- Resident Evil 2’s 2019 version is a terrifying and thrilling experience with intense encounters, well-known characters, and scary locations.
For several decades, the Resident Evil universe has captivated countless fans with its chilling games, grotesque creatures, and recurring characters that are a staple of the series. Long after its initial release, there might still be fresh fans eager to explore the survival horror genre; however, it’s crucial they carefully consider where to dive in.
Despite being nearly three decades old, some modern gamers may find the controls and graphics of the initial Resident Evil game less appealing due to its age. However, newer titles might not fully capture the essence of the series. Therefore, it is recommended that new fans explore these older games to gain a genuine understanding and appreciation for the Resident Evil series.
1. Resident Evil Remake
The Newer Version of the Original Game is the Quintessential Resident Evil Experience
Among the countless games that have undergone multiple makeovers, the original “Resident Evil” has been updated, boasting enhanced graphics, fresh content, and optimized for modern hardware to let novice gamers experience the thrill of a timeless survival horror masterpiece.
In the game, players take on the roles of Jill or Chris, who are compelled to seek refuge inside a baffling mansion following a horde of rabid dogs. However, they soon discover that the shelter they found might be just as perilous. This modern rendition offers an immersive way to enjoy the initial installment and serves as an excellent entry point into the franchise, given its reputation for being one of the scariest games in the series. It also introduces pivotal characters like Jill, Chris, and notorious antagonist Albert Wesker.
2. Resident Evil 5
A Surprisingly Fun Co-Op Experience
Many longtime Resident Evil fans might wrinkle their noses at even hearing about Resident Evil 5, and that’s not entirely unjustified. It’s not the top-tier game in the series, and it was certainly impacted by the surge of action movies during its time. However, if one can overlook its shortcomings and find a friend to join in, they’ll discover a robust, enjoyable cooperative shooter game.
In the sequel to the initial game, Chris returns with a mission to capture Irving, who intends to illegally sell Bioterrorist Weapons (BOWs). Accompanied by local ally Sheva, they soon discover a much larger plot, one that entangles the most iconic villain – Wesker. Resident Evil 5 showcases Wesker at his finest, donning a stylish ensemble, sunglasses, and an attitude that’s hard to resist. Fans should definitely try out Resident Evil 5 for the chance to witness Wesker’s memorable final performance.
3. Resident Evil 2
The 2019 Version Is As Terrifying As It Is Excellent
Over the past few years, I’ve been blown away by Capcom’s dedication to updating classic titles using their latest engine, making them more appealing for today’s gamers. While some hardcore fans may argue that the original versions have a certain charm, it’s hard to deny that these remakes are nothing short of triumphs, enhancing almost every aspect of the gameplay. Resident Evil 2, in particular, has been one of the biggest hits.
In 2019’s “Resident Evil 2”, Claire, Leon, RPD, Mr. X, and a horde of monsters that would make anyone shudder at the sight of a T-Virus sample, Claire, Leon, RPD, Mr. X, and more monsters than one can count – this game combines horror and action. The settings and the inhabitants of these areas are frightening beyond belief, but the gameplay is enjoyable and reactive, with some challenging boss battles to conquer, including Birkin and Mr. X himself.
4. Resident Evil 3
Experience Jill’s Raccoon City Trial
It seems that the remake of Resident Evil 3 may not be making many “Top Ten Resident Evil” lists among those who played the original game, but it’s not necessarily a game to dismiss outright, particularly for newcomers to the series. The remake is easier to obtain and play compared to the original, offering a more approachable experience. As players gain confidence and manage to find a copy of the original, they can always revisit it.
As a gamer diving into Resident Evil 3, I appreciate the updated gameplay that’s more action-oriented than the old-school tank control shooters from yesteryear. It’s great for newcomers like myself to jump right in and catch up with Jill since the mansion incident, following her story as Raccoon City crumbles around her.
5. Resident Evil 7
One Of RE’s Most Frightening Entries Is A Must-Play
In the Resident Evil series, players are led to a variety of intriguing locations – from Raccoon City to a secluded Spanish village, all the way to the swamps of Louisiana in Resident Evil 7. Here, the protagonist Ethan embarks on a journey, seeking his missing wife Mia who has been held captive by the twisted Baker family for three years now. This family has been influenced by Eveline’s powers, leading them down a dark path away from humanity.
Resident Evil 7” was highly acclaimed upon its release, as it signified the franchise’s return to the survival horror genre, which it’s renowned for. Filled with suspenseful, eerie vibes and drenched in southern gothic terror, this game is a must-play for any fan of Resident Evil, regardless of whether they’re longtime supporters or newcomers. The character Ethan Winters serves as an engaging protagonist, as he finds himself in over his head, making him immediately relatable. Each encounter with the Baker family is uniquely chilling.
6. Resident Evil Village
Finishing Ethan’s Story
After wrapping up Resident Evil 7, it’s only natural to move on to Resident Evil Village next, as it serves as a direct follow-up. Following the events, Ethan attempts to establish a peaceful life in Romania. However, just when he thinks things are settling down, another family member, his baby daughter Rosemary, is abducted. In pursuit of her captors, Ethan stumbles upon a picturesque but isolated snow-covered village that hides under the shadows of the lycans and the Four Lords, each holding a crucial piece of his child’s whereabouts.
In the same vein as its previous installment, fans who appreciated 7 are likely to enjoy Villiance, given that it offers more of Ethan, first-person gameplay, and novel monsters, along with a distinct objective. Each of the Four Lords presents a unique gaming experience: Beneviento’s house filled with illusions, and Lady Dimitrescu’s relentless chase of Ethan through her castle. Consequently, this game caters to a wide range of horror enthusiasts.
7. Resident Evil 4
A More Action-Packed Game That Doesn’t Foresake Its Roots Completely
For quite some time, Resident Evil 4 was widely acknowledged as the best game within the series. It was filled with cheesy action, had a fantastic portrayal of Leon’s character, and was generally a fun, light-hearted game. However, in 2023, a remake was launched, causing many gamers to switch from the original version to this sleek, updated edition. The remake showcased numerous enhancements, with improved character development, a more somber atmosphere, and smoother gameplay that wasn’t slowed down by age.
As a passionate fan myself, I can confidently say that diving into Resident Evil 4 is an effortless introduction for newcomers to the series. This masterpiece is conveniently found on current-generation consoles and PCs, making it easily accessible. The game’s events are skillfully narrated by Leon Kennedy, keeping players up-to-date with the storyline. To truly savor the essence of Resident Evil 4, this is undoubtedly the way to go! You’ll witness Leon at his finest, a tad weary but not overly edgy, and of course, hear his legendary “bingo” line echo through the game.
