The Heartbreaking Backstory of South of Midnight’s Benjy Tree Explained

A Boy And His Brother

Around two or three decades prior to the events depicted in “South of Midnight”, Rhubarb resided with his younger sibling, Benjy. Unlike many children, Benjy was more inclined to inhabit his own realm and was constantly tormented for it. In an effort to shield Benjy from further harm and create a brighter future for them both, Rhubarb moved himself and Benjy to a different town.

Initially, everything seemed normal. However, Benjy’s distant behavior didn’t go unnoticed for long, sparking town gossip. Not too soon after, Benjy found himself the focus of schoolyard harassment once again. The bullying escalated from name-calling to menacing gestures and eventually violent attacks, with one instance resulting in Benjy being pelted so forcefully that it inadvertently killed a nearby rabbit.

Unlike creatures such as Two-Tood Tom and Rougarou, whose roots can be clearly linked to particular folklore, the origin story of the Benjy Tree isn’t straightforwardly traced. However, wood spirits are present in various mythologies around the world.

Jealousy Takes Its Toll

Rhubarb held a strong affection for his brother, always doing his best to shield him. Over time, Rhubarb essentially took on the roles of both carer and protector for Benjy, which gradually affected his own self-esteem. With most of his time dedicated to looking after Benjy, Rhubarb found it difficult to consider his personal needs and aspirations.

One day, our town’s mayor threw a talent show, and I, Rhubarb, saw it as an unmissable opportunity to share my unique self and break free from my bro’s shadow. In the heat of my musical performance, my brother Benjy barged onto the stage, leaping to celebrate my victory.

Instead of regarding it as a testament to his talent, Rhubarb perceived it as the ultimate breaking point, his brother’s act of kindness inexplicably shattering his remaining sense of self-worth and joy. Overwhelmed by anger, Rhubarb attacked his brother publicly. Guiding his brother towards the woods near town, Rhubarb eventually brought him to a hollow tree. Pretending it was a game, Rhubarb coaxed Benjy into climbing inside the tree.

This version aims to simplify and clarify the original sentence while maintaining its essence and flow.

Inside the tree, Rhubarb fastened wooden planks onto the trunk, effectively sealing off the sole entry and exit. Once satisfied that it was secure, Rhubarb departed, abandoning his brother to a grim fate. It wasn’t until some time passed that Benjy understood it wasn’t a joke, but when he grasped his brother’s malevolent intentions, he couldn’t stop crying. Tragically, Benjy’s life ended within the tree, and his spirit bonded mystically with it, giving birth to the Benjy Tree.
