In “My Hero Academia,” there’s an unending flow of thrilling confrontations between heroes and villains, focusing on the ambitious students of U.A. High School as they strive to become professional heroes. Each student on this esteemed hero training course is putting in a lot of effort to be a hero and combat evil. As a result, it’s only normal that they forge strong friendships with their fellow classmates, often forming particularly close bonds among three or even two of them.
The pupils at U.A. form a tight-knit community, offering unwavering support to their friends in all circumstances. Some relationships run especially deep – be it between longtime classmates or those who share similar family connections that resonate deeply with each other. To put it simply, these are some of the strongest friendships depicted in MHA, showcasing a variety of bonds within and beyond Class 1-A, as the series delves into their complexities.
8. Shoto Todoroki & Tenya Iida
A Duo Who Can Relate To Each Other
Shoto Todoroki and Tenya Iida are recognized for their composure and effectiveness in challenging situations, making them two of the strongest and most dependable members of Class 1-A since day one. Academically, they excel, but initially, they didn’t have much interaction. However, this changed during the Hosu incident involving the Hero Killer Stain and the sad events that affected Iida’s brother Tensei. When Iida chose to pursue Stain, Shoto stood by his side. Seeing Iida’s distress, Shoto could somewhat relate due to his own painful past. Since they both have siblings, this shared experience further bonds them. Consequently, during a difficult period, Shoto was there for Iida, and along with Deku, they formed an unbeatable team, offering mutual support.
In the aftermath of the chaos in Hosu, I find myself spending more quality time with Deku and Iida, engaging in heartfelt conversations with them both. When it came to rescuing Bakugo, Iida stood firm, insisting on joining us not only for their safety but also to prevent any reckless actions. During the Final War, Iida and Shoto were assigned to face off against Dabi, Shoto’s fallen brother, aka Toya. In this battle, Iida proved to be an invaluable and powerful comrade to Shoto. This encounter serves as a reminder of the assistance and camaraderie Iida received from Shoto during his time of need in Hosu, allowing him the opportunity to repay the favor as his friend navigates through the emotionally charged events surrounding his brother this time. The strengthening bond between these two heroic brothers adds an additional layer of unity between Iida and Shoto.
7. Mina Ashido & Eijiro Kirishima
An Enthusiastic Pair Who Care About Each Other
Mina Ashido and Eijiro Kirishima are recognized as some of the most amiable, spirited, and sociable students in Class 1-A. Since they went to the same middle school, their bond is stronger than many others when they entered U.A. Kirishima, specifically, often doubts the worthiness of his own Quirk compared to those of his fellow hero trainees. Yet, he was encouraged by Mina’s self-assuredness in middle school, such as instances where she supported her classmates and even applied to U.A, which motivated him to start anew when entering a new school and even change his hairstyle dramatically. Mina playfully teases him and vows to keep his “makeover” confidential, revealing the strong level of trust and mutual respect between these two aspiring heroes.
Throughout the series, Mina and Kirishima often cross paths, starting with their mutual selection for Bakugo’s team during the Sports Festival. They both found themselves attending summer classes due to failing their Final Exams, and this camaraderie continued even into the two wars. When Kirishima becomes distraught over Bakugo’s kidnapping, Mina attempts to comfort him, expressing her worry for his safety. She also shares that her Acidman move was inspired by him, demonstrating her admiration for him much like he used to feel. With plenty of playful banter, it’s clear that these two have formed a strong friendship.
6. Mirio Togata, Tamaki Amajiki, And Nejire Hado
U.A.’s “Big Three” Are Unlike Any Other
The three standout students at U.A. are tight-knit friends, each possessing unique personalities: Mirio is renowned for his optimism, Nejire for her inquisitiveness, and Tamaki for his shyness. Yet, their interactions and mutual support show a profound connection. Mirio and Tamaki have known each other the longest, with Mirio becoming friends with Tamaki during childhood. Mirio’s infectious optimism helped pull Tamaki out of his shell, while Tamaki’s presence gave Mirio encouragement, admiring his resilience amidst anxiety. Conversely, Mirio also found inspiration in Tamaki’s company.
Previously, Nejire felt isolated before joining U.A., but soon formed a tight bond with this pair. This camaraderie was evident during their battle against Shigaraki in the Sky Coffin, as depicted in a fleeting flashback. When Bakugo got badly hurt and the Big Three decided to shield everyone until Deku arrived, Nejire reminisced about her encounter with Mirio and Tamaki. Their warmth and acceptance of her allowed her to embrace her true self for the first time, making her feel like she truly belonged due to them.
