Twisted Metal is Officially Coming Back for Season 3, But With 1 Big Change

Peacock has renewed Twisted Metal for a third season, but with a change in leadership. David Reed will now be the showrunner and executive producer, taking over from Michael Jonathan Smith.

Twisted Metal is a TV show created in partnership between Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Universal Television. It’s based on the popular PlayStation video game series of the same name, which first launched in 1995. The original game was a groundbreaking vehicular combat title known for its 3D graphics. The most recent game in the series was a 2012 reboot for the PlayStation 3, developed by the studio Eat Sleep Play. That studio later closed and its team moved to Avalanche Software in 2017.

Twisted Metal Is Under New Leadership For Its Third Season

Good news for fans of Twisted Metal: the show has been renewed for a third season on Peacock! However, Michael Jonathon Smith will no longer be the showrunner. David Reed will take the lead, and he’ll be joined by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, who were executive producers for the first two seasons. Reed has a strong background in television, having worked on popular shows like The Boys, Supernatural, The Magicians, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Peacock also revealed that Season 2 of Twisted Metal was a huge success, racking up nearly a billion minutes viewed and becoming the second most-watched returning scripted original series in the platform’s history.

The Twisted Metal TV show borrows ideas from the popular PlayStation game series. In Season 2, the central event was the Twisted Metal tournament, led by the enigmatic Calypso, played by Anthony Carrigan. Calypso, also called Mr. Sparks, is a powerful, supernatural being who promises to grant the winner’s greatest wish. However, he’s far from a kind host – his wishes often come with terrible side effects and can turn into real disasters.

After the events of the first season of Twisted Metal, John Doe (played by Anthony Mackie) and Quiet (Stephanie Beatriz) enter the deadly Twisted Metal tournament. They’ll compete against other memorable characters like Sweet Tooth (voiced by Will Arnett and physically portrayed by Samoa Joe), Axel (Michael James Shaw), Dollface (Tiana Okoye), and Mr. Grimm (Richard de Klerk). As the tournament progresses, flashbacks show how these competitors first met Calypso, a mysterious figure who appeared to them in different forms and situations.

Major Spoilers Ahead for the end of Twisted Metal Season 2.

After the events of Twisted Metal‘s second season, John, Quiet, Mayhem, and Stu are forced to go into hiding, pursued by Calypso and his group, the Insiders. Calypso publicly blamed John and Quiet for a mass murder, staging it to look like they caused an explosion during the final match where Stu was declared the winner. While Calypso did fulfill Stu’s wish in a dark way, the aftermath of the tournament has ignited a war between the Insiders and the Outsiders, with the Insiders determined to find and capture John and his friends. John vows to get revenge on the manipulative Calypso, but it remains to be seen how their conflict will unfold.

The post-credits scenes hinted at what’s to come in Season 3 of Twisted Metal. We saw Sweet Tooth, defeated by Dollface (disguised as Minion), being taken to New York, the city ruled by his father, Charlie Kane. Another scene suggested Axel might have survived his apparent sacrifice. This points to an escalating war between the Insiders and Outsiders, with characters like Calypso likely playing key roles. Considering Sweet Tooth is the most popular character from the Twisted Metal games, he’s expected to be central to the new season. Peacock has not yet announced the cast or premiere date for Season 3.

But What About The Twisted Metal Games?

Even though the Twisted Metal show on Peacock has done well, the future of the Twisted Metal game series is uncertain. Details surfaced in early 2025 about a canceled online game project that Lucid Games and Firesprite (both UK studios) had worked on at different times. PlayStation apparently canceled this Twisted Metal game in 2024, as part of a larger shift away from making online service games – a strategy they abandoned after also canceling Concord.

As a huge fan, it’s been way too long since a new Twisted Metal game! Only 10 games have come out so far, and it’s been 13 years since the last one. Unless you’re playing through PlayStation Plus, there haven’t been any Twisted Metal releases on the newer PlayStation consoles – PS4 or PS5. Honestly, I’m really hoping we’ll see the series make a return someday.
