Top Rebellion Heroes in Andor Who Sacrificed Everything

Summary

  • Behind the scenes, the Rebellion struggled to get started due to disagreements about taking down dictatorships.
  • Several key characters, like Bix, Maarva, and Carro, made significant sacrifices for the Rebellion‘s cause.
  • Mon Mothma gave up status, family, and everything for the Rebellion, becoming a pivotal leader on Yavin 4.

In “Star Wars: Episode 4 – A New Hope,” Luke found the Rebellion to appear as a highly organized counterpart to the Empire upon joining. However, unbeknownst to him, it had a turbulent beginning, largely due to the influence of Andor. Organizing any resistance movement inevitably involves debates on the best approach for overthrowing authoritarian regimes.

As a devoted film enthusiast, I’ve pondered deeply about the significant contributions each character made in the quest for the Rebellion’s triumph on Yavin 4. The road was arduous and fraught with hardship; some characters shed more blood, sweat, and tears than others. In light of the captivating series, Andor, along with the compelling film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, I find myself asking: Who among them made the greatest sacrifice for the Rebellion to bring about the Empire’s downfall?

Spoilers Ahead for Andor.

8. Bix Caleen

Motivating Cassian To Keep Going

  • Played By: Adria Arjona

In the first season of Andor, Bix found herself on the receiving end of hardships, as she underwent psychological torment at the hands of an Imperial physician named Gorst. Carrying the scars from that experience into season two, Bix’s determination to resist the Empire grew more potent than ever before.

Apart from a short, vengeance-driven mission, Bix’s most significant impact occurred during episode nine, when she chose to leave. She handed Cassian a note because she realized she was impeding him from aligning with the Rebellion. Her exit served as a pivotal moment in shaping one of the Rebellion’s most notable heroes.

7. Maarva Andor

Turning A Funeral Into A Rally

  • Played By: Fiona Shaw

Maarva served as a highly influential figure, extending beyond just an individual’s impact, with a special connection to Cassian. In the first season, she was Cassian’s adoptive mother who passed away. Despite being surrounded by Imperial spies right up until her final moments, she remained steadfast and refused to abandon Cassian.

Apart from persevering with the inhabitants of Ferrix, she refused to yield. In her final moments, she created a hologram message intended for her funeral. This message was an impassioned plea to resist the Empire, serving as a flame that rekindled hope within the hearts of the people. It served as proof that even the mighty Empire had its vulnerabilities, inspiring potential rebels.

6. Carro Rylanz

And The People Of Ghorman

  • Played By: Richard Sammel

As a follower of Carro, the resilient leader of the Ghorman resistance, I found myself at odds with Cassian’s strategy. The citizens of Ghorman were greenhorns in the ways of rebellion, and Cassian feared any uprising would cost us dearly. However, Carro and his people saw inaction as a crime in itself – standing still was not an option for us.

It’s accurate to say that Cassian was correct when he pointed out that the Empire had completely conquered Ghorman, leading to the massacre of its inhabitants in a horrific act of genocide. This atrocity would be unacceptable not only to the people of Ghorman but also to many others across the galaxy. This widespread disapproval served as a catalyst, fostering the belief that the Rebellion was essential, lest another tragedy like the one on Ghorman recur.

5. Kleya Marki

Carrying On Luthen’s Message

  • Played By: Elizabeth Dulau

Kleya served as Luthen’s aid, functioning in a way that could be likened to a daughter, and was part of the Rebellion. Although she followed Luthen’s instructions, Kleya also harbored her own thoughts. She was instrumental in intercepting messages on behalf of the Rebellion and occasionally undertook peculiar tasks assigned by Luthen as well.

The highlight of her journey occurred in episode ten of season two, where scenes alternated between her sneaking into an Imperial hospital and memories from when she initially encountered Luthen as a child. By executing this mission successfully, she managed to protect Luthen from being interrogated by the Empire and passed crucial details about the Death Star onto Cassian and the Rebels.

4. Vel Sartha

A Heist Done Right

  • Played By: Faye Marsay

In the initial season of ‘Andor’, Vel played a pivotal role by masterminding a daring heist. This operation, resulting in casualties and wounds, ultimately provided her with the funds essential for supporting further rebellion activities.

In season two, her part was somewhat diminished, yet she stepped up to replace Cassian on Ghorman. Despite her best efforts to train them, a failed heist resulted in the loss of Vel’s beloved, Cinta. This tragedy cost her not only her love but also her standing on Coruscant as she chose to become a Rebel.

3. Mon Mothma

Leaving Behind Status And Family

  • Played By: Genevieve O’Reilly

On Coruscant, Mon Mothma, unlike others, held the title of Senator. In the first season, she played a crucial role by secretly providing funds for the Rebellion, while Bail Organa, Leia’s foster father, operated in the shadows. However, when it came to making a decision, Mon Mothma prioritized honesty over her own safety.

In an impassioned address before the Senate, Mon Mothma publicly criticized Emperor Palpatine, which promptly led soldiers to pursue her. Fortunately, Cassian intervened, ensuring her safety, transforming her into the leader of the Rebels on Yavin 4. She made tremendous sacrifices for the Rebellion – relinquishing her Senate post, estranging herself from her family and leaving behind a daughter and husband.

Mon Mothma boldly denounced Emperor Palpatine in a passionate speech within the Senate chambers, causing guards to swiftly move towards her. However, Cassian stepped in, safeguarding her, thus enabling her to rise as the leader of the Rebels at Yavin 4. She forsook everything for the Rebellion – relinquishing her political position, abandoning her family, including a daughter and spouse.

2. Luthen Rael

Selling His Soul For The Cause

  • Played By: Stellan Skarsgard

The main point is: What sacrifices or concessions did Luthen make to resist The Empire? Although his past remains somewhat unclear at the end of season two of ‘Andor’, it’s clear that he took some extreme measures to reach his current position.

Cassian frequently clashed with Luthen, along with other freedom fighters, yet it was ultimately Luthen who saved their lives during the Rebellion. Despite overstepping boundaries on occasion, if not for him, the Rebellion would have remained a concept rather than an operational group. In essence, he sacrificed himself for the movement.

1. Cassian Andor

Setting Up A New Hope

  • Played By: Diego Luna

Cassian’s superior rank over Luthen is primarily due to his significant role in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” Alongside characters such as Ruescott Melshi, K-2SO, and Jyn Erso, Cassian played a crucial part in obtaining the Death Star plans. Tragically, they all perished during this mission. The Rebellion later handed over these plans to Luke Skywalker, who ultimately destroyed the Death Star in “Star Wars: Episode 4 – A New Hope.

In addition to his role in the heist mentioned earlier, Cassian played a significant part in the series “Andor“. He worked alongside Vel on that mission, participated in rebellion activities on Ferrix, and assisted Luthen in numerous other missions. The show “Andor” appears to emphasize just how crucial Cassian was, and now viewers can confirm this.
