After a year-long wait, John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando is now available. This is the third video game project for the famous horror director, who contributed to the game’s story.
Toxic Commando is a fast-paced, team-based shooter in the style of Left 4 Dead. Players control a group of mercenaries – Walter, Cato, Ruby, and Astrid – as they fight through hordes of zombies. Their mission is to help a scientist named Leon Dorsey stop a zombie outbreak and destroy the source of the infection, a powerful entity known as the Sludge God.
Okay, so at first the Toxic Commandos weren’t exactly thrilled to help me, Dorsey. But eventually, they agreed, and we jumped into the first real mission: Church of the Damned. Basically, we had to sneak into this old, abandoned church – St. Godard’s – to grab some reactant fuel. It sounded easy enough, but you never know with these things!
You can play this mission on any difficulty setting, but there’s a challenging achievement called “Hold the Door!” that some players might find difficult to unlock.
Preparing to Hold the Door
Very few players have unlocked the ‘Hold the Door!’ trophy, and that’s not surprising. The game Toxic Commando just came out, and the trophy is also challenging to get if you aren’t ready for it.
You can play The Church of the Damned mission on any difficulty – Story, Normal, Hard, or Very Hard. However, I suggest playing on Normal for a good balance and to avoid making it too difficult.
You can play this mission by yourself or with up to four players online. While playing with others can make earning the trophy simpler, it’s still achievable solo if you know what materials and weapons to get.
If you’re playing this mission alone, I suggest choosing either the Medic or the Strike Dealer class. The Strike Dealer can quickly eliminate zombies, and the Medic can heal themselves and others consistently, which is useful because med kits are scarce.
For weapons, it’s best to stick with SMGs or assault rifles, and pair them with the automatic Geist 17 pistol. These are more effective at handling groups of enemies than standard pistols or shotguns.
As soon as the mission starts, players should open their map and pinpoint locations with Spare Parts. These parts are very useful later on, letting players and their team unlock crates containing strong weapons like grenade launchers and railguns.
During your journey, it’s a good idea to restock supplies and use a vehicle with a winch, like a Maverick truck. Winches are helpful for getting into locked areas and can also pull your vehicle out if it gets stuck in mud.
How to Defend St. Godard’s Church
Once players restore power to a couple of generators near Dorsey, they can enter St. Godard’s Church and encounter a small group of survivors, led by a woman named Gallagher.
Gallagher is refusing to let the Toxic Commandos inside until they can successfully defend against an approaching group of zombies. They’ll have a short time to get ready before signaling Gallagher when they’ve held off the horde.
Spare Parts are useful because they let you fix defenses around the church, including two turrets, a mortar, two electric traps, an electric fence, and a bait trap. These repairs will help you protect against the approaching zombies.

Once you knock on the church door, zombies will attack in three waves. It’s best to start by using the turrets to take them down, but switch things up when tougher zombies like the Goon (similar to a Charger) or the Stalker (like a Spitter) appear – that’s when the mortar will be really useful.
These defenses will slow down the zombies, but the mortar doesn’t have endless ammunition. Players will eventually need to rely on their own weapons to finish them off.
When you run out of mortar ammo or your turrets overheat, the Thumper and Hailstorm grenade launchers, along with the MAG machine gun, are the most effective weapons for defending against large groups of zombies.
Okay, so eventually, Gallagher gets this awesome ability to send out a shockwave that just destroys all the zombies left, and that finishes the mission! If we can actually hold the church and keep everything from falling apart, we finally unlock the ‘Hold the Door!’ achievement – it’s been a tough one, but so satisfying when you get it!
