Toyotarou’s Dragon Ball Super Manga Gets a Disappointing Update in V-Jump

2026 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Dragon Ball Super fans! The anime is returning with not one, but two new series. Dragon Ball Super: Beerus will be a complete remake of the original Dragon Ball Super anime, starting this fall. Meanwhile, Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol is being made, based on the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga from the manga. This means anime viewers will get new content before manga readers.

The latest issue of V-Jump magazine confirms that Toyotarou’s Dragon Ball Super manga is still paused, and there’s no news on when it will continue. The manga has been on break since February 2025, after Chapter 104 was released. Fans eager to see the Black Frieza Saga have been waiting for over a year, but it seems Toyotarou isn’t planning a return to the series in the near future.

V-Jump Confirms Toyotarou’s Dragon Ball Super Manga is Still on an Indefinite Hiatus

While the Dragon Ball Super anime has made a successful return, the manga isn’t sharing in that popularity. A recent announcement in V-Jump magazine quietly confirmed that the Dragon Ball Super manga has been on pause for a year, and will remain so. Given the anime’s recent relaunch, many expected the manga to resume around the same time, but that doesn’t seem to be happening.

Many fans are growing frustrated by the continued absence of Toyotarou. The Dragon Ball Super manga paused after Akira Toriyama’s passing, and only a chapter he’d already completed was released. With Toyotarou having done little beyond some teasers for the Black Frieza Saga, now would be a good time for the manga to resume. It’s unclear why the series has remained on hold for so long.

The Black Frieza Saga Isn’t Happening Anytime Soon

The next story arc for the Dragon Ball Super manga will focus on Black Frieza. This storyline was hinted at before the manga started adapting the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie for a year and a half. The events of the series are now closer to the end of Dragon Ball Z than ever before, meaning Goku and the Z-Fighters will soon confront Frieza. This will likely happen before Goku leaves to train Uub and compete in the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament.

Unfortunately, since the Dragon Ball Super manga is currently paused, it doesn’t look like the Black Frieza Saga will happen anytime soon, and definitely not in 2026. Some fans were hoping the artist, Toyotarou, was secretly working on the story ahead of the manga’s return, but that’s just a guess. Right now, it seems more likely we’ll see the Black Frieza Saga in the Dragon Ball Super anime, potentially five years from now.

The Dragon Ball Super Anime Feels Like the Franchise’s Only Shot at a Future

While the Dragon Ball Super manga is currently on break, the fact that V-Jump continues to mention this is a positive sign – it suggests the series isn’t canceled. However, things don’t look promising for Toyotarou, the manga artist. He wasn’t credited for Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, and the Dragon Ball Genkidamatsuri event completely overlooked his work, focusing only on the anime and treating the manga simply as source material.

Currently, the two new Dragon Ball Super anime series seem like the best hope for the future of the franchise. The manga has been paused for a considerable time, and the delay in new chapters from Toyotarou means it will take longer to animate the Black Frieza Saga. It’s likely we’re heading towards a situation where the Dragon Ball Super anime and manga will progress simultaneously, both adapting the same story arc based on ideas from Toriyama.
