Ubisoft Brings 9-Year-Old PS4 Game to PS5

Ubisoft recently revealed that The Division is now optimized for PlayStation 5, enabling a smoother gameplay experience with a frame rate of 60 frames per second. Previously, the game only ran at 30 FPS on PS5, and some players reported problems with lag and other technical difficulties.

First released in March 2016, The Division is nearing its tenth anniversary, but players still enjoy its immersive world and engaging shooting mechanics. In the game, you play as a special agent working to reclaim a snow-covered New York City from gangs that emerged after a devastating viral outbreak. While the main story is decent, the game is best remembered for its Dark Zone – a unique blend of player-versus-player and player-versus-environment combat that pioneered the ‘extraction shooter’ genre, paving the way for games like Arc Raiders and Escape from Tarkov.

Since its launch in 2016, the world of The Division has expanded significantly. Beyond the main sequel released in 2018, the franchise includes six novels, two comic book series, and a new mobile game called The Division Resurgence on the way. A live-action movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain was also planned for Netflix, but production has been paused indefinitely, reportedly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as stated by producer Kelly McCormick in December 2022.

The Division Is Available Now on PlayStation 5 With a 60 FPS Update

Starting December 17, 2025, players can revisit the original Division game on PlayStation 5 with improved performance. Ubisoft announced an update on X (formerly Twitter) that allows the game to run at a consistent 60 frames per second on PS5. Best of all, the update is free for anyone who already owns the game on either disc or digitally for PS4.

Ubisoft hasn’t said why it’s updating a game that came out almost ten years ago, but they’ve recently released similar updates to improve performance (specifically to 60 frames per second) in some of their older games. For example, The Division 2 received a 60 FPS update for Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 two years after its initial release, back in February 2021.

Every Ubisoft Game That’s Received a 60 FPS Update So Far

  • Ghost Recon Breakpoint (November 2020)
  • For Honor (December 2020)
  • Rainbow Six Siege (December 2020)
  • Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (August 2021)
  • Assassin’s Creed Origins (May 2022)
  • The Crew 2 (July 2022)
  • Far Cry 5 (March 2023)
  • Assassin’s Creed Syndicate (November 2024)
  • Far Cry New Dawn (February 2025)
  • Far Cry 4 (April 2025)
  • The Division (December 2025)

This year, Ubisoft has improved the performance of three games to run at 60 frames per second: The Division, Far Cry New Dawn, and Far Cry 4. Although Far Cry New Dawn came out six years ago, Far Cry 4 is even older, originally released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in November 2014 – more than ten years ago.

It’s great that several games have received updates to run at 60 frames per second, but many other popular Ubisoft titles could still benefit from improvements for newer consoles. For example, Far Cry 3 is still a fan favorite, but even the updated PlayStation 4 version only runs at 30 FPS on the PlayStation 5. Several Assassin’s Creed games are in the same situation, including Assassin’s Creed: The Ezio Collection and the underrated Assassin’s Creed Rogue.
