Ubisoft Workers Encouraged To Strike Over Return To Office Mandate

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I find myself deeply sympathetic to the Ubisoft employees who are being encouraged to strike. The current situation is reminiscent of a boss in a classic RPG game who demands you to return to the castle without providing any tangible reasons or consulting the party members (in this case, the workers).

Workers at Ubisoft’s French branches are encouraged to go on a work stoppage due to their disagreement with the company’s new global policy, which requires employees to physically return to the office.

In October, STJV (The Video Game Workers and Employees Union) issued a call for a strike spanning three days, claiming that there was no legitimate reason or consultation with worker representatives provided for the enforcement of a return-to-office policy.

After over five years of effectively working remotely, numerous team members have established or restructured their personal lives (family, homes, parenting, etc.). Due to this change, they find it impossible to return to the previous work setup. Our union’s statement clearly communicates this to our employer. If the company persists with its decision, it will result in job losses for many, disruption of several game projects, and a significant rise in psychosocial risks for those who continue working.

According to STJV, their requirements are straightforward. They’re pushing for a formal remote work contract and salary increases across the board to offset declines in living standards over the past few years. Furthermore, they want the company to adopt genuine “social conversation” instead of what appears to be a one-sided discussion that management often mistakes for dialogue.

STJV is asking for all France-based employees to strike from October 15-17.

Employees are calling for a strike as Ubisoft experiences one of its rockiest periods in years. The firm announced on Wednesday that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be released in February, and also disclosed that an investigation and review of the company would commence. Additionally, the company’s stock prices have dipped to levels not seen in over a decade due to adjustments in financial goals for the year.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve pinged Ubisoft for their thoughts on the matter. If they get back to me, their comments will be incorporated into this article.
