Modern open-world games may seem ubiquitous now, and this is largely due to their expansive nature. Playing an open-world game on Steam could easily consume your leisure time for weeks, or even months. Exploring five different sandboxes could stretch your engagement with the genre to an entire year. The AAA industry tends to favor such releases, thus they receive a lot of focus.
Open-world games on Steam can eat up a lot of your time these days! If you dive into one, you might find yourself playing it for weeks, if not months. Jump between five open worlds, and you could be hooked for a full year! The big-budget gaming scene loves these types of games, so they get all the attention.
As a gaming enthusiast, I must admit that open-world games aren’t as prevalent as other genres out there. For instance, August 2025 doesn’t seem to have a blockbuster open-world title like Death Stranding 2 or Ghost of Yotei on the horizon. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Steam won’t see any notable releases in August. Instead, we might need to explore beyond the AAA sector to find some exciting games.
We’re exclusively focusing on Steam games marked as open-world in the store. Consequently, “Echoes of the End” was excluded because we couldn’t verify if it falls under that category. Similarly, “Mafia: The Old Country” no longer adheres to the open-world gameplay that the Mafia franchise is known for.
The RPG – Skyrim-Lite
August 7, 2025

Hey there! You know, not every open-world game needs to be all gritty and serious. Every once in a while, a lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek romp that playfully mocks the big guns of the genre can be a refreshing break from the usual. And that’s exactly what it looks like The RPG is aiming to offer when it drops in August 2025. Yes, the title might seem a bit on-the-nose, but it perfectly encapsulates the kind of fun and laughter Dionysus Acroreites is promising us!
The game is designed to be accessible for beginners, eliminating or streamlining features commonly found in both RPGs and open-world games, such as inventory management and survival mechanics. It boasts an art style similar to Supraland, offering a humorous and colorful atmosphere. While the visuals are impressive, they cater more towards fans of this particular style. The game includes exploration, clever dialogue, first-person combat, a carefully crafted dungeon, and intriguing hidden mysteries.
Out And About – Farming Life Sim
August 7, 2025

Nowadays, life can feel overwhelmingly tiring and annoying. However, at its finest, gaming offers an escape from such feelings, providing tranquility, fulfillment, and relaxation instead. For me, this is particularly true when I engage in over-the-top action games where I get to demolish everything, but everyone has their own tastes. If you’re drawn to exploring a comfortable open world, the game Out and About might be just what you need, as it looks incredibly appealing based on what’s been revealed so far.
Out and About has a demo on Steam, too!
In modern times, farming and life simulation games are quite prevalent, with a new engaging, character-rich, visually stunning, and musically lively game seeming to emerge every other week. The popularity of these games ensures their continuous production, and “Out and About” introduces some novel elements. For instance, the game serves an educational purpose by providing insights into topics such as plants and food recipes. As foraging is the primary activity in this game, you’ll have the opportunity to delve deep into a lush forest.
Altheia: The Wrath of Aferi – Zelda-Like
August 21, 2025

Showcasing strong influences from “Zelda” and Studio Ghibli, the game “Altheia: The Wrath of Aferi” appears extraordinary based on the previews, offering a unique blend of visually striking graphics, puzzle-solving, intense combat sequences, and dungeon exploration. The kingdom of Atarassia is under attack by the Void, resulting in monsters roaming the land. Lili initially has no inclination towards heroism, but she is eventually persuaded to follow in her mother’s footsteps as a Guardian by a monk named Said. Joining forces, they embark on a journey to defeat monsters, solve mind-bending puzzles, conquer dungeons, and save their world.
It’s worth noting that Altheia seems almost too perfect, which might lead to some skepticism. So, it could be beneficial to temper expectations slightly until we get a few more reviews. Nevertheless, Neon Doctrine and Game Seer Publishing have consistently delivered high-quality games, even though their focus is mainly on smaller indie-style releases and they don’t have many large-scale projects to their name yet.
The Knightling – Action-Adventure
August 28, 2025

Among the anticipated Steam open-world games slated for August, it seems that “The Knightling” is poised to shine as the top pick. This game derives its name from its central character, who embarks on a journey to uncover the fate of Sir Lionstone, who disappeared while on an adventure. The story unfolds across the four regions of Clesseia, offering combat that appears both imaginative and fluid, centered around a shield instead of a sword.
The Knightling (and the player) seem to advance primarily by improving their abilities rather than collecting loot. As they gain experience, they will become proficient with the shield. This skill development also plays a key role in navigation, as you’ll find yourself gliding through the world to reach places quicker. Twirlbound, although small compared to larger studios, showcased promising potential with their indie project Pine, despite some minor issues. With Saber Interactive on board as publishers, we can expect a more polished and superior game.
