Twitch Issues Another Statement on Emiru TwitchCon Incident

On November 7th, Twitch offered a second apology for not protecting streamer Emily ‘Emiru’ Schunk from an assault that occurred at TwitchCon in San Diego. While Twitch announced a donation to charities fighting sexual harassment, many fans and creators expressed their disappointment with the company’s response on social media.

During a meet-and-greet at TwitchCon 2025 in San Diego, streamer Emiru was harassed and assaulted by someone at the event. The person responsible wasn’t caught for several hours after the incident. Emiru later shared in a stream that she filed a police report to pursue assault and harassment charges and criticized Twitch for not providing enough security or taking responsibility. Many creators and Twitch viewers quickly showed their support for Emiru and her team following the event.

Twitch Apologies Again For Its Failure To Protect Emiru

Twitch recently followed up on its initial statement regarding the assault on Emiru at TwitchCon. In a post on November 7th, the platform admitted it failed to protect Emiru and prevent the incident. Twitch announced it will support organizations fighting sexual assault and harassment in recognition of Emiru’s advocacy, but didn’t share specifics about how it will do so.

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy addressed concerns on X (formerly Twitter) regarding his statements at TwitchCon about Emiru and the event’s security. Building on his previous apology for issues at the convention, Clancy stated that Twitch will review its security procedures and improve how it communicates with its community. However, the reaction to these updates on social media was mostly critical. Many users and creators felt that while a donation to charity was positive, it wasn’t enough to restore trust in Twitch after the problems at TwitchCon. Some people even called for Clancy to step down as CEO due to his acknowledged mistakes.

As of today, Emiru hasn’t spoken publicly about what happened at TwitchCon, and she hasn’t streamed on Twitch since October 25th. It remains to be seen what steps Twitch and TwitchCon will take to better protect everyone who uses and attends the event.
