As a devoted fan, I must say that wrapping up season two of “The Last of Us” has left me pondering numerous unanswered questions. In contrast to the first season, which I felt was a meticulous replication of the Naughty Dog games, this second installment took bold steps. It introduced fresh scenes and characters that didn’t exist previously and steered many familiar faces to offer diverse viewpoints.

In this discussion, we’ll delve deeper into the major transformations seen in ‘The Last of Us’ Max adaptation, particularly from episodes four to seven. The earlier episodes, numbered one to three, have already received extensive analysis.

6. Showing Isaac Early (Episode Four)

From FEDRA TO WLF

In the game “The Last of Us Part 2,” Isaac plays a significant role since he heads the WLF branch stationed in Seattle. He’s Abby’s superior officer, and you’ll encounter him in various scenes throughout the game. An interesting fact is that the actor portraying Isaac, both in the game and the show, is Jeffrey Wright.

In the game, he’s first encountered during Abby’s campaign, but in the show, particularly episode four, more focus is given to him. The beginning of this episode depicts Isaac when he was still with FEDRA, just before he turned against his own soldiers to strike a deal with a rebel alliance. Later on, we see him tormenting a member from the SCAR religious group, and these scenes are exclusive additions to Naughty Dog’s broader game universe.

5. How Dina Finds Out About Ellie’s Immunity (Episode Four)

Spores Are Less Of A Problem In The Show

Following their exit from the TV station, Dina and Ellie find themselves underground, a place where they continue to be chased by WLF agents. In this subterranean area, Ellie and Dina must navigate through the infected population. In an attempt to help Dina during their escape, Ellie intentionally gets bitten by an infected, a move that leaves Dina quite surprised.

In a theater, Ellie unveils that she’s immune, causing Dina to tense up with her weapon. The next day, Dina learns Ellie is truthful, experiencing a moment of relief before they share their first intimate moment. However, in the game, their first encounter happens at Eugene’s hideout. Unlike in the story, Dina doesn’t aim her gun at Ellie; instead, Ellie’s mask shatters as she inhales spores, leading her to confess the truth to Dina.

4. The Rendezvous With Jesse (Episode Five)

Caged In Clickers

In the game, Ellie and Dina can depart from Jackson as Tommy ventures out independently to track down Joel’s assassins. They travel together until they reach the theater, where Dina reveals the news about the baby to Abby. Unfortunately, Dina is too feeble to continue, forcing Ellie to investigate Seattle on her own.

During intense battles against various WLF groups, Jesse eventually locates Ellie. Together, they manage a daring escape from the area – a tense part of the game characterized by exchanging fire with WLF soldiers and infected. In episode five of the series, Dina chooses to journey alongside pregnant Ellie. As they traverse new territories, they stumble upon a lair filled with infected, narrowly cheating death. It’s at this point that Jesse appears, explaining he separated from Tommy.

3. New Backstory With Joel And Ellie (Episode Six)

A Trip To The Moon

In episode six, most of the content is fresh and presented via a sequence of flashbacks. Two scenes from the games are revisited, but they’ve been slightly modified. In one scene, Joel takes Ellie to a museum to view dinosaurs and space exhibits, although their visit is brief and they don’t venture into the second building or swim. The final flashback focuses on Ellie challenging Joel about the truth; in this version, he confesses openly, which differs from the game where this confrontation occurs when Ellie revisits the hospital in Seattle to uncover the truth about The Fireflies.

In a significant development, the character Eugene makes his live debut in “The Last of Us Part 2”, having previously been shown only in photos. The series had hinted at Eugene since the first episode, but this is where viewers get to witness how he contracted the infection. During a patrol, Ellie and Joel encounter Eugene with a scratch, who pleads to be taken back to the city gates to bid farewell to his wife. While Ellie goes to retrieve the horses, Joel promises to do so but ends up shooting Eugene instead, causing a major dispute between them. In contrast to the game where he passes away due to old age, here Eugene meets an untimely end.

2. Joel’s Father (Episode Six)

Maybe You’ll Do Better

Episode six offers another glimpse into Joel’s past, offering insights about him that aren’t directly explored in the games. Unlike the games, we don’t see Joel or Tommy as young boys, nor do we meet their father. However, in the TV series, there’s a short scene suggesting that Joel and Tommy were teenagers who got into trouble for drinking.

In this rephrased version: When their police officer father arrives home, Joel defends Tommy, leading his dad to share a tale about his own abusive father. He acknowledges his shortcomings as a parent, confessing to physical abuse and excessive harshness. Yet, he also tells Joel that he is superior to him, expressing hope that Joel will become an even better father to his child than he was. This mirrors the sentiment Joel conveys to Ellie during their conversation on the porch in the final episode of the series. It’s a reference to the concept of “the sins of the father,” which wasn’t directly addressed in the game but fits well with the show’s narrative.

1. The Finale (Episode Seven)

Giving Ellie A Big Abby Moment

Episode seven primarily adheres to the game’s lore with few deviations. However, there’s a notable difference when Ellie acquires a boat, attempting to reach the aquarium. In the original storyline, a massive wave overturns her vessel, forcing players to swim beneath the waves and eventually reach the docks. In the series, this wave pushes Ellie to a different shoreline instead. Here, she spots a youth dressed in attire that suggests he belongs to SCARs. As expected, more members of this group appear, intending to hang Ellie.

In this scene, there’s an echo of another one featuring Abby instead, where both nearly meet a gruesome end at the hands of the SCARs. The episode moves so swiftly that it feels almost surreal as Ellie hastily departs, returns to her mission at the aquarium, and subsequently eliminates Owen and Mel. The death of Mel carries a heavier emotional weight in the series because Ellie unintentionally strikes her, fully aware she is expecting. Regrettably, just like in the game, Ellie cannot prevent the baby’s demise.
