Twitch Will Start Banning ‘Waiting Room’ Channels

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must say that Twitch‘s recent decision to ban ‘waiting room’ streams is a move that’s long overdue. I remember back in the day when I was just starting out, struggling to make ends meet and pay my bills, only to find some unscrupulous individual leeching off the hard work of others.

As a gamer, I just learned from Twitch Support that ‘waiting room’ channels won’t be allowed anymore in the future due to their classification as ‘Impersonation’. The team mentioned that they’ll scrutinize stream titles and channel bios when moderating such streams, primarily targeting profiles that mimic other creators’ content.

Stealing Revenue

Lately, Twitch has experienced a significant increase in streams labeled as “waiting rooms,” which essentially replay the content of popular streamers for a smaller viewership. These streams are misleadingly referred to as “waiting rooms” because viewers can watch the content before the original streamer starts their live broadcast on the platform.

According to the recent update in the regulations, interacting with someone else’s live stream via reaction streams does not breach the rules. This is due to the fact that these interactions involve some level of active participation and commentary.

As a gamer, I’m always eagerly waiting for the next big update or character drop. So, I like to set up a live stream with a waiting room, giving my fellow gamers a place to gather and chat while we all wait in anticipation together. It’s a great way to build community and share the excitement of the impending expansion or character release!

Here’s what Twitch Support said on social media:

In order to guarantee proper enforcement, we’ll consider various aspects including the title of the stream and the description in the channel bio, along with whether we’ve been notified about an impersonation incident by that specific channel.

One way to rephrase this in a more natural and easy-to-read manner is: “Our aim is to tackle streams that act as ‘copycat’ platforms – for instance, channels that mainly repost content from other channels without providing their own commentary or creative additions, and thereby drawing viewers and potential income away from the original channel creators.

Do you think this is a good rule change, or are you a fan of waiting room streams?
