Spoilers ahead for My Hero Academia: Vigilantes
Summary
- Cloud’s simple manipulation of clouds proves effective for both offense and defense in battles.
- Queen Bee’s ability to possess bodies and create explosive bees makes it a uniquely powerful quirk.
- Slide And Glide’s evolution showcases the potential growth and versatility of quirks with consistent training.
In the realm of shōnen action anime, few power systems are as intriguing as that found in “My Hero Academia”. These extraordinary abilities, known as Quirks, grant individuals the capacity to perform astonishing and unusual feats. The main series has certainly showcased numerous potent ones, and this is equally true for My Hero Academia: Vigilantes.
In the critically praised spin-off/prequel I’m observing, an array of potent and peculiar abilities, or ‘quirks’, are showcased. These quirks are wielded by our heroes, villains, and the titular vigilantes alike. Some of these quirks are freshly minted for this new tale, while others have been carried over from the original series, but are presented in a refreshingly novel light. No matter their source, the following quirks exude an extraordinary power within Vigilantes.
8. Cloud
Oboro Shirakumo (Loud Cloud)
- First Appearance: Chapter 59 (Vigilantes)
Cloud, a seemingly basic ability, serves as a powerful demonstration of how even the simplest powers can be incredibly effective when wielded by a smart user. In the heart-wrenching and thrilling flashback scene, it was the unique talent of Oboro Shirakumo, Shota Aizawa’s childhood friend, that took center stage.
Under the fitting moniker, Cloud, Shirakumo possesses the ability to create and control diverse cloud formations. This skill enables him to obstruct his adversary’s sight, shield against powerful strikes, and swiftly navigate through the skies at high velocities. Remarkably useful in combat situations, this quirk proves its worth. It is likely that All for One recognized its potential, as he employed Cloud as the foundation for Warp Gate when transforming Shirakumo into the Nomu known as Kurogiri.
7. Queen Bee
Kuin Hachisuka And Bee☆Pop
- First Appearance: Chapter 5 (Vigilantes)
It’s indisputable that the peculiarity known as “Queen Bee” stands out among the intriguing idiosyncrasies in the universe of “My Hero Academia.” This unusual ability manifests as a collective of living bee drones, functioning as one consciousness. Remarkably, the originator of this power is none other than a real bee named Kuin Hachisuka. This bee has the capacity to seize control of various individuals by using its powers, effectively taking over their bodies.
The primary asset of Queen Bee lies in its native talent to utilize bees for carrying and dispensing substances within a specific region, much like the Trigger drug. It has an extraordinary capacity to mimic another person’s unique abilities simply by gathering a tiny sample from them. Moreover, its most potent skill is the Bomb Bees, which can transform a massive swarm of bees into powerful flying explosives. When Queen Bee assumed the role of the villain called Bee☆Pop, she predominantly employed the Bomb Bees in her attacks.
6. Bombify / Self-Detonation
Number 6 And The Bombers
- First Appearance: Chapter 57 / Chapter 46 (Vigilantes)
In the anime “My Hero Academia: Vigilantes,” Character Number 6 serves as the primary villain, so it’s not surprising that he possesses multiple potent abilities simultaneously (all of which were bestowed upon him by All for One). One of these formidable powers is Bombify, a unique quirk that enables him to transform his body using Bomber cells and generate biological explosives.
Instead of generating explosives alone, Number 6 requires an additional ability for self-destructive blasts. This unique trait is referred to as Self-Detonation. Essentially, this power enables the user to trigger a destructive explosion by self-detonating. When combined with Bombify, Number 6 can blow off his own limbs, re-grow them, and continuously manufacture more explosives in the process.
5. Flight
Christopher Skyline (Captain Celebrity)
- First Appearance: Chapter 14 (Vigilantes)
Initially, Flight may appear as a typical superpower reminiscent of western comics, endowing Captain Celebrity with the capability to move swiftly through the air. While this ability is undeniably practical, it can be rather mundane in comparison to the eccentric traits exhibited by characters in shows like My Hero Academia and Vigilantes.
