Turok: Origins Devs Say They Know How To Treat Games Based On On Well-Known IPs “Respectfully”

Summary

  • Turok: Origins is a third-person shooter in a major departure from the original games.
  • Saber Interactive promises the same quality and production values as seen in Space Marine 2.
  • Origins will feature compelling narrative, single player, and co-op gameplay.

As a seasoned gamer with memories of my Nintendo 64 days still vividly etched in my mind, I can’t help but feel a mix of nostalgia and anticipation upon hearing about Turok: Origins. The original Turok games were some of the first titles that truly captured my imagination, transporting me to prehistoric jungles teeming with dinosaurs and ancient mysteries.

During The Game Awards, one unexpected unveiling was a fresh addition to the Turok series, named Turok: Origins. This project is being handled by Saber Interactive, known for creating Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.

One significant change that franchise enthusiasts may have observed is that Origins has transitioned into a third-person shooter, unlike the initial games in the series which were played from a first-person perspective. Although this shift might seem substantial compared to what fans of the franchise are accustomed to, Saber Interactive emphasizes that their approach remains faithful to the source material.

Saber Interactive Says Quality and Production Values Of Space Marine 2 Can Be Found In Turok: Origins

During an interview, game director Jesus Iglesias emphasized that their past experience in handling popular intellectual properties (IPs) will guide them in managing Turok: Origins. He explained, “At Saber, we are experts at treating established IPs with the utmost respect, and Turok: Origins is no different.

Iglesias continues by stating, “Players of Space Marine 2 have witnessed the high-quality standards and production values characteristic of Saber, and these elements are also evident in Turok: Origins. Our aim is to captivate players with an engaging storyline and outstanding single-player and cooperative gameplay, much like they enjoyed in Space Marine 2.

Turok initially emerged as a comic book hero way back in 1954 through Four Color Comics. However, it wasn’t until the launch of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter for the Nintendo 64 in 1997 that he gained widespread popularity. Since then, numerous sequels have followed, with the latest game under the franchise, Turok: Escape from the Lost Valley, being released in July 2019 on Xbox One and PC. Sadly, this installment didn’t succeed critically or financially and was subsequently removed from digital stores in January 2022.

In terms of their latest offerings, Nightdive Studios has unveiled refurbished editions of games originally from the Nintendo 64 era, with Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion being the most recent addition, launched in November 2023 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Iglesias’ statement, which may appear self-congratulatory, has a solid foundation since Saber Interactive has managed to produce successful games using established intellectual properties (IPs). Games like World War Z and one based on the Evil Dead film series stand out, with World War Z still receiving regular updates even after more than five years since its release.

Turok: Origins doesn’t have a specific launch date yet, but Saber Interactive has made it clear that the game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms in the future.
