A recent report indicates that the long-anticipated Assassin’s Creed multiplayer game, which was in the works, has been cancelled. Although future Assassin’s Creed multiplayer projects aren’t completely off the table, this is likely disappointing news for players hoping for a new AC game with online play.
The Assassin’s Creed series first added multiplayer with Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood in 2010, and continued it through games like Revelations, Black Flag, and Unity. But for more than ten years, the series hasn’t included any competitive or cooperative online modes, and recent hopes for a new game with these features have been dashed.
Assassin’s Creed League Gets Shut Down
A new Assassin’s Creed project set in feudal Japan, where players would have controlled four different assassins, has been canceled. The French website Origami reported the news, stating they confirmed it with multiple Ubisoft employees. Originally planned as downloadable content (DLC) for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and potentially part of the game’s season pass, Assassin’s Creed League was more ambitious than typical DLC. It aimed to lay the groundwork for future Assassin’s Creed games and bring multiplayer back to the series.
So, it sounds like the developers started to feel this project was dragging on, and they didn’t think it really fit with Assassin’s Creed Shadows. But they didn’t just abandon it completely! They were planning to turn it into a smaller, separate multiplayer game, probably using some of the stuff they’d already made for Shadows. They weren’t expecting to even have a playable version until May 2026, but now that’s off the table too. Apparently, this whole cancellation was a shock to the team at Ubisoft Annecy – they only found out about it a week ago, which is really rough.
Not All Is Necessarily Lost for Assassin’s Creed Multiplayer Future
While Assassin’s Creed Shadows won’t be getting an official multiplayer mode, there’s still a possibility that future Assassin’s Creed games could feature it. Some developers who worked on the multiplayer project are now focusing on integrating that work—originally built using AC League—into Ubisoft’s Anvil engine. This makes it easier to add multiplayer to future games and ensures the previous efforts weren’t wasted.
