On the ‘Nothing Left Unsaid’ podcast, Nic Pizzolatto, creator of True Detective, mentioned that he has an idea for another story involving Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey’s characters, Rust Cohle and Martin Hart. He expressed hope that this idea could come to fruition in the future. During discussions with both actors, Pizzolatto discovered they were open to reprising their roles for more True Detective episodes. However, at present, the concept remains in Pizzolatto’s mind as he hasn’t begun writing, and there has been no official announcement. Nevertheless, if both actors are interested in returning to their characters, this could be an exciting development for future True Detective seasons.

I haven’t put anything down on paper yet, but ideas have been swirling in my mind. We’ve discussed revisiting and working on something together. It seems like the others might be open to it, though it remains uncertain whether we’ll actually move forward with this idea or not.

Last year, Francesca Orsi, HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film, announced that we can expect season 5, following the successful fourth run. The casting process for this season is set to start sometime this year, with filming scheduled to begin in New York City within the next few months. If all goes as planned, we might get to watch it premiere in 2027!

However, there’s a bit of uncertainty regarding the storyline since series creator Nic Pizzolatto criticized one aspect of season 4’s lore as “stupid”, and he also expressed feelings of spiritual exhaustion from dealing with such dark themes. But with some distance, fans are eagerly anticipating his input once more, knowing his exceptional talent in crafting the captivating storylines we saw in season one.
