damage-per-second (DPS) increases, the Alloy gear offers robust defenses, is easy on resource usage during construction, and boasts two effective Equipment Skills that are beneficial across all weapon categories.
As a gamer, swiftly activating my “Speedy Sheath Level 2” allows for smooth escapes from foes and strategic repositioning. On the other hand, “Tremor Resistance,” a perk I unlock at the highest level 3 with the complete Alloy gear equipped, renders both minor and major earth tremors harmless.
It’s worth noting that for weapons like Gunlance, Hammer, or any others with slower attack speeds, the stability offered by Tremor Resistance should not be underestimated.
Ajarakan
Destroying monster limbs is an effective strategy for not only acquiring additional loot during a hunt, but also for shielding yourself from the monsters’ harmful limbs. The Ajarakan set offers the advantage of having max level Partbreaker, which provides both these benefits.
Similarly, reaching the highest level for Bombardier amplifies all explosive damage, whereas Blast Resistance offers significant protection against Blastblight. On the other hand, although Cliffhanger is at level 1, it aids in saving stamina when navigating through the environment.
Lastly, the Group Skill titled “Reinforced Hide” enhances your offensive and defensive capabilities whenever you get knocked down during a fight, boosting them up to double.
Rey Dau
Given its reputation as one of the most challenging targets for Low Rank, Rey Dau’s gear is exceptionally loaded with high-grade enhancements.
Or:
Due to its status as one of Low Rank’s hardest foes, Rey Dau’s equipment boasts a wealth of elite upgrades.
Or:
Being known as one of the toughest opponents in Low Rank, Rey Dau’s gear is packed full of premium boosts.
For Equipment Skills, at level 3, the Constitution skill significantly lowers the rate at which stamina is used during any action that consumes it. Simultaneously, level 3 Latent Power reduces stamina expenditure and momentarily enhances weapon compatibility.
Utilizing the Team Skill called “Inspiration” would be beneficial, as it boosts the damage output of your teammates uniformly when they employ items or melodies that impact others. This way, you’re ensuring a broad range of support and assistance for your team.
Guardian Rathalos
The Guardian Rathalos armor set boasts an array of incredibly potent enhancements. Notably, it includes the built-in abilities Wylk Burst and Scorcher as part of its Group Skill and Set Bonus respectively. However, what truly makes this set stand out is the access it provides to one of the Monster Hunter series’ top Damage Per Second (DPS) skills.
Wearing the complete Rathalos armor set will bestow upon you level 3 Weakness Exploit, enhancing your affinity significantly by 30% when striking weak points and an additional 20% on already wounded areas. These enhancements stack together, resulting in a massive total boost of 50%.
To ensure a smoother experience, the Intimidator at level 3 is designed to significantly reduce the occurrence of sneak attacks by smaller creatures when confronting Wilds’ larger beasts.
Xu Wu
For an immediate boost in damage per second, bypassing complex conditions or time-consuming setup processes, give the Xu Wu set’s two Equipment Skills a try.
Boosts your bond level every time an attack is executed when fully energized, keeping the advantage for several moments thereafter. Couple that with Stamina Rush, which significantly expedites energy restoration, and you’ll be benefiting from a substantial affinity boost over a long period, without any drawbacks.
Bone
By default, the Bone set comes at a remarkably low cost to create and boasts two exceptional advantages – Marathon Runner and Stun Resistance.
Using the Bone set significantly slows down stamina depletion, making it ideal for swift weapons such as Dual Blades and Longsword. On the other hand, it shortens the duration of stuns. If you’re tired of your combo sequences being interrupted, then the Bone set is perfect for you.
Best High Rank armor sets
After completing the Wilds’ campaign, similar to past Monster Hunter games, you’ll gain access to High Rank – a tougher challenge in the post-game content.
As risks escalate, so do the potential profits, offering resources essential for creating the High Rank Alpha and Beta gear sets. These sets offer distinct Equipment Skills that are significantly different from their Lower Rank equivalents, usually of superior quality and level.
A significant point to consider is that High Rank armor can be made stronger through additional enhancement using Decorations. Generally speaking, Alpha armors offer fewer or lower-quality Decoration slots compared to their Beta counterparts, but they have a greater number of Equipment Skills.
