Ubisoft is ending remote work for its employees. Going forward, most employees will be required to work from the office full-time.
On Wednesday, the French publisher announced significant changes, including the cancellation of several games, such as the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake. Along with a greater focus on live-service games and large open-world titles, the company also revealed a new policy that will affect all its employees.
Ubisoft Wants All Employees In The Office
Ubisoft announced that all employees will be required to return to the office five days a week. After that, they’ll receive a set number of days each year that they can work from home.
The changes are designed to improve teamwork, encourage continuous learning, and boost how well teams work together. Specifically, being able to collaborate in person is crucial for boosting efficiency, creativity, and overall success, especially in the highly competitive AAA game market.
Marie Sophie de Waubert, SVP of Studio Operations, explained to GamesIndustry.biz that the company continues to use a mix of remote and in-office work, but the arrangement has been adjusted.
Following the initial announcement, someone close to TopMob’s Mike Straw predicted the layoffs would likely affect hundreds of employees. During a company call about these changes, Ubisoft declined to say if further layoffs were planned as part of the restructuring.
The company has recently reduced its workforce at several locations, including Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft Abu Dhabi. It also closed its Halifax studio, among other changes.
