Ubisoft Reportedly Lays Off Employees Across Its US Offices

Highlights

  • Ubisoft has reportedly laid off 45 US-based employees in a cost-cutting move, marking the second round of job cuts in 2024.
  • Major game companies like Microsoft and Sony have also implemented layoffs and restructuring post-pandemic.
  • Ubisoft is said to be providing severance pay and career assistance to affected employees.

As a dedicated gamer with years of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness and concern every time I hear about layoffs in our beloved gaming industry. Ubisoft, a company that has brought us some of the most memorable games like Assassin’s Creed and Prince of Persia, is now facing another round of job cuts. It’s disheartening to see such a titan struggling, especially when it’s our beloved characters and worlds that are at stake.

According to reports, game developer Ubisoft (known for creating titles like Assassin’s Creed and Prince of Persia) has reportedly let go of approximately 45 employees from two of its offices based in the United States. This recent development in the gaming industry adds to the ongoing trend of layoffs this year, with Ubisoft itself experiencing job reductions previously.

In recent times, layoffs have been frequent and severe across the gaming industry, affecting both large corporations such as Microsoft and Sony, and independent developers alike. As part of post-pandemic adjustments and cost management strategies, these industry giants have significantly reduced their workforce, in some cases shutting down entire studios completely.

As a former employee at a gaming company, I understand the difficult decisions that management has to make when it comes to downsizing and layoffs. Having been through such a situation myself, I can empathize with those affected by the recent job cuts at Ubisoft’s studios in San Francisco and Cary.

Ubisoft May Have Unleashed Another Round of Job Cuts

Significantly, there have been reports that Ubisoft will be reducing its workforce for a second time this year. Most recently, employees at Ubisoft Toronto – responsible for creating Watch Dogs Legion – were let go as late as June. This move was made while they were still working on the eagerly anticipated remake of Splinter Cell, causing concern among fans of the stealth series. It’s important to mention that Red Storm Entertainment and Ubisoft San Francisco haven’t announced any major projects at this point, but it’s worth noting that these latest layoffs occur just before a critical period for Ubisoft when they are set to release significant titles like Star Wars Outlaws and Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Despite a prolonged period of instability in the gaming sector, companies like Nintendo have managed to maintain their workforce without large-scale layoffs. Notably, influential figures within the industry such as Hidetaka Miyazaki, President of FromSoftware, and Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian Studios, have been vocal opponents of mass terminations. In response to layoffs, Miyazaki has expressed his intention to prevent them, while Vincke advised leaders to prioritize their employees’ well-being and attributed job losses to excessive greed. As the industry unites against mass dismissals, it appears that this trend may eventually diminish.
