  • Fallenshadow’s ban on her birthday has sparked calls for a human review of the situation and highlighted ongoing concerns about Twitch’s moderation practices.

As a long-time gamer and avid Twitch viewer, I have witnessed numerous incidents where streamers, particularly VTubers like Fallenshadow, have faced seemingly arbitrary bans that left their communities feeling frustrated and confused. I’ve seen it all – from content creators being suspended for innocuous reasons to inconsistent enforcement of community guidelines.

On her birthday, Fallenshadow, a well-known VTuber with over 149K followers on Twitch, encountered an unexpected problem. Twitch, the popular streaming platform owned by Amazon, suspended her account due to alleged violation of “sexually suggestive content representing minors.” This action taken by Twitch has sparked controversy among Fallenshadow and her supporters, who firmly believe that her streams did not merit such a harsh penalty.

Although Twitch is the top streaming platform, it frequently receives criticism for its unpredictable ban implementations. Not all bans align with community standards; some seem random or insufficiently explained, leading to discontent among broadcasters and spectators. A recent instance took place on May 26 when AnimalisaKeys, a Twitch streamer, was given an indefinite ban for supposedly sharing spammy content with violative videos. However, her streams were solely focused on piano playing and didn’t appear to breach any rules. This incident left even Twitch’s CEO bewildered, underlining the continued debate about the platform’s moderation policies.

More recently, Fallenshadow, known for her Just Chatting streams on Twitch, was given a seven-day ban starting on July 23 – which also happened to be her birthday. Prior to the ban, she had planned to go live, but instead received an email suspension notice. The email stated that her VTuber persona’s “pretense of sexual youth” was the cause for the disciplinary action. Unhappy with this decision, Fallenshadow publicly shared the email on Twitter and voiced her disappointment, requesting clarification from Twitch Support, maintaining that her channel does not contain any sexually explicit content.

Twitch Faces Criticism Over Fallenshadow Ban

Many supporters of Fallenshadow came to her aid, asking Twitch to reconsider the decision and have a human examine the situation. They argued that her streams are not sexual in nature and she is an adult. Some fans were also upset about the timing of the ban, which happened on her birthday, and demanded a quick resolution to what they believed was a mistake.

There’s still doubt if Twitch will lift Fallenshadow’s ban within the complete week. It’s important to mention that some prominent Twitch streamers, including Amouranth with a total of ten bans, have faced temporary bans ranging from a few hours to several days.

An instance from last year sparked controversy over Twitch’s handling of VTubers, specifically the ban of Snuffy for an allegedly provocative costume. Critics claimed that Twitch’s application of its community rules was uneven, as comparable offenses by other broadcasters went unpunished. These incidents underscore persistent issues with Twitch’s ban policies and their execution.
