The strategy game Anno 117: Pax Romana is facing criticism after it was discovered to be using art created by artificial intelligence. Ubisoft, the game’s developer, has acknowledged the issue. This comes after the success of Anno 1800 (released in 2019), which was particularly known for its beautiful, hand-drawn visuals.
Fans have been particularly focused on the use of generative AI in the game Anno 117, likely because of the game’s artistic style. Since the game launched on November 13th, players have noticed telltale signs of AI-generated imagery in the background art and loading screens. These images, intended to be colorful and impressionistic depictions of Ancient Rome, often include odd glitches, distorted faces and limbs, and other common issues with AI-created art. Ubisoft has now confirmed that players were right to be suspicious, admitting they used AI to create at least one of the questioned illustrations.
Similar to many recent PC games, Anno 117’s Steam page states that it used AI tools to help create some of the game’s content. However, the developers at Ubisoft Mainz emphasize that the final game still represents their own artistic work and creative ideas.
Ubisoft Admits to Using “Placeholder” AI Art in Anno 117: Pax Romana
Several pieces of artwork in the game Anno 117 have been suspected of being created using artificial intelligence, but Ubisoft has only officially addressed one instance: an illustration used for a loading screen depicting a lavish banquet. Many people noticed clear signs that the image was AI-generated, including blurry, distorted faces and strangely proportioned figures in the background. According to a report by TheGamer, Ubisoft released the following statement:
We mistakenly included a temporary image in a recent update, and we apologize for that. The correct image is now available and will be included in the upcoming 1.3 patch. Creating Anno 117: Pax Romana is our biggest project yet, and our artists are using AI tools to help them explore ideas and create all the details players will see. While we’re using these tools, everything in the final game is still crafted with the skill, artistry, and creative vision of our team.
Ubisoft recently released a new promotional image that doesn’t seem to use AI-generated elements. As of now, the company hasn’t responded to concerns about other images that people believe were created using AI, and those images still appear on their page for Anno 117.
It’s probably not the end of the conversation about AI-generated art and the game Anno 117. Ubisoft says the AI image was a temporary placeholder that accidentally made it into the game, but it’s strange that the development team at Ubisoft Mainz didn’t catch it, especially since players noticed it right away. This situation isn’t helping Ubisoft, as they only fixed the image after being called out by the community. And with other images potentially created by AI still appearing, this issue will likely continue to be discussed for some time.
