The beloved turn-based strategy series Brigandine is returning with a new game, Brigandine Abyss! Originally launched on PlayStation 1 in 1998, the series received a sequel, Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia, in 2020 for Nintendo Switch, PC, and PlayStation 4. Now, developer Hearty Robin is bringing fans a brand-new installment with Brigandine Abyss.
The Brigandine games are single-player strategy games that blend tactical gameplay with RPG elements. Players choose a nation and command its armies to conquer enemy castles and ultimately control the continent. This is done through two turn-based phases: a preparation phase and a battle phase. The series has gained a following among fans of both strategy and RPGs, and the announcement of a new installment is exciting news for those familiar with the games.
Turn-Based Strategy Game From PS1 With New Release for PS5
At February’s State of Play event, the return of the Brigandine series was announced. The turn-based strategy games are getting a new installment called Brigandine Abyss, coming to PS5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC. A trailer was also released, giving players a first look at the gameplay and key features.
RPG fans who enjoy turn-based combat should be excited about Brigandine Abyss. In this single-player game, you’ll play as one of six characters fighting against a powerful empire that wants to take over the land of Meltitea. It keeps the classic series features – like battling on a hexagonal map with knights and monsters – but also introduces new, currently unannounced gameplay systems. The game boasts immersive 3D graphics and over 100 unique battle units, each with different skills and abilities. With six main storylines and optional side quests, Brigandine Abyss offers over 200 hours of gameplay.

Happinet, the game’s developer, says Brigandine Abyss features a brand new world and characters, so you don’t need to have played the other games to enjoy it. They plan to share more details, including the release date, very soon.
Brigandine isn’t the only PlayStation 1 classic getting a modern revival this year. Sony recently announced that Fear Effect 2 and the original Rayman will also be returning, proving that games from over 30 years ago still resonate with players. These legendary titles will get a fresh update, blending nostalgic memories with today’s technology. Whether these remakes successfully capture the spirit of the originals remains to be seen.
