Ubisoft Devs Reportedly Call Assassin’s Creed Invictus ‘Ridiculous’

The Assassin’s Creed series, created by Ubisoft nearly 19 years ago, is famous for its immersive historical settings in video games. Players have been able to journey through time and explore places like Ancient Greece and Victorian London.

Although recent Assassin’s Creed games focus on single-player stories, earlier titles like Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag included multiplayer modes where players could compete as Templars training within the Animus.

The last mainline Assassin’s Creed game to feature multiplayer was Assassin’s Creed Unity, which allowed players to control four versions of Arno Dorian for cooperative missions and heists. However, recent rumors and leaks indicate that Ubisoft is developing a new Assassin’s Creed game, currently known as Codename Invictus, that will be entirely focused on multiplayer gameplay.

Recent claims from someone reportedly working at Ubisoft suggest their new multiplayer game isn’t shaping up well. Apparently, while leaders at the company are optimistic, developers aren’t impressed with the current state of the game.

The game Assassin’s Creed Invictus was initially announced in 2022 during an interview with Marc-Alexis Cote, a Vice President and Executive Producer on Assassin’s Creed. However, shortly after the announcement, rumors and leaks began to surface, suggesting that Invictus would be connected to Assassin’s Creed Infinity, which is now called the Animus Hub.

Recent reports indicate that the upcoming Invictus game might let players control iconic characters like Ezio and Kassandra in large-scale, 16-player PvP matches similar to battle royale. These reports gained further credibility when several voice actors from the Assassin’s Creed series hinted at returning for new projects in 2025.

Comments from a Ubisoft employee who wished to remain unnamed suggest the new multiplayer game isn’t shaping up well.

The team at Ubisoft Montreal, known for games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and For Honor, is currently heading up the development of Invictus. Alexandre Poirer, who worked on the sound design for Valhalla, revealed in 2024 that he’s now part of the Invictus project.

Although Ubisoft hasn’t officially announced details about Invictus, a source at the company reportedly told French YouTuber J0nathan that it will be a game similar to Fall Guys. The source also indicated that many of the developers working on the game aren’t fans of it.

According to one Ubisoft developer who wished to remain anonymous, no one on the team actually enjoys working on Invictus. They believe that only management will publicly support the project, describing it as poorly made with stiff animations, unattractive, cartoonish characters, and uninspired sound and visual effects. They also found the combat arenas and overall concept to be disappointing.

Jonathan explained on X (formerly Twitter) that the game Invictus is shaping up to be more like Fortnite than previous Assassin’s Creed games. It’s currently planned to release in 2027, but that date could shift due to Ubisoft recently delaying and canceling some other games.