It’s a good idea to keep using Alpha armor sets until you can collect decent Decorations to improve your options with Beta armor sets, as this seems like the most effective strategy.
Rathalos Beta
For fans of Dual Blades, Longswords, or other swift weapons, it’s rare to encounter gear that surpasses the Rathalos set in terms of performance.
As a gamer, I’m all about that sweet adrenaline rush! When I nail a precise dodge, it temporarily supercharges my attacks. Plus, having lower stamina consumption with Constitution means I can dodge more often, creating even more opportunities for action. To top it off, Evade Window significantly increases the invincibility period during dodges, setting up a fantastic three-skill synergy that keeps me on my toes!
In this case, we opted for the Beta version since the Equipment Skill levels, although not as impressive as Alpha’s, are impressively advanced, providing ample opportunities for enhancements via Decorations.
Ajarakan Beta
As a fan, I’d say that Ajarakan Beta, much like its Low Rank version, keeps the crucial Equipment Skill, Partbreaker, but amps it up with an additional skill, Resentment. This new skill amplifies your attacks when you have damage that can be recuperated (the red section of your health meter). You can balance this offensive boost with defensive or regenerative Decorations, as well as Talismans.
If you enjoy strategies that balance risk and reward, Ajarakan Beta offers high damage output, but mastering its moves is crucial to dodge attacks that could eliminate you when your health is low, as you need to understand the enemy’s patterns.
Dober Alpha
The Dober set is highly recommended for weapons that require a lot of stamina, such as hammers and gunlances. At its maximum level, it offers reduced consumption in Constitution, increased recovery during Stamina Surge, and more lenient depletion rates during Marathon Runner – making resource management a non-issue anymore.
Gravios Alpha/Beta
For those wielding ranged weapons, Gravios’ abilities in Optimal Functioning and Quick Recovery are particularly advantageous because these skills capitalize on the safety features inherently provided by a distant combat range.
1. Option A: For your Hunter when completely healthy, it offers a significant boost in attack power. Meanwhile, it accelerates the rate at which health is restored when lost. Additionally, with Tremor Resistance and Flinch Free significantly minimizing interruptions, this could very well be the ultimate versatile set for Heavy Bowgun users.
2. Option B: When your Hunter is fully healed, it grants a powerful attack bonus. On the other hand, it expedites the process of regaining lost health. Moreover, Tremor Resistance and Flinch Free significantly decrease interruptions, making this possibly the ultimate all-round set for Heavy Bowgun users.
3. Option C: When your Hunter is at full health, it gives a substantial attack enhancement. Conversely, it hastens the rate of health regeneration when health is depleted. To top it off, Tremor Resistance and Flinch Free greatly diminish interruptions, making this potentially the ultimate versatile set for Heavy Bowgun users.
4. Option D: With your Hunter at full strength, it provides a substantial attack boost. At the same time, it expedites the recovery of lost health. Furthermore, Tremor Resistance and Flinch Free significantly cut down on interruptions, making this an excellent choice for Heavy Bowgun users seeking all-round effectiveness.
Choose the option that fits your preference in terms of style and flow.
Xu Wu Beta
In simple terms, Xu Wu Beta offers all the essential tools for hunters to persistently attack their target without any hindrance. The key offensive ability, Heroics, significantly enhances damage when the hero’s health is 35% or lower.
The extra damage from skillful dodging in Adrenaline Rush will accumulate, making Xu Wu an excellent choice for high-damage, low-defense builds. Furthermore, it offers level 2 Earplugs, a crucial defense mechanism against the deafening roars of monsters.
Balahara Alpha/Beta
Although these decorations won’t directly boost your DPS, they’re still valuable additions to consider if you’re a quick-weapon user in the High Rank Balahara set.
Having the abilities Evade Extender and Evade Window significantly enhances the consistency of dodging enemy attack patterns. Meanwhile, Stamina Surge‘s increased resource regeneration ensures there’s no time wasted. These skills work brilliantly with Balahara’s Master Mounter Group Skill, making you an indispensable team player during rodeo situations.
