As a dedicated gamer and long-time Ubisoft follower, I find myself at the edge of my seat as we navigate this intriguing chapter in the company’s history. The potential buyout by Tencent, a significant player in the gaming industry, is indeed an exciting prospect.
Discussions about a possible privatization of Ubisoft are gaining momentum. Following the initial news in October about a potential buyout, the Guillemot family has been holding talks with prospective collaborators.
In the latest report from Reuters, Ubisoft’s current owners are still in talks with Tencent and other investors about the possibility of purchasing one of the biggest game studios globally. As per this report, the Guillemot family has expressed a desire to maintain control over the company if it is sold.
It’s been mentioned that Tencent has yet to make up its mind about expanding its stake in the company. Nevertheless, discussions with the Chinese firm also include a plan to ward off any possible hostile acquisition of Ubisoft by other investors.
Tencent, being the second largest shareholder of Ubisoft, holds approximately 10% of the company. The reason for a potential delay in decision-making might be due to Tencent’s desire for more influence on future board matters, such as determining how funds are distributed. However, the Guillemot family has reportedly not consented to this proposed provision yet.
Regarding the report, a representative from Ubisoft shared with Reuters that they are dedicated to making choices benefiting all parties involved. To clarify, they’ve mentioned that the company is indeed examining various potential strategies as part of their overall plan.
Tencent declined to comment on the report.
Initially, when the recent update was released, the company’s stock trading was put on hold. But once it resumed, the share prices surged by a significant 13%, according to the latest reports.
Lately, it’s been shared that Ubisoft has decided to halt production on their free-to-play rival to Call of Duty, XDefiant. TopMob was the first to break the news about the game being taken offline.