In truth, Captain Celebrity’s ability to fly isn’t just about soaring through the skies; it involves generating an aerodynamic shield around him. This protective barrier not only enables his flight but also enhances his physical prowess, shielding him from extreme temperatures and harm. What makes this power even more remarkable is that he can extend this barrier to others, allowing him to transport them or safeguard them from peril. Consequently, Captain Celebrity’s Flight is a multifaceted talent that has played a significant role in his ascension as one of the United States’ mightiest heroes.
4. Slide And Glide
Koichi Haimawari (The Crawler / The Skycrawler)
- First Appearance: Chapter 1 (Vigilantes)
A unique aspect that distinguishes “My Hero Academia” from other action shonen series is that its special abilities, or quirks, can develop and advance when consistently trained and properly utilized. An excellent demonstration of this developmental process is the Slide and Glide quirk possessed by Koichi Haimawari, a key character in “Vigilantes”.
Initially, when it was initially unveiled, it merely enabled him to glide at a moderate pace across the ground, a feat that wasn’t particularly remarkable. However, throughout the narrative, Koichi diligently honed his unique ability, ultimately discovering its full potential and devising numerous practical applications for it, such as adhering to walls, firing small propulsive blasts, and even soaring through the air. This is due to the fact that Slide and Glide actually enables him to produce both attractive and repulsive forces from his hands and feet. The true extent of this power was vividly demonstrated at the climax of the story when Koichi unlocked his Ultimate Technique: Knuckle Style, a move where he generates four repulsive fields on his knuckles to deliver a powerful, explosive punch to his adversary.
3. Overclock
Iwao Oguro (O’Clock) And Number 6
- First Appearance: Chapter 26 (Vigilantes)
In the universe of My Hero Academia, several leading Pro Heroes share similarities with well-known American superheroes such as Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man. However, it wasn’t until the arrival of the High-Speed Hero, O’Clock, in Vigilantes, that a suitable counterpart to The Flash was finally introduced. Accompanying him is his remarkable ability, Overlock.
In a fascinating twist, Iwao Oguro’s extraordinary talent enables him to boost his brain activity and propel himself at breathtaking speeds, making everything else appear stationary. However, Overclock’s standout feature is its ability to enhance the user’s senses and speed up cell growth within the body. Due to these significant aspects, this power played a pivotal role in the tale of Vigilantes. In days gone by, All for One snatched it from Oguro and bestowed it upon the nefarious Number Six, who combined it with his other potent powers.
2. Hellflame
Enji Todoroki (Endeavor)
- First Appearance: Chapter 28 (My Hero Academia)
Fans of My Hero Academia are well aware that Endeavor is among the most potent and contentious figures in the entire series. Interestingly, he also features prominently in Vigilantes. As this spin-off is set a few years prior to the main narrative’s commencement, readers have the opportunity to witness a more ferocious and merciless depiction of Japan’s second-ranking Pro Hero.
Endeavor’s destructive ability, known as “Hellflame,” enables him to produce and manage intense fires. In the series “Vigilantes,” Endeavor demonstrated this skill exceptionally well, showcasing remarkable new Ultimate Moves such as Hellfire Storm and Hell Minefield. With his immense firepower at his disposal, he was able to overcome numerous powerful villains, reinforcing his well-deserved high rank and fearsome reputation.
1. One For All
Toshinori Yagi (All Might)
- First Appearance: Chapter 1 (My Hero Academia)
It’s indisputable that I find myself consistently marveling at the unparalleled strength exhibited by All Might within the realm of “My Hero Academia.” This prodigious power undeniably propelled him to the position of Japan’s top Pro Hero and the esteemed Symbol of Peace. Yet, as the narrative unfolds, we see him relinquishing his One For All quirk to Izuku Midoriya, leaving us spectators to enjoy only a handful of thrilling battles where he utilized its potency before completely exhausting it.
In a pleasant turn of events, the imbalance was partially addressed within “My Hero Academia: Vigilantes”. This narrative presents a slightly younger incarnation of All Might, several years prior to his encounter with Deku. Naturally, none of the other abilities in this spin-off can compare to All For One’s potency. Instead, All Might possesses extraordinary physical prowess that he frequently employs to overcome numerous adversaries single-handedly, making him the most powerful character within the story. Consequently, multiple story arcs center around his absence, forcing other heroes (and vigilantes) to confront villains without his assistance.
