Two Crucial Hobbits are Must-Have NPCs for Tales of the Shire

As a lifelong fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic masterpiece “The Lord of the Rings”, I am beyond thrilled about the upcoming release of Weta Workshop’s “Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game”. Having grown up with the books and movies, I have a soft spot for the mischievous duo Merry and Pippin.

It’s anticipated that Weta Workshop will launch the Hobbit life simulator titled “Tales from the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Experience” around early 2025 on platforms such as Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC. In this game, players will immerse themselves in the peaceful life of a Hobbit residing in the growing village of Bywater. Although it’s a single-player game, there are plenty of enjoyable activities to engage in, like decorating Hobbit homes, interacting with villagers for trading purposes, and organizing lavish feasts with fellow residents. Noteworthy characters from the series, including Merry and Pippin, known for their mischief, are expected to make an appearance in this game, standing out particularly well within “Tales from the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Experience“.

The Lord of the Rings’ Merry and Pippin Explained

In the renowned “The Lord of the Rings” series, which includes both books and movies, a group of four Hobbits are the main characters in the battle against the evil Dark Lord Sauron. Most fans will recall Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee as the pair who journeyed across Middle-earth to Mount Doom and destroyed the One Ring. Yet, it’s possible that a few fans overlooked two other Hobbits who accompanied Frodo and Sam on their mission: Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took. Initially close friends, Merry and Pippin were known for causing trouble, with even Gandalf the Grey acknowledging their mischief and thefts.

The lively personalities of Merry and Pippin led them into Frodo’s quest, as they had stolen crops from a farmer and encountered him and Sam on their way to the Prancing Pony. When they became part of the Fellowship, their mischievousness subsided somewhat but still surfaced during joyous moments, like after the Battles of Helm’s Deep and Isengard. However, their impulsiveness was evident in critical situations as well, such as when Pippin woke Goblins in the Mines of Moria and later grabbed Saruman’s Palantir. Merry typically demonstrated more intelligence among the two cousins.

Merry and Pippin’s Feats and Legacy

In spite of their jovial and sometimes reckless demeanor, Merry and Pippin exhibited remarkable courage throughout the War of the Ring. They managed to persuade the Ents, tree-like beings, to engage in battle against the malevolent sorcerer Saruman and assault Isengard. Pippin accompanied Gandalf to Gondor, aided in its defense from Orcs, and rescued Faramir. Merry joined Eowyn in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields and assisted in defeating the Witch-king of Angmar. Later, both hobbits contributed to the fight against Sauron’s final army at the Battle of the Black Gate and even spearheaded the Battle of Bywater to liberate their Hobbit village from Saruman’s control in the novels.

In Gondor, many years following the War of the Ring, Aragorn, Merry, and Pippin were all laid to rest together.

Merry and Pippin’s Potential Roles in Tales of the Shire

In the timeline of “The Lord of the Rings,” the specific setting of “Tales of the Shire” hasn’t been definitively established yet, but there is a possibility that characters like Merry and Pippin might feature in the game. So far, only Gandalf the Grey has made an appearance in the game’s promotional materials, suggesting that “Tales of the Shire” takes place prior to “The Fellowship of the Ring.” Although a significant amount of time passes before the formation of the Fellowship, it’s speculated that “Tales of the Shire” could occur after “The Hobbit,” allowing for Bilbo Baggins to incorporate some of his Dwarven treasures as in-game decor and for younger versions of Merry and Pippin to be included.

In Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game, Merry and Pippin might appear as Non-Player Characters (NPCs) who occasionally engage in mischief or snatch items from neighboring characters in Bywater. This could infuse some humor and unpredictable excitement into the otherwise tranquil lifestyle of Bywater. Besides causing trouble, these Hobbits can offer players tasks to recover items for their pranks, motivating players to delve deeper into the surroundings of Bywater. This interaction with Merry and Pippin would not only make the game more immersive but also provide fans with a unique opportunity to engage with some of Middle-earth’s most beloved characters. In essence, integrating Merry and Pippin in the game could underscore that Tales of the Shire is set in one of Middle-earth’s happiest and cheerful locales.
