As a gamer, I’ve been noticing some changes within the gaming industry lately, and one of them affects Ubisoft. They’re going through a series of adjustments, or as they call it, “restructurings”. Unfortunately, this means that their studio based in Leamington, United Kingdom, is shutting down completely. Additionally, they’re reducing the workforce at studios located in Düsseldorf, Stockholm, and Newcastle. It’s a tough time for the gaming community as we wait to see what these changes will bring.
In line with our continuous focus on streamlining projects and cutting expenses for long-term sustainability at Ubisoft, we have declared strategic reorganizations for Ubisoft Düsseldorf, Ubisoft Stockholm, and Ubisoft Reflections, as well as the permanent shutdown of the Ubisoft Leamington branch, as communicated by a Ubisoft representative to Eurogamer.
I’m sorry to report that this change may affect a total of 185 team members. We greatly appreciate their hard work and dedicate ourselves to assisting them during this period of transition.
Of the 185 jobs lost, 50 come from the Leamington studio closure.
2025 job losses from recent layoffs are estimated to exceed 500, and could be as high as 650. The gaming industry experienced more than 16,000 job losses in 2024.
In the past five months, Ubisoft has shut down its third studio, following closures of their San Francisco and Osaka offices which were announced after the cancellation of XDefiant last autumn.
At the moment, Ubisoft is contemplating various strategies aimed at revitalizing their company, which has experienced declining value over recent years. Part of these considerations involves negotiations with Chinese corporation Tencent regarding a potential partnership focusing on Ubisoft’s existing resources for a new joint venture.
