Ubisoft Reveals AI-Driven Research Project, Teammates

Ubisoft recently announced a new research project called Teammates, which uses artificial intelligence. The announcement followed a report of strong sales for Assassin’s Creed: Mirage during the company’s earnings call.

Artificial intelligence has been part of video games for a while, but its applications are rapidly changing. Previously, AI was mostly used for creating non-player characters (NPCs) that followed pre-programmed instructions. Now, AI can potentially handle tasks like art creation, voiceovers, and even generate entire games. However, this increasing reliance on AI could lead to a loss of the human element, which is crucial for quality. Game developer Ubisoft is now exploring this potential with a new research project called Teammates.

Ubisoft’s Teammates Uses an AI Voice Assistant, Self-Programmable NPCs

We’re excited to introduce Teammates, a research project using AI to make gaming more immersive. It’s not just about simple chatbots – we’re developing AI that allows non-player characters (NPCs) to feel like true teammates, adding a new level of depth to gameplay. Learn more here:…

Ubisoft recently showcased “Teammates,” a new project featuring AI-controlled teammates, in a blog post and on X (formerly Twitter). While gameplay details are still limited, we now have a better understanding of the concept. Teammates is an FPS where you and two AI characters work together to rescue five resistance members from an enemy base. To help you on your mission, you’ll have Jaspar, an AI assistant who offers gameplay and story advice and can even change settings using voice commands.

The blog post dives deeper into how the game works, particularly focusing on your AI companions, Pablo and Sofia. You can direct them using voice commands – telling them where to move, who to target, and even shaping the story as you play. Virginie Mosser, Narrative Director at Teammates, shared more details about these NPCs in the post, explaining that…

As a fan, I’m really excited about how the developers want us to feel like we’re actually influencing the story, not just watching it happen. What’s especially cool is the AI companion, Sofia. Apparently, she doesn’t just deliver lines – she actually responds to what I say to her, and that changes how the story unfolds for me. It sounds like a huge step forward, letting each player have a truly unique experience. It’s awesome to think I can shape the narrative with my choices and conversations!

Currently, we aren’t sharing anything publicly just yet. We’re working on an explanatory video, but we don’t have a release date for it. We did conduct playtests earlier this year, and more are planned. The development team consistently emphasizes that human creativity is central to Teammates. However, the extensive use of AI and chatbots does make that claim somewhat questionable.

TopMob recently shared details about Project Scout, a multiplayer shooter currently in development at Ubisoft. Based on the screenshots and user interface, it appears ‘Teammates’ might be the game’s actual name. If Project Scout is released, players may end up battling alongside AI characters instead of other people.
