In the fifth episode of season 2, we finally get a glimpse into Khun Aguero’s activities over the past six years since Bam’s apparent demise, as depicted in Tower of God. The twist that leaves viewers stunned is discovering his present bond with Rachel, whom he has been nurturing ever since the news of Bam’s fate became public knowledge.

At first glance, Rachel seems friendly towards Khun Aguero Agnes, but the truth is, there is far from good feelings or kindness shared between them.

A New Challenger Is Introduced To The Fans

Introducing Dan

Tower of God Season 2 Episode 5: Khun Aguero Returns

Khun attempts to persuade the swiftest resident on the 25th floor of the tower to join his crew. This individual, Edin Dan, is not only incredibly fast but also has extensive knowledge about Shinheuh, or “Divine Sea Creatures.” He’s the only one who can catch a rare Silver Fish. Despite his renown and numerous Regulars eager to recruit him as a Scout, he hesitates due to his disinterest in the violence associated with tests. However, Aguero is undeterred by Dan’s personal reservations and urgently wants him on his team. Upon learning this, Dan tries to decline, but Aguero offers a large quantity of Suspendium, a cobalt-colored rock that allows Lighthouses to float.

In the restaurant where their meeting took place, Aguero reveals that everyone present was secretly on his payroll and instructed not to let Dan leave. If Dan could slip away undetected, Khun would abandon the idea of recruiting him. However, Dan remains unfazed as he snatches the Suspendium and employs a speed reminiscent of The Flash to make a hasty exit. Unfortunately, the animation during these fast-paced scenes appeared slow and unconvincing. As Dan neared the exit, he found himself outmaneuvered: Khun had only paid off the bartender, who sneakily used a tranquilizer gun to subdue Dan instead.

Khun Aguero’s Team

Who’s Who In The Zoo?

Tower of God Season 2 Episode 5: Khun Aguero Returns

As I’m hauled to Khun’s operational hideout, I’m introduced to Khun’s crew for the first time. When I regain consciousness, I find myself under the scrutiny of a towering figure who introduces himself not once, but twice as Novick – a Spear Bearer. It dawns on me that I’ve been bested in this game, and now I’m part of the team. I ask Novick why Khun is so adamant about scaling the tower, and that’s when he enlightens me: Aguero has forged a special bond with Rachel, one where she seeks his aid for all sorts of help. He looks after her, consoles her during her tormenting nightmares of Bam’s cries from the abyss. I mistakenly assume this bond to be romantic in nature; however, Novick advises me against that assumption or discussing their relationship. Rachel has skillfully preserved elements of her deception and can shed tears like a crocodile to convince everyone of her genuine fear stemming from the past events.

Rachel Shameless Parasite (special position)

In another location, Dan meets the rest of the team and a power-ranking system is set up; however, only Ran and Novick seem keen, resulting in an amusing comparison to Yamcha’s awkward demise during the Saiyan Saga of Dragon Ball Z when Dan attempts to defy them. A rivalry between Novick and Ran arises due to the latter’s ambition to defeat the former in battle. This interaction was brief and lacked depth, failing to convey their fighting abilities effectively. As the team works to determine its new order, Aguero comforts Rachel, hinting at a potential bond between them, but as soon as he departs, her true nature emerges. After the encounter, Aguero distances himself from her, implying that she killed Bam. Meanwhile, Khun’s Lighthouse watched her from afar while she was preening in her room.

The Flashback

Khun Has Known The Truth All Along

Tower of God Season 2 Episode 5: Khun Aguero Returns

The episode intertwines scenes from the past with the current events, and a conversation between Khun and Shibisu takes us back to shortly after Bam’s demise, when Khun had confided in Shibisu about Rachel’s secret. Medical professionals claimed that the injury causing her paralysis was impossible under the circumstances, leading Khun to suspect her dishonesty. Furthermore, Yu Han Sung, who oversees the tests on the second floor, knew about Rachel’s condition, suggesting a deeper mystery. To safeguard their team bonded by Bam’s fate, Khun decided to take on the responsibility of ascending the tower with Rachel and bearing suspicion for her role in Bam’s death. As a result, Khun and Shibisu went their separate ways, with Khun forming a new alliance with Rachel while Shibisu led Bam’s other companions in a different group.

At dusk, Khun gathers his group and shares that they will ascend the Tower within a month, emphasizing his ambition to assume leadership of the Khun family. He offers that if he achieves this goal, he’ll grant any wish his teammates might have. In return, they must safeguard Rachel, feigning friendship towards her while avoiding forming genuine feelings for her. They should be prepared to leave her behind at a moment’s notice and capable of disregarding her cries if necessary. Khun’s demeanor around Rachel is entirely false, concealing six years of deep-seated animosity. The scene then unfolds with Rachel cackling hysterically.

Viole’s Grace

A Not-So-Bad Guy

Tower of God Season 2 Episode 5: Khun Aguero Returns

In the concluding moments of the episode, I find myself reunited with Ja Wangnan and the gang. The dynamic between Prince and Miseng is amicable, whereas Yihwa harbors an unusual fixation on Viole, stemming from suspicion and apprehension. Interestingly enough, we now share a roof under a building Viole graciously rented, and he surprises me with his eagerness to help out around the house – even taking turns in the kitchen and doing chores. Unfortunately, Yihwa’s culinary skills leave much to be desired as her uncontrollable flames often result in food getting burnt beyond recognition. Her curiosity gets the better of her when she learns that Viole has left, prompting her to follow him. However, her pursuit leads her to an ominous encounter with a towering figure impersonating Jue Viole Grace and menacingly threatening Hwaryun.

The real Jue Viole stands up and knocks out the imposter before Hwaryun brings his attention to Yihwa, whose face registers some level of disappointment. Tower of God season 2 episode 5 was immensely significant to the plot as it finally showed some of the cast from the first season, and it is likely that the two casts will cross paths very soon. From a visual standpoint, the animation was rather disappointing, and the flashes of quality in the first episode haven’t quite translated over the subsequent episodes. Despite there being some great background art breathing life into the series, the effects and combat leave much to be desired.