In numerous storylines, including the Shie Hassaikai arc and the Final War, The Big Three significantly impact events. Their bond is evident to fans through their interactions, mutual aid, and unwavering support that has consistently lifted one another up.
5. Tsuyu Asui & Ochaco Uraraka
These Gal Pals Have Always Been There For Each Other
Among the girls of Class 1-A, Tsuyu Asui and Ochaco Uraraka share a special closeness. While Tsu prefers to be addressed by her given name, she addresses Ochaco in the same way, a sign of their budding intimacy that was evident even in the initial season of the anime. Throughout the series, viewers often see them together, either standing side by side or sharing a table in the cafeteria. Their friendship deepens significantly during the chaotic incidents of season three, where they face Himiko Toga for the first time – a highly volatile and dangerous character.
In this narrative, Tsu consistently prioritizes her friend Ochaco’s safety, even risking her own wellbeing to shield Ochaco from the dangerous villain, Toga. This selfless act marks the beginning of their united fight against Toga throughout the series, demonstrating their strong teamwork, mutual trust, and deep friendship.
When Tsu objected to a rescue plan for Bakugo, she later felt remorseful for offending her friends. In a moment of vulnerability, she turned to Ochaco for comfort, which is evident in the scene where Ochaco consoles her conflicted friend.
Throughout the series, the duo work together at the same agency for their work studies, helping civilians during the Paranormal Liberation War, and teaming up once more against Toga during the Final War. This long-standing bond between them is further illustrated when Ochaco keeps Tsu’s feelings for Deku a secret, as seen in their battle against Toga, emphasizing the high level of trust and care they have for each other.
4. Katsuki Bakugo & Eijiro Kirishima [& Denki Kaminari]
Class A’s Most Hotheaded Students Build Each Other Up
Eijiro Kirishima is renowned for his lively and amiable demeanor. He was the one in Class A who initially formed a bond with the infamously fierce Katsuki Bakugo. Their first significant mission together took place following their separation during the USJ incident. Kirishima found great admiration in Bakugo’s Quirk, particularly his strength and quick decision-making that enabled him to defeat Kurogiri. As such, he chose to follow his lead. Despite Bakugo’s aggressive nature, Kirishima saw the hero within him, a trait many initially missed. Thus, they became each other’s first true friends. When Bakugo was abducted, Kirishima felt deeply concerned and subsequently devised a rescue plan, even if it technically went against the rules. He even spent his own money to acquire equipment for their mission. Izuku recognized the depth of their friendship during the operation to save Bakugo from Shigaraki, understanding that only Kirishima was required to reach out to him.
Over time, Bakugo develops a deep appreciation for Kirishima’s steadfast friendship. He demonstrates this in various ways such as returning the gear that Kirishima lost when they saved him, expressing concern verbally (like in the movie “Two Heroes”), and offering words of support when Kirishima doubts his own strength compared to others. Bakugo also values the friendship of Denki Kaminari, particularly since this comedic duo stick by Bakugo because they consider him a friend. In fact, as the series unfolds, Kaminari starts calling Bakugo “Kacchan”, and Bakugo allows it.
3. Izuku Midoriya, Ochaco Uraraka, And Tenya Iida
The Original “Big Three”
Upon joining U.A., Izuku swiftly formed friendships with Tenya Iida and Ochaco Uraraka. He found an instant connection with the outgoing Ochaco, and they supported each other throughout the Entrance Exam, with Ochaco even offering her earned points to Izuku. In contrast, things were initially rocky between Izuku and Iida, as he perceived Izuku as a bother. However, after witnessing Izuku’s heroic actions during the Entrance Exam, Iida apologized and soon became an integral part of Izuku’s group of friends. This friendship provided tremendous happiness to the once-bullied Izuku.
In their day-to-day lives, Izuku, Iida, and Ochaco prioritize each other’s wellbeing and share intimate secrets, such as the reason behind Ochaco’s desire to become a hero. At times, Iida’s zeal for shielding his friends may lead him to act aggressively. As the president of Class 1-A, Iida takes his responsibilities extremely seriously, which fuels his determination to safeguard his fellow students from harm. When a plan is hatched to rescue Bakugo and Izuku, who is still recuperating from a grueling battle, expresses his resolve to participate, Iida becomes agitated. Earlier, Izuku had assisted Iida in fighting Stain following the villain’s actions against his brother, and Iida is distressed at the thought of Izuku potentially endangering himself and disregarding rules, similar to their earlier encounter. Nevertheless, Iida suppresses his feelings for Izuku’s sake, understanding how deeply he regrets not being able to save Bakugo, demonstrating his concern for his friend’s emotions.
