Fans who are eagerly anticipating the Nintendo Switch 2 were taken aback by the relatively high price unveiled during today’s Direct presentation. However, American buyers might end up paying even more due to a significant tariff rate imposed by President Trump on Vietnam and Cambodia. This tariff could potentially drive up the cost of the Switch 2.

As a fervent fan, I was thrilled for the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct showcase on April 2nd. But, just hours later, my excitement took a hit when U.S. President Donald Trump revealed his intention to levy a minimum tariff of 10% on nearly all imports entering the country. Interestingly, though, he has opted for higher tariff rates on nations with larger trade deficits relative to the United States.
In simpler terms, if you’re an American looking to purchase the Nintendo Switch 2, it might mean you’ll end up paying more if you wait too long. This is because Nintendo moved the manufacturing of this product from China to Vietnam and Cambodia to avoid tariffs. Unfortunately, the U.S. has imposed much higher tariffs on goods from these countries (46% for Vietnam and 49% for Cambodia) compared to the current 34% tariff on Chinese goods.
Despite the Financial Times reporting that Nintendo may have accumulated hundreds of thousands of units in the U.S. over the past few months to counter potential tariff increases, it remains uncertain if the $450 price (or $500 for a bundle with Mario Kart World) currently includes these added costs. If the stockpile depletes and tariffs persist, the price of the Nintendo Switch 2 might rise further. We’ve contacted Nintendo for clarification on how consumers will be impacted by tariffs but are yet to receive a response.
The 25% import tax on computers that Trump imposed recently is starting to influence the PC gaming sector. This tariff applies not only to desktop and laptop computers but also to related components, and there’s a strong possibility it will extend to video game consoles too. The potential rise in price for the upcoming Switch 2 could be one of the outcomes, along with a possible decrease in overall consumer spending due to increased costs.
