Adventures and their distinctive characters play a crucial role in every great Role-Playing Game (RPG), and they can significantly influence the overall enjoyment. Fortunately, Bethesda games have consistently offered numerous one-of-a-kind experiences within their acclaimed Elder Scrolls franchise.
Of course, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, released back in 2006, wasn’t any ordinary game – it may have showcased some of the series’ finest moments when it comes to side activities. And with its recently remastered version proving successful in updating this classic RPG for today, there’s never been a better moment to delve into each of its stunningly renovated cities and uncover their most captivating side quests.
1. Anvil – Where Spirits Have Lease
Ghosts of The Gold Coast
- Starting the Quest: Speak with Velwyn Benirus at The Count’s Arms in Anvil, and purchase Benirus Manor for 5000 gold
In the quaint coastal town of Anvil, players have the opportunity to blend house hunting and spirit exorcising through the side mission titled “Where Spirits Rent.” At the local tavern, you can talk to Velwyn Benirus who appears quite anxious about selling his deceased grandfather’s estate, Benirus Manor, for 5000 gold.
Although the cost for this manor might not seem high given its lavish appearance, it’s actually quite a bargain – perhaps even below market value in the Gold Coast. However, it won’t take long for you to understand why the price may have been reduced. The reason is that, during your stay, you’ll encounter some rather unfriendly spirits. It’s no surprise Velwyn was eager to sell, as it seems this long-abandoned manor has been cursed. So begins the quest to hopefully lift the curse and remove any supernatural disturbances from the property.
2. Bravil – The Forlorn Watchman
The Ethereal Sailor Of Niben Bay
- Starting the Quest: Speak with Gilgondorin at Silverhome on the Water in Bravil
If you’re intrigued by ghost-hunting and hear whispers of a spectral sailor in Bravil, it might be worth your time to look into it! Swing by the city’s local tavern and have a chat with its proprietor, Gilgondorin, a High Elf who could potentially share some valuable insights on this spooky tale.
After inquiring from Gilgondorin about the city’s rumor concerning a ghostly figure, he discloses that this spectral entity typically manifests at Bawnwatch Camp once night falls. Upon further examination, it is indeed verified that the innkeeper was speaking truthfully. Subsequently, additional exploration ensues along the Panther River in search of the sailor’s wreckage, with the hope that uncovering the mystery will put an end to the bay’s supernatural disturbances.
3. Bruma – A Brotherhood Betrayed
Hunting The Hunter
- Starting the Quest: Speak with Carius Runellius at Bradon Lirrian’s House in Bruma
In the game, Bruma to the north and its nearby regions hold crucial importance for the primary storyline, yet they’re brimming with entertaining side activities too – one example being “A Brotherhood Betrayed.” This time though, instead of tracking down ghosts, players will be on the hunt for vampires, although it’s more like a twist as they won’t exactly be traditional blood-sucking creatures.
Overhear conversations among Bruma’s inhabitants to learn of whispers about a self-styled vampire slayer named Raynil Dralas, who has been accused of meting out “vigilante punishment” against Bradon Lirrian, a suspected vampire residing in the city. An inquiry is launched in an attempt to unravel the truth behind Bradon’s vampirism and Raynil’s swift (and arguably unlawful) actions.
4. Cheydinhal – A Brush With Death
A Journey To The Painted World
- Starting the Quest: Speak with Tivela at Rythe Lythandas’s House in Cheydinhal
Cheydinhal is recognized as a thriving metropolis, adorned with spacious mansions and carefully maintained greenery. Despite the presence of its wealthy elite and opulent weekend gatherings, similar to other significant cities in Cyrodiil, it retains its share of enigmas, such as the recent “Close Call” incident involving a local resident.
Casually overhear conversations around town, and you’ll learn about Rythe Lythandas, the renowned artist who has mysteriously vanished. When chatting with the painter’s spouse, she hints at the fact that the artist frequently isolated himself in his studio for extended periods. Upon further examination, it is discovered that this unfortunate soul was inadvertently pulled into one of his artworks and requires assistance to recover his enchanted paintbrush and extricate himself from The Painted World.
5. Chorrol – Separated At Birth
Reunited At Last
- Starting the Quest: Speak with Reynald Jemane at The Grey Mare in Chorrol
In the game Oblivion, Chorrol is a vital region significant to the primary quest, and Weynon Priory lies beyond its boundaries. Just as in other urban areas within the game, you’ll find numerous whispers and gossips circulating, which are worth looking into.
The buzz around town is that Reynald Jemane has been behaving unusually in Cheydinhal occasionally. Here’s the catch: Jemane is usually found deep in drink at the local tavern in Chorrol, seldom venturing out. Could it be Reynald? Perhaps a disguised stand-in? The only way to uncover the truth about Reynald’s peculiar actions and appearances is by visiting Cheydinhal, which will shed light on the mystery surrounding his abnormal behavior.
6. Imperial City – An Unexpected Voyage
Pirates Of Topal Bay
- Starting the Quest: Rent a room and stay the night at The Bloated Float, located in the Imperial City Waterfront District
As both the biggest city in the game and the capital of the region, the Imperial City is brimming with fantastic main missions and additional activities. Among these, the most enjoyable ones are primarily located in the lively district around the city’s busy port.
At the Waterfront District’s harbor in the capital city, you’ll find The Bloated Float, a comfy inn nestled on a moored vessel. Spend a night here, and you’ll awaken to discover your hotel has set sail on the boundless ocean! However, it’s not quite the leisurely cruise one might expect. In an unexpected twist, The Bloated Float has been commandeered by a notorious gang called the Blackwater Brigands, who are after treasure hidden onboard. Now, it’s up to players to devise a plan to vanquish these pirates and return the floating inn to its original safe haven.
7. Leyawiin – Mazoga The Orc
Stolen Valor, Elder Scrolls Edition
- Starting the Quest: Speak with Count Marius Caro at Castle Leyawiin
In the game “Oblivion,” Leyawiin is typically not as well-visited as some other cities due to its location in the southernmost part of Blackwood, which lies far from the province’s center. However, nestled by the Niben River and filled with swamps, it offers a distinctive atmosphere and captivating quests that make it worth exploring.
There’s been a lot of talk around town about Mazoga the Orc, often spotted wandering the Castle. She claims to have been a kind of noble knight in her past, but given that she doesn’t provide much evidence for this claim, people are skeptical and are now delving deeper into her history to find out if her tales of heroic knightly service are true or not.
8. Skingrad – Paranoia
Conspiracy Theories Of Skingrad
- Starting the Quest: After being spoken to by Glarthir, meet him behind The Great Chapel of Julianos at midnight in Skingrad
The aristocratic town of Skingrad is celebrated throughout the region of Cyrodiil for its exquisite wines, which are produced abundantly in vineyards surrounding the settlement. Its residents, often affluent, tend to be hospitable towards visitors, although their hospitality can sometimes be elusive.
Roam through different parts of the city, and you might encounter an Elf named Glarthir who’s a bit woodsy in appearance. He may ask you to meet him behind the Grand Chapel of Julianos at midnight, offering few details about why. If you decide to meet this suspicious fellow, he’ll share his concern that his neighbor is watching him. The quest’s title hints that Glarthir might be overly cautious, or even a bit of a conspiracy enthusiast. However, looking into the alleged stalker could be the key to uncovering the truth about his suspicions.
