The production cost of “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” has been revealed to be over $116 million, a significant amount during a year when Ubisoft, its publisher, experienced substantial financial losses. However, this figure is lower than the annual net losses reported by the company. Despite appearing large, “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” is expected to bring financial benefits to Ubisoft in the future.
The sales success of the feudal Japan-themed installment of Assassin’s Creed, titled Shadows, has been widely recognized. On its release day, the company revealed that it had one of the second-largest launch days in the franchise’s history, with only 2020’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla selling more on its debut. An external analysis by Circana Retail Tracking Service ranked Shadows as the second top-selling game during the first quarter of 2025, with Monster Hunter Wilds leading the pack.
During a recent gathering for Ubisoft shareholders regarding “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”, it is said that CEO Yves Guillemot revealed the game’s production cost exceeded €100 million, as reported by TweakTown. This equates to approximately $116.25 million in U.S. currency. This amount encompasses development, production, distribution, and marketing expenses. It is important to note that this figure isn’t precise, as Guillemot mentioned Ubisoft typically keeps final production costs confidential. However, he suggested a significant portion of the outlay was allocated towards enhancing the game’s engine technology.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Was a Pretty Expensive Game to Make
The budget of this particular game is quite substantial and ranks it among the top 30 most expensive games ever made, but there are other industry titans whose costs far outweigh it. While specifics can vary, miHoYo’s Genshin Impact might be the costliest game ever produced, with its budget reaching an estimated $900 million by September 2024 (when adjusted for inflation), according to predictions derived from the company’s financial data. Other reports suggest that Scopely’s mobile game Monopoly GO is roughly equal in terms of cost, and some even estimate its budget to surpass $1 billion.
Despite Guillemot’s reports indicating that “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” is trailing behind, the impressive figure might instill some apprehension among Ubisoft fans, considering the recent unfavorable financial forecast. A Ubisoft financial report disclosed in May revealed losses amounting to approximately $178 million for the 2024-2025 fiscal year. The primary cause of these losses has been attributed to the negative response towards “Star Wars Outlaws” and the lackluster performance of the closed “XDefiant”, but promising figures from the “Assassin’s Creed” and “Rainbow Six” franchises suggest a more optimistic report next May.
