However, it’s essential to clarify that this doesn’t automatically imply that Luffy has emerged victorious in every single battle he participated in.

It’s astonishing to note that several notable characters from One Piece have been able to overpower Luffy and emerge victorious in battle on multiple occasions, an achievement remarkable given his tremendous growth in power throughout the series. The smoker character easily outran Luffy and defeated both him and Sanji effortlessly, had it not been for Dragon’s unexpected arrival, part of the crew might have been captured by the Marines as early as the Loguetown Arc. Regrettably, Smoker is no longer as powerful now, but many fans are hoping he’ll receive a worthy comeback in an upcoming storyline.

7. Caesar Clown

During the two-year time skip, Luffy significantly increased his strength, necessitating a formidable opponent who could challenge him, even using unusual tactics. That’s why Caesar Clown was brought into the story as the primary villain for the Punk Hazard Arc.

In contrast to some other formidable antagonists from “One Piece”, Caesar might not have been as powerful; however, his mentally unstable genius and the Gasu Gasu no Mi, a Devil Fruit that allows him to manipulate and produce poisonous gas, made him extremely dangerous. This was particularly evident against Luffy, who is straightforward and relatively simple-minded. In their initial encounter, Caesar easily dominated with his toxic gas, but luckily for the Straw Hat Pirates’ captain, he was able to ultimately defeat Caesar during their subsequent confrontation.

In the early stages of the series, Luffy found it tough to fight Logia Devil Fruit users, making it difficult for him to even touch, let alone hurt Crocodile during their initial encounter. The encounter ended with Crocodile, the Sea Warlord, impaling Luffy through his chest with a hook. Their second battle didn’t fare well for Luffy either, despite him realizing he could strike Crocodile if he shielded himself with water. However, it was in their third and last fight that Luffy finally defeated the wicked pirate. This final bout presented a significant challenge for Luffy as well.

In most story arcs within One Piece, Luffy usually overpowers the primary adversary. However, there have been some unexpected instances where he does not, such as with Magellan. During the Impel Down Arc, Magellan served as the main antagonist and quickly proved to be a formidable challenge for all characters involved, due to his role as the chief warden of Impel Down prison.

Magellan’s special ability, the Doku Doku no Mi, enables him to produce and command massive quantities of poison. This lethal power allowed him to overwhelm and poison Luffy, who might have perished on the spot had it not been for Bon Clay’s intervention. Despite this, Luffy managed to face Magellan again at the end of the arc, largely due to Mr. 3’s wax abilities. Their second encounter ended inconclusively. However, it would be quite thrilling to witness Luffy defeating Magellan in a future storyline, particularly if he ever decides to revisit Impel Down.

This meeting left a lasting impact on Luffy, serving as one of the key motivations for him to grow stronger during his adventures at Water 7 and Enies Lobby.

The Marines responded to this situation by dispatching Admiral Kizaru, who swiftly outmatched the Straw Hat Pirates in power.

Although Borsalino appeared laid-back and easygoing, he posed a significant danger to his crew, primarily because of the tremendous power of the Pika Pika no Mi. This devil fruit granted him the ability to launch devastating attacks at speeds approaching light, making him invulnerable to physical harm from those who lacked Haki. His confrontation with the Straw Hat Pirates verged on a massacre; not even Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji could touch him during their encounter. To compound their troubles, they were already fatigued from their previous battle against a Pacifista within the same arc. Had it not been for Bartholomew Kuma’s selfless actions, the Straw Hat Pirates would have perished on Sabaody Archipelago. Fortunately, Luffy was able to engage Borsalino in combat two years later with more success than before.

In their first face-off in Kuri, Luffy found it impossible to breach Kaido’s robust defenses; a single Thunder Bagua from Kaido sent Luffy sprawling unconscious.
