Twitch has addressed the recent incident involving streamers Valkyrae, Emiru, and Cinna while they were broadcasting live from Santa Monica Pier. This event has raised questions among viewers regarding the security concerns associated with live streaming in real life (IRL) on Twitch and similar platforms.
On March 2nd, Valkyrae, Emiru, and Cinna were in Santa Monica Pier for a continuous streaming event they had been hosting. As they neared the pier, they were spotted by an apparent admirer. However, this situation soon turned sour when the “fan” demanded one of their phone numbers aggressively and the encounter escalated, with him eventually chasing the women while threatening to harm them immediately.
A week after a distressing event on their platform, a Twitch representative has spoken up about the situation to Rolling Stone. In their statement, the rep expressed that Twitch is appalled by any harassment and abuse faced by their creators, whether it takes place on Twitch or elsewhere. They emphasized that Twitch deeply values its streamers and is making efforts to support them. Additionally, they acknowledged ongoing investigations into the matter by Twitch’s safety teams. The representative did not reveal whether the company had contacted Valkyrae, Emiru, or Cinna directly.
Streaming, Snipers, and IRL
Regrettably, it’s not uncommon for live streamers to experience dangerous situations, whether they are streaming from their personal space or public locations. The practice of “stream sniping” in the real world is a problem, as viewers sometimes identify a streamer’s location and attempt to find them. This can lead to distressing situations, such as swatting incidents where the police mistakenly raid innocent people’s homes. In extreme cases, these incidents have been fatal. Additionally, there have been instances of live streamers being physically harmed or even killed while broadcasting in real life.
Following this unfortunate event, Valkyrae has publicly vowed to take every necessary step towards identifying and apprehending the culprit behind the attack. Anyone with relevant information about the suspect is urged to share it with the authorities. Given that his image was visible during the live stream, there’s a chance the police might already have a lead on their suspect. Still, Valkyrae, Emiru, and Cinna may find it hard to fully relax until an arrest has been officially made.
