Transformers: Reactivate Canceled by Splash Damage

Summary

  • Transformers: Reactivate has been canceled after a lengthy and troubled development period.
  • Some staff members at Splash Damage may be let go as a result.
  • The studio is now working on an open-world survival game being built with Unreal Engine 5.

Unfortunately, it’s been announced that the development of “Transformers: Reactivate” has been halted by Splash Damage. During The Game Awards 2022, Transformers fans were intrigued by a mysterious trailer for this title, which was a 1-4 player online game where Autobots and Decepticons united to combat an extraterrestrial threat on Earth. Known for their work on multiplayer aspects of hits like “Gears 5” and “Batman: Arkham Origins”, many were eager to see Splash Damage’s take on the iconic Transformers franchise.

Despite numerous years passing since the initial announcement, there hasn’t been much information disclosed about Transformers: Reactivate, beyond a few leaks and early action figure releases. Based on these leaks, Transformers: Reactivate was expected to showcase a Generation 1 roster of playable characters such as Ironhide, Hot Rod, Starscream, Soundwave, with the toys offering sneak peeks at Optimus Prime and Bumblebee. Another theory suggested that Beast Wars characters would also be included, but it now appears that these plans have been abandoned altogether.

Splash Damage has shared that they’ve decided to terminate the production of Transformers: Reactivate, following a challenging and prolonged development phase. In a statement posted on their Twitter account, the team expressed that this difficult choice might lead to some staff redundancies as they redirect their efforts towards other projects.

Splash Damage Cancels Transformers: Reactivate After Nearly Three Years

In their announcement for the cancellation of “Transformers: Reactivate”, Splash Damage acknowledged and expressed gratitude towards the team who worked tirelessly on the unpublished game, as well as to Hasbro for their backing during the project’s development. The response to the news about “Transformers: Reactivation” has been varied, with some fans expressing sadness that it won’t be released while others had anticipated its cancellation due to the silence from Splash Damage since the TGA 2022 trailer was first unveiled.

In March 2023, Splash Damage revealed that they were collaborating with streamers Shroud and Sacriel on “Project Astrid,” a triple-A open-world survival game developed using Unreal Engine 5. With the halt of “Transformers: Reactivate” production, it appears that Splash Damage will reallocate their resources towards “Project Astrid.” However, this shift may result in staff reductions within the former project’s team due to its cancellation. In the meantime, Transformers enthusiasts are left anticipating a new triple-A adventure starring Hasbro’s renowned Robots in Disguise.