Iida and Ochaco are deeply moved by Izuku’s remarkable resolve, encouraging each other with the phrase “Go Beyond, Plus Ultra!” When it came to rescuing Izuku from U.A., Iida’s forceful speech touched Izuku profoundly, while Ochaco bravely defended him in front of everyone, revealing her deep affection for him. It’s worth noting that throughout most of the series, Izuku and Ochaco have hidden their feelings for each other, but Ochaco idolizes Izuku so much that she aspires to emulate him and feels envious whenever another girl shows interest in him.
2. Izuku Midoriya & Katsuki Bakugo
The Iconic Duo Eventually Grow To Be The Best Of Friends
In their youth, Izuku and Katsuki shared a close friendship, both idolizing All Might. But when Katsuki obtained his Quirk while Izuku did not, and the ensuing feelings of inferiority and instability led Katsuki to torment Izuku, giving him the degrading nickname “Deku.” Yet, despite this treatment, Deku continued to refer to Katsuki with a term of affection, “Kacchan.” As they entered U.A., tensions between them escalated, although their bond was recognized by Aizawa and the rest of Class 1-A who supported them. However, it wasn’t until after the Licensing Exam that things reached a boiling point for Izuku and Katsuki.
In this scenario, Katsuki confronts his long-time companion over their unique abilities, leading to a battle where Katsuki reveals his internal struggles. With All Might mediating, they both acknowledge each other as rivals, which eventually transforms into a strong bond, particularly on Katsuki’s side. He later feels remorse for how he treated Deku earlier and attempts to make amends by assisting him in mastering One For All. The two consistently motivate one another, and especially after discovering the truth about One For All, Katsuki becomes especially concerned for his friend. Their relationship grows even closer when Katsuki formally apologizes for his past transgressions. Even before his tragic demise while facing Shigaraki a second time, Katsuki continues to think of Izuku and the remarkable obstacles he surmounted.
The heartwarming dynamic between Izuku and Katsuki stands out in the series, becoming even more poignant as Katsuki follows Izuku’s lead. Years ago, Izuku selflessly aided Katsuki against a villain without a second thought, an action mirrored by Katsuki when he rescued Izuku from Shigaraki in the same selfless manner. Shigaraki acknowledges that Katsuki is the one closest to Izuku, making him a significant vulnerability for Izuku, as harming and eventually killing Katsuki struck a deep chord within Izuku. Despite their contrasting natures, the bond between Izuku and Katsuki runs deep and proves unshakable, a theme further developed in the film “Heroes Rising,” where Katsuki briefly took possession of One For All.
1. Izuku Midoriya, Katsuki Bakugo, And Shoto Todoroki
U.A.’s Next “Big Three” Always Have Each Other’s Backs
In their unique paths, Deku and Katsuki form a strong friendship with Shoto Todoroki. At first, Shoto viewed Deku as an obstacle in his personal mission to reject his father, Endeavor. However, Deku played a crucial role in encouraging Shoto to accept his fire powers, despite the pain it caused him and his participation in the Sports Festival. This act won Shoto’s trust, leading them to become close friends quickly. Deku further assisted Shoto in reconnecting with his father, expressing his caring nature and readiness to move on, a gesture that left Shoto deeply moved. What surprised Shoto even more was when Deku didn’t reveal the secret of One For All, demonstrating their deep friendship.
In a similar fashion, Katsuki encountered a comparable situation, though it was primarily Shoto who endured Katsuki’s harsh words. Just as his relationship with Izuku, Katsuki’s internal struggles with feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt, amplified by comparisons to Shoto, hindered the formation of friendship with the “icy-hot” hero initially. However, after they both failed the Provisional License Exam and were required to attend a remedial course, they spent considerable time working together, leading to changes in their relationship. By the end of the course, Shoto even declared them friends, despite Katsuki’s outbursts. In the “World Heroes’ Mission,” it is evident that Katsuki now appreciates working with Shoto and responds positively to his friendship, a sentiment also displayed when Katsuki takes the lead in trying to retrieve Izuku from U.A. during season six of the anime.
The way Shoto feels about his classmates is evident in his decision to invite them both to Endeavor’s agency for internships, and at the Todoroki dinner party, he publicly acknowledges them as friends. Izuku and Katsuki are the only ones who know about Shoto’s family troubles, and they have been standing by him ever since. From that point onwards, these three students – Izuku, Katsuki, and Shoto – are often shown together, not just as Class 1-A’s top students but as a tight-knit group of friends. This trio has earned the reputation as U.A.’s potential “Big Three,” a status that the series has carefully developed over time.
